I do a devotional every now and then, I've recently came across a verse that says to hate what is evil? (Romans 12:9) I'm a bit confused because I'm under the impression we are not to harbor hate in our hearts.

Hate what is evil, cling to what is good. We can hate sin.

Not quite sure there is a biblical verse actually stating this, but I get the concept

I thought it was love your enemy into submission. God is pure love. Hate opens your heart to satan. I find it easier to look at it that way. Just a personal preference.

Romans 12:9- "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil, cling to what is good."

The verse is contrasting good with evil and telling the reader not to pretend about it. The Word hate is a strong one but does not imply a harboring mindset. We must also be careful of not making a person the object of this rejection, but instead to reject such a mindset or action or propogation of evil things.

Revelation uses the word hate again, speaking of the Nicolaitans, whose PRACTICES or deeds I hate. It is a good question and good word study.

The word dissimulation implies that the wool is being pulled over someone's eyes, or they're being fooled or tricked by someone's deceit. The origin of dissimulation is the Latin dissimulationem, which means "a disguising or concealment. See vocabulary.com

God's Word isn't peace at all costs. Love must always be informed by God's truth. And it's truthful to hate evil with all your heart.

Are you serious? The verse you mentioned in your original post mentions that we're to hate sin and cling to what is good.

Isaiah 5: 20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

25 Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

well think of it this way, I live in a very un Christ like environment where I am constantly surrounded by cussing and disgusting sexual and perverted remarks and jokes 24/7 I absolutely hate hearing all this but i don't hate the people who say it. I also hate rap music with a passion just as I hate green beans I hate it when ppl judge others by appearance but I would die for any one of them.

God hates evil he hates sin but he doesn't hate us he literally hates the sin but loves the sinner.

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

I agree if you mean evil being a non-tangible thing (can't be touched or reasoned with). I can say I hate murder but not the murderer. It's not for me to judge. I think we are in agreement and saying the same thing. But I was thinking earlier about Jesus at the temples when he became angry at the merchants. I think Jesus HATED the act and he was frustrated that the merchants just weren't understanding what he had told them. His rage got their attention but in the end, I don't think he hated the merchants.

Exactly, right. Also, evil isn't a thing in and of itself. Evil is an absence or corruption of God's goodness.

We aren't to harbor hate towards one another, but hating sin and evil is Christian.

  • Psalm 5:5, "The boastful shall not stand before Thine eyes; Thou dost hate all who do iniquity,"
  • Psalm 11:5, "The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked, and the one who loves violence His soul hates."
  • Lev. 20:23, "Moreover, you shall not follow the customs of the nation which I shall drive out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I have abhorred them."
  • Prov. 6:16-19, "There are six things which the Lord hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: [SUP]17[/SUP] Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, [SUP]18[/SUP] A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, [SUP]19 [/SUP]A false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers."
  • Hosea 9:15, "All their evil is at Gilgal; indeed, I came to hate them there! Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of My house! I will love them no more; All their princes are rebels."

I hate any evil thoughts or actions in MY OWN heart. That's why I need to focus on Jesus alone.

Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Job 2:3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

Good old Job.

When people sin, they hurt other people. We need to hate that. You don't want people sinning against you, do you?
