Receiving the Holy Ghost Vs. being filled with the Holy Ghost

John 20:22King James Version (KJV)

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

this is speaking of a separate moment were they received the spirit of God.

now acts 2

Acts 2King James Version (KJV)

2 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

it is the difference between two words...
receive and filled

Strong's Concordance
lambanó: to take, receive
Original Word: λαμβάνω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: lambanó
Phonetic Spelling: (lam-ban'-o)
Short Definition: I receive, take
Definition: (a) I receive, get, (b) I take, lay hold of.HELPS Word-studies
2983 lambánō (from the primitive root, lab-, meaning "actively lay hold of to take or receive," see NAS dictionary) – properly, to lay hold by aggressively (actively) accepting what is available (offered). 2983 /lambánō ("accept with initiative") emphasizes the volition (assertiveness) of the receiver.

Strong's Concordance
: furnish, accomplish, fill, supply
Original Word: πλήθω
Part of Speech: Verb
Phonetic Spelling: (play'-tho)
Short Definition: I fill
Definition: I fill, fulfill, complete.

HELPS Word-studies
4130 plḗthō (or pimplēmi) – properly, fill to the maximum (full extent), "the limit" (CBL). 4130/plḗthō ("full") implies "filled to one's (individual) capacity."
[This root (plē-) expresses totality, and implies full quantity ("up to the max"). DNTT (1,733) notes its cognates (plērēs, plēroō, plērōma) all come from the root (plē-/plēthō) meaning "full in quantity." Thus 4130 /plḗthō ("to fill or complete") refers to "that which is complete in itself because of plentitude, entire number or quantity. . . . the whole aggregate," WS, 395,96).
4130 (plēthō) may be a by-form derived from the same root as pimplēmi. All these terms (cognates) emphasize the idea of "maximum (full extent)."]

there is only one thing that matter when i comes to "recieving the Holy spirit"

23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

the only thing that matters, is you Believe who Jesus said He was, if you wish to be filled with the Spirit, ask and He will. but you already have Him.

Strong's Concordance
pisteuó: to believe, entrust
Original Word: πιστεύω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: pisteuó
Phonetic Spelling: (pist-yoo'-o)
Short Definition: I believe, have faith in
Definition: I believe, have faith in, trust in; pass: I am entrusted with.

HELPS Word-studies
4100 pisteúō (from 4102 /pístis, "faith," derived from 3982 /peíthō, "persuade, be persuaded") – believe (affirm, have confidence); used of persuading oneself (= human believing) and with the sacred significance of being persuaded by the Lord (= faith-believing). Only the context indicates whether 4100 /pisteúō ("believe") is self-serving (without sacred meaning), or the believing that leads to/proceeds from God's inbirthing of faith.

Very insightful. I noticed that there seemed to be a difference in my time of faith, I received the holy spirit when I was saved it was amazing the power and love of God surged through my entire being I was consumed by a holy fire but being filled with him for me does not seem to be same as receiving him.

When I am filled with him it's something that happens on a day to day bases not a one time deal, when I feeling weak and worn out a sense of peace like rushing water washes over me when I am in communion with God a blazing fire seems to fill my soul giving me strength and courage faith and trust or other times I am filled with this love that is not natural that suddenly out of nowhere happens other times I am simply filled with life itself.

I think being filled with him is something that arises from the fruits of spending deep communion with him as much as possible and it's never without purpose

Unless a Believer understands the meaning of the New Covenant which is the meaning of the Cross in the fourteen epistles what Paul taught, you can't live for God successfully. You can be saved, you can be spirit filled, you can even be used of the LORD, but you personally can't live a victorious life. This is why Paul said, "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I understand not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I (Romans 7:14-15).

This refers to the obedience he wants to render to Christ, but rather fails; why? as Paul explained, the Believer is married to Christ, but is being unfaithful to Christ by spiritually cohabiting with the Law, which frustrates the Grace of God; that means the Holy Spirit will not help such a person, which guarantees failure (Gal. 2:21). Paul refers to sin in his life which he doesn't want to do, and in fact hates, but finds himself unable to stop; unfortunately, due to the fact of not understanding the Cross as it refers to Sanctification, this is the plight of most modern Christians.

We must learn what Jesus is, who He is, how He is, where He is, what He is, and why He is. When is Light is rejected and Light ignored, not only do we lose what He wants to give us, but we lose also what little we do have.

I would to speak to you about this part here You can be saved, you can be spirit filled, you can even be used of the LORD, but you personally can't live a victorious life. Would you explain what living a victorious life is to you? Because for me just knowing God just having a deep love with him just spending time with him and being used by him in all things no matter how small is living a victorious life.

Indeed this is because his word is alive it is the very heart of God himself in your own hands it is the original tale of love hate pain healing good and evil. His words are etched into out hearts and souls like a weaver who weaves a grand and beautiful design. His word has power flowing through it more than a nuke more than the sun exploding it's not simply a feeling it's a connection a bond a weaving and intertwining of his heart and ours

amen brothers, but first you gotta know the meaning of covenant.

Genesis 15:8-18King James Version (KJV)

8 And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
18 In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

[h=1]1 Samuel 18:1-4King James Version (KJV)[/h]18 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

A victorious life is entering into His rest; The Finished Work. That is why we must know and learn what Jesus is, who He is, how He is, where He is, what He is, and why He is; and what was accomplished on the Cross of Calvary; and how does the Holy Spirit work?

I would add that after the cross where the believer has died with Christ and our old man was crucified with Him - we need to go on to the revelation that we have risen with Christ and are now seated with Him at the right hand of the Father. The cross is needed in order to even start the resurrection to new life process.

To me "taking up our cross daily" is acknowledging that we have died on the cross with Christ and that after we have died - we rose to newness of life and now we are "alive unto God". Our life is hidden with Christ in God. Col. 3:3

Amen. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Power over sin - power over the world, power over the flesh, and power over the Devil.
