This term.. I thought.. generally meant...

* Belief in the bible as the Word of God
* Willingness to share the gospel
* Belief in the fundamentals of the Faith.. Jesus is God.. salvation by grace thru faith in Jesus.. 2nd coming of Christ.. belief in the Trinity

There may be a little more..

But seems to me, there are many who see 'evangelical' as something different.

I know when i was a teen.. this was like a bad word.. now I know what it actually means.. I am a fan.. indeed.. I am an evangelical!

So what do you goes understand this means?

An evangelist is one who spreads the word of God to others... To evangelize is to seek converts to Christianity..

I use the term "evangelical" to describe my political beliefs. To me it just means that I believe in the commandments of the Lord.

I think you are basically right in the three points that you give - this is what an evangelical is and how I perceive the use of the term "evangelical'.

What is interesting to me is that what you list is either beliefs or actions (that is - doing evangelism). Hence the term "evangelical" simply identifies a group by what they believe or by what they do.

The term "evangelical" does not identify if a person is saved or born again. It is term identifying a field of belief. Thus there are evangelicals who are not born again. There are probably also those who are born again who are not "evangelical".

I am an evangelical who has been born again.

So people who refer to evangelicals as something they aren't...

Do those people mean they do not share their faith?

I am 100% evangelical.
It comes in contract to various other groups who do not believe in evangelism,
sharing the faith to lead people for Christ.

Often people will now add Charismatic, to show their view on the gifts.
Most of the protestant church is evangelical in one form or another.

Some of the more wakey charismatic groups would condemn evangelicals
as brainwashed legalists, but then they are starting a new type of faith.

An evangelical is one who evangelizes (teaches the life saving gospel to others). Not every Christian is evangelical, because they themselves do not spread the gospel message. Only active Christians are evangelicals.

[for me anyway] the Word of God explains itself, and for this we see:

"But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry." (2 Timothy 4:5)

[again for me anyway] the verse tells us exactly what an evangelist is, and we need not to guess at it.

Or they may mean that these people do not really believe in the core fundamentals of the Christian faith

Yes, this is what I have picked up on.. is where you get evangelical as a term to refer to more in charismatic terms.

I'm not charismatic.. but am evangelical. This is very different from what I used to think about what evangelical meant. I think many do associate evangelical with charismatic terms.
