The Purpose of the Book of Revelation

Revelation 1:1-3 KJV
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

[2] Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

[3] Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave unto him - A revelation of God to his son Jesus Christ.
To shew His servants (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul etc.) things that must shortly come to pass.
And He sent (the revelation given to Jesus) and signified by it his angel(His messengers rendered the revelation into signs - symbolic language) unto his servant John.

John bare record of the word of God (the existing scripture at that time) and of the testimony of Jesus Christ (the writings of the New Testament which Christ gave to his servants) and of all things John saw. (all the things John saw on the Lord's day - the Book of Revelation)

To summarize: John was given the cannon of scriptures on the isle of Pamos on the Lord's day. Not saying this is all right, but I'm opening it up for discussion.

and i read it that John bore record to "whatever things he saw" - those things being the word of God ((which God's messenger communicated to Him)) and the testimony of Jesus Christ ((which the Lord Himself imparted to him))

. . . not that this is an oblique reference to "canon," just that it is the introductory statement that what follows is the testimony of the revelation given to John, of the word of God, the testimony of Jesus Christ, that came to him.

The only difference between rhema and logos is one is the spirit of Christ in "bodily" form and the other is the spirit of Christ in word form... so essentially there is no difference between the word of God and the Word of God if the Spirit of Christ is in the written word.

The encounter with Jesus and the revelation itself are two separate things.

Paul goes to the throne and speaks with Jesus, and then after that the Angel shows him the future, i.e. the Revelation God gave Jesus.

It seems sometimes that the real purpose behind the book of Revelation is to see how we react towards those that have a different view of some subjects then others do. Do we attack them and insult them and call them names because of it? Do we demean them?

Perhaps one of the reasons for the book of Revelation is to reveal our true spiritual age as can be seen in 1 Peter 2:1-2. Let's have respect for others that have a different view on some things and maybe then we can all learn together.

Paul says none of us know things as we ought to know them.

In saying that : If you don't agree with everything I believe about the book of Revelation - then the earth will open up and swallow you for your "lack of faith"...

I don't believe that is restricted changing the print, but adding to or taking away via word of mouth, teaching, proclaiming.

I agree.....now the question remains that we still need to rely totally on the Holy Spirit to reveal the things of God to us as it is easy to have our own interpretation of things and thus we can think others are "adding unto" the words being spoken.

This made me take a quick look at the word for "add" and it means to "lay or put upon". The word is used for the "laying on of hands". Also it was used in talking about Jesus when they "laid upon" Him the crown of thorns.

There seems to be more to this "add unto" then meets the causal eye.

Amen "signified", the gospel key that unlocks the mysteries of God.... as in ; "without parables Christ spoke not to the multitude.(everyone)"

Signified comes from the Greek word semaino from where we get the word semantics. Signs are shadows pointing to the eternal, not seen. as that hid in the parables.

Yes without parables that hide the spiritual meaning from the lost Christ, spoke not.

Off the top of my head, the book of Revelation has taught me at least two things.

First there is the lake of fire. When we sin, that is where we find ourselves.

Second, we are taught that 666 is the number of the beast. This has been helpful to me.
