It is written in Isaiah 40:4 “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:” This parable was also spoken of again in Luke 3:5 But many do not fully perceive how this metaphor was spiritually speaking concerning humility and pride.

The Lord often compares the proud in spirit and those who exalt themselves as being like those who lift themselves up on high, like lofty trees or mountains raised up on high. Let’s see if we can see the connection here to the mountains being made low in the haughty of spirit being made low by scripture.

Here's the Bible meaning of Haughty....to rise, rise up, be high, be lofty, be exalted, to be high, be set on high, to be raised, be uplifted, be exalted, to be lifted, rise

Mountains are high, just as the spirit of the haughty sets itself up on high, or exalts itself.
Let's look at some verses on the haughty... Proverbs 18:12 “Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.”

Proverbs 16:18Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

Psalm 131:1 “Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.”

Isaiah 10:33 “Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.”

Now notice the wording here in connection with the words found in Isaiah 40 below Isaiah 24:4 “The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.

Now to Isaiah 40:6-8 “The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:[SUP]7 [/SUP]The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.[SUP]8 [/SUP]The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."

Now compare to the testimony of James... James 1:9-11 "Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:[SUP]10 [/SUP]But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.[SUP]11 [/SUP]For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways."

So the parable of the mountains and valleys spoken of in Isaiah and repeated again in Luke chapter 3 is not talking about literal mountains and hills, nor literal valleys, but rather people.

The truth of the message is confirmed here….

Matthew 23:12 “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Luke 14:11 “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Luke 18:14 “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

More scriptures…..

Proverbs 29:23 “A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.”
Obadiah 1:3 “The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?”

Every mountain shall be made low....

Job 40:12 "Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place."

Psalm 101:5 "Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.
Proverbs 21:4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

Isaiah 2:12
“For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:”

Isaiah 13:11 “And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.”

Luke 10:15
And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.

Ya being made low.... the Godly response is humbleness and repentance, Godly sorrow. The proud would resist and beat their chest. What's the Greek word for 'I' .... EGO

I like this a lot. I can see you put a lot of thought and research into this post.

Reading all these verses makes me reflect on pride and self deception. It's sobering to ponder how quickly and easily we can be brought low or humbled by God. It's amazing to think about how strongly human nature resists humility. We can't escape this though. Either we will humble ourselves or God will. I think pride and arrogance are sins that displease God more than any others. Just reading through all the verses you shared, I see the theme of God judging and destroying those who are haughty. In many verses, the judgment seems to have a finality to it.

Right on,Right on.

That is what keeps us from God is arrogance, for when we are not in the truth,we are exalting our self in one way or another, and loving people is the fulfilling of the law,but you cannot love people perfectly with arrogance.

Love is the greatest thing we can possess, but not in the truth we cannot love people perfectly because of our arrogance, that is selfish, self exalting,me attitude, bragging, and pushing our own agenda instead of God's agenda.

Mat 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
Mat 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

Luk 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

1Pe 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach.
1Ti 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

Mat 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Gal 6:3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Php 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Not only do we humble ourselves, and not be arrogant,to be right with God,but we esteem others higher than ourselves.

If a person is arrogant, and exalts themselves, then God is resisting them.Every time we call people names,or converse with them in a manner not of Christ, but of arrogance,God resists.Every time we ignore scriptures that plainly state something, and we say otherwise for whatever reason,it is arrogance, and God resists.Every time we sin, which it is of the flesh,we are arrogant, for we are pushing our agenda,God resists.

It would appear that "humbling" ourselves under God is vital. Both James and Peter says to humble and to submit yourselves onto God as He gives grace to the humble.

Humble means to be totally reliant on what Christ has done and to not live our own life by our own self-effort and works. Submit means to come under the truth of what Christ has done for us in His perfect work on our behalf and to believe in the good news of the grace of Christ for life and living.

His grace then empowers us to walk out what is already in us in Christ in the new creation - to manifest His life in and through us to a hurt and dying world that needs to see the love and grace of Jesus and our Father and to "see" and "know" them for who they truly are.

We have a great salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ and a good, good, loving Father.

I completely agree. This is why we have loss of salvation around, sinning less for salvation, no willful sin after salvation and many other false doctrine garbage in the Church. The PROUD and ARROGANT have the soap box in the majority of congregations.

Good post.

Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
Isa 57:16 For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.

humility is one of Jesus' greatest gifts to us, and if we don't embrace it with our whole hearts,
then we are only great pretenders...

Amen, it is better we fall on the Rock of God and our pride be broken and we be humbled, rather than the Rock falling down on us, and thus end up being destroyed.

Matthew 21:44

And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
