If I confessed every sin in my life, I would only be focusing on myself all the time. I would be speaking to God about the way in which I didn't exactly act in love towards someone, or I was selfish or I found myself trying to control things. And how about every time I have worry (which is not of faith), and did not have all the attributes of the love chapter - like patience, and I kept a record of wrongs done to me, or I did not ....... I would have no time for any words about Jesus to others. I would hardly have time to praise. (Let alone, do the dishes).

But it is mostly in how you approach God. Approach him with great humility, knowing that you are a sinful creature as long as we are in the flesh. And also knowing that he shed his blood to cover your sins for all time. This is enough to cause you to weep with gratitude, and respond with praise.

Is John focusing on confessing every single sin that we commit as we commit them as an additional requirement to remain cleansed? Or does John have in mind here a settled recognition and ongoing acknowledgment that one is a sinner in need of cleansing and forgiveness?

Notice that verse 8 says, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." Verse 10 says, "If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us." IN CONTRAST TO - if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Are you trying to imply that everytime a believer commits a sin they are not cleansed from all unrighteousness until they confess that specific sin? Are believers lost all over again until they confess each specific sin? What happens if they forget one?
Read post #8 and post #1 again. I never said you must confess every sin.

With this outlook, unless your memory is 100% perfect, and you have not forgotten even one transgression down through the years, "that the Lord at the same time, cannot forgive such a sin, which leaves the Believer in a precarious situation." (The "quoted" part, you posted, not me.)

though i agree with confession wholeheartedly, Dan raised an interesting point in that there will be sins of commission or omission we may not remember to confess. so what about those? perhaps this is why David prayed like this---

Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. (Ps 19:12)

just wanted to ask what the above verses, from the OP, have to do with the whole subject of Christian confession?
i must be a little slow this morning, because in the second Christ is speaking to those who rejected Him, and in the first John seems to be also speaking of those outside of Christ.... ???

can someone help me?

Those who choose not to confess & ask for forgiveness for their sins will be judged.

Aristotle's Challenge:

Anyone can become angry — that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way — this is not easy.

It can just as accurately be said this way:

Anyone can be dogmatic — that is easy. But to be dogmatic with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way — this is not easy.

Hmmm I am thinking that if God lives in my soul/heart/spirit (or whatever one chooses to call it), then it would be logical to think that this same God who resides in my soul, would also hear my soul regardless if any words are spoken out loud.....and if this is not logical, then how does a mute person confess his sins? (I am only being snarky there, I don't really want to know)

Simple. What you dont cofess, cant be forgiven and youll go to hell as sin cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Hi Demi, that means in the case, that you die in an accident and has forgotten to ask for forgiveness for a single sin, then you will come into hell. Then your whole life you must live in fear not to have confessed all sins, big ore very small.
I mean not said we should not confess our sins. But our salvation is undepend from our sins, because they are payed already. Otherwise it would be not grace. Praise the Lord!

The Holy Spirit speaks always.. we were not left as orphans..

Keep on not confessing and I'll keep confessing and we'll see where we all end up... I assure you, that salvation comes to those who humble themselves not to those who don't.. its satan like... Dogmatic me if you must... truth is thruth

They are either deceived or lack knowledge, in which case they should ask God for wisdom who gives it generously.

Why would a Christian not agree with God about everything? Especially sin?

As Christians we confess our sins that "The Holy Spirit" reveals to you, And He will be faithful to cleanse us from all other sins that you do not know about.

God is telling us that He only operates in the light. You must confess your sins that He reveals to you (This Activates The Cross To Deal With Sin). (Bonus) And He will be faithful to cleanse us from all other sins that you do not know about (The Blood Of Jesus Cleanse Us, Heals Us, Deliver Us, And So Much More!).

If we confess our sins we will be forgiven but does that mean we ask for forgiveness for every little screw up? I think it isn't about confessing every sin it's about a repentant heart.

Believe me I would be the biggest liar if I said I don't sin all the time I try not to but I am weak in certain matters I used to beat myself up all the time about it used to confess every sin every screw up and felt horrible feeling as if I just won't ever measure up. God knew my heart he knew that I felt bad for all I did wrong and he tried to get me to be still and rest in his grace instead of putting myself in chains like that but sadly I always have to learn things the hard way and I nearly broke.

I didn't understand grace and I didn't understand about a repentant heart, but when I was about to break I fell in his arms and he showed me rest freedom no chains I saw blood spill over me and I finally understood that Jesus had already made me free and as long as I had a repentant heart I was clean.

Of course i still apologize to God for my sins but I don't ask for forgiveness for every little screw up

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Falling to confess your sin to God means that the Lord at the same time, cannot forgive such a sin, which leaves the Believer in a precarious situation. Forgiveness by God, in the context of which the Holy Spirit here speaks, is not automatic.

John plainly says that such a person "walks in darkness" (1 John 2:11). Jesus said: "Therefore your sins remaineth" (John 9:41).

In fact, the very moment that we do something wrong, the Holy Spirit without fail, will convict us (John 16:8). At that moment we should confess our sin to the Lord, whatever it might be, and wherever we might be. This is a matter of the heart, so it does not need ceremony of any kind.

Pastor Jimmy Swaggart Bible Commentary
Is John focusing on confessing every single sin that we commit as we commit them as an additional requirement to remain cleansed? Or does John have in mind here a settled recognition and ongoing acknowledgment that one is a sinner in need of cleansing and forgiveness?
