There are a whole lot of phrases that are common to many christians that just get reeled off without a lot of thought about where they stand biblically:

Here are some-(not word for word from scripture)

'Where two or three are gathered, there I am with them!' - Jesus talking

Often said at a youth rally or conference.. sometimes said when a few christians are gathered randomly. Everyone is SUPPOSED to yelling 'amens', and fully supporting this.. but what is the context of this phrase in Matthew 18?

'I stand at the door and knock. If anyone answers and opens the door I will sup with him and he with me' - Jesus talking.. from Revelation 3:20

Often used to talk about receiving Jesus as your saviour. But what is the context?

'I will spew thee out of my mouth, for thou art lukewarm'.. people use this phrase to support the Holy Spirit being removed from a person individually.. effectively losing eternal salvation.. this is in Revelation.. but again.. what is the context?

It goes on and on.. many phrases just said.. without much thought

Key things:

Matthew 18 is about the right way of resolving sin issues in a local church family (altho using 'local' is misnomer.. 'church' is always local). The context is about 2 or 3 gathered together to sort out a sinning brother's issues in the church.

Revelation 3-- this isn't addressed to an individual.. but again is talking about a local church. Remember.. 'hear what the Spirit saith to the CHURCHES'

'I will spew thee out of my mouth'... context of this is about the characteristics of a luke-warm local church (Laodicea). Same thing as above... it's not about individuals alone. It's a whole church families issue.

There is a big big difference between the Holy Spirit being 'in the midst' of a church family.... and an individual having being 'indwelled' by the Holy Spirit.

They are not the same thing.
