Our goal in Christ is to be like Him.
This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.
1 John 4:17
We are called to do things that do not come naturally to this world, because this world
is driven by passion and self benefit.
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Gal 5:24
It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.
Titus 2:12
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.
Titus 3:3
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Gal 5:22-26
Now some seem to find it hard to see Jesus is saying something simple.
The ways of the world, sin, leads to death and judgement.
The ways of God lead to life and eternity.
So we walk into forgiveness and cleansing, so we can see aright and walk
aright in righteousness, purity and holiness, cleansed by the God and filled
with the Holy Spirit.
Now which part is salvation and which part sanctification? To me these
are labels, but if one realises by not doing being sanctified you miss Christ, one
is saying salvation is dependent upon sanctification happening.
Now as the goal is to be like Christ, and to walk the path that gets you there
abandoning the path is giving up on the goal and on Christ and going back to
the world.
But this appears too hard for many, because they want certainty in a relationship
which for them is so full of guilt they find it impossible to feel secure in Christ.
Unless God says they are safe no matter what they do, they go into a worry spiral
of how can we guarantee faithfulness to us and avoid hurt. But this is letting worry
dominate above love and faith, and is simple unbelief.
Christ died on the cross. The Lord on High became a man, and submitted to sinful
corrupt evil men, and let them kill Him. If that is not enough for a believer, they have
not yet met God, have not yet let love into their hearts.
