The two houses of Israel.

The two houses (families) established of God in the earth represented in the scriptures.

A family or linage is distinguished by its originator and the expression “House Of” is the distinction and recognition of that linage from its beginning throughout their generations.

God speaking through the prophet Jeremiah gave presence to the existence of two families [two houses] that He recognizes in the earth.

Who these two families [houses] represent is highly important in the reasoning and scope of scripture, for by recognition of who God is referring when he speaks judgment and prophecy concerning them is necessary in properly distinguishing His purpose and its fulfillment.

So who are these two houses [families] and how are they recognized?

In the book of Genesis chapter 3, we find the first recognition of the families.

The seed of the woman.

This is the first mention of the family or house that would come forth and be recognized throughout scripture.

In Genesis 4, Adam knew his wife and she conceived which began the linage or the house of Adam.

This house would continue upon the earth until the fulfillment of the prophecy which God spoke to the serpent in Genesis 3.

From the conception recorded in Genesis 4 unto this present time, the woman’s seed [“It”] continues through today and shall remain until the fulfilling of the prophecy in Gen 3 “It shall bruise thy head”, which is the day of vengeance as recorded in the book of Isaiah 61:2.

This linage, this house of Adam is the beginning of the family of Israel, for through the loins of Adam was this seed cast from which came forth Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob whom God surnamed Israel [Gen 32:28].

Now this seed, this house of Adam is of an earthly decent, for he was cast out from the presence of the [Spirit] of God to endure the hardship of his iniquity which is death.

This is the first family of God that He established upon the earth.

Cast in righteousness, but fell in iniquity [Gen 3:8], God having mercy and bringing forth grace [Gen 3:16-21] prophesying their continuance and hope through the promised seed [Gen 3:15].

Now the house in itself is no longer righteous before the LORD [Rom 3:10], but the seed of promise which is to come through the house is righteous and holy unto the LORD making the generations of Adam leading up to that seed righteous in the work [Gen 7:1, Psa 14:5, Gal 5:9].

The first family [house] of God whom He established in the earth [for He took them from the earth - Gen 3:19], became mortal receiving the reward of their iniquity, abiding under the bondage of their weakness without the Spirit of God.

Now, at a time reckoned, God called forth another out of the first by which to establish His covenant.

This covenant would be of an earthly origin, but with an eternal hope of redemption.

The house of Adam cannot represent the righteousness of God, for they are carnal and weak against iniquity, therefore, the need of another by which to secure the promise of redemption.

Residing in the land of UR was one named Abram.

He was of the linage of Adam, the righteous seed of prophecy.

God speaking to Abram called him out of the land of his nativity and sent him into a foreign land where he would be a stranger.

Abram [as with Adam], had to stand alone with only the word of the LORD by which to abide, God promising to establish him and his decedents in the new land forever.

After forgoing many trails and much tribulation in the new land, Abram holding to the words of God would not relinquish from the promises made, and endured the afflictions with hope.

God seeing the faith of Abram through his belief in His words from which he would not turn, placed upon him the seal of righteousness [Gen 15:6] calling those things that were not as though they were. [Thou art a father of many nations, Gen 17:4, Rom 4:16]

God established His covenant with Abraham in righteousness, securing His eternal promise of redemption which had been lost by the iniquity of Adam, yet, the fulfilling was still future, for the atonement was not yet given, and the two [houses] would abide as one.

These are the two families [houses] established upon the earth by the LORD, but the distinction between the two is not apparent until the prophecy of Jacob concerning his sons [the 12 patriarchs of Israel], for the seed was called through Isaac [free born], but placed under bondage through the vow/oath of Jacob as prophesied by the LORD [Gen 15:13].

In Gen 28, verses 13 through 22, The LORD presented Himself unto Jacob as He did Abraham and Isaac, declaring the continuance of the promise secured by the faith of Abraham unto him and his generations, but in verse 20, Jacob revealed his lack of belief and placed a condition upon the promise.
[If God will be with me] signifying his hesitation to place unconditional faith in the word of God as did his father’s Abraham and Isaac, thereby placing his own conditions in determining the acceptance.

This vow made by Jacob nullified the promise as one received under faith [free], and placed it as one under works [bondage], for unless God fulfilled Jacobs desire, he would not honor Him as did his father Abraham and Isaac, therefore, it was necessary for Jacob to see before he would believe.

This act [vow] placed Jacob whom God surnamed Israel [given to him before the vow] under the conditions of an oath which holds the person in bondage to the oath until it is fulfilled; thereby Jacob received of God by the oath and not the promise placing the emphasis upon the acts of the man and not the word of God.

The covenant of redemption unto Abraham was still in effect [for it is an eternal covenant], but Israel was born into bondage through the oath of Jacob and abided under works [law], for the oath [which is bondage] set aside the promise [which was free].

God signified this through the prophecy of Jacob unto his sons the twelve patriarchs of Israel, for each son [house] would experience [bondage] aside from Judah whom God justified and called to be the head. [The righteous seed Gen 49: 9-12]
The covenant of Abraham continues through Judah [the righteous seed, elect, Rom 9:7, 11:17], but the house of Jacob resides in blindness of the promise until the time fulfilled.

These are the two houses of Israel or families of God as revealed throughout scripture.

The spiritual house of Abraham who are redeemed [the election] and the carnal house of Jacob who are blind [in bondage].

By these are the scriptures defined and the prophecies given.

The house of Abraham, the house of Jacob [Isa 29:22].

It is imperative that the student of God’s word discern and separate the two houses in scripture for the sole purpose as to whom the Holy Father is addressing, what is His purpose concerning them, when will this apply, and what will be the end of it.
Abraham – under the spiritual oath freely given through faith.

Jacob – under the carnal oath obtained in bondage of disbelief.

All who are in Christ, who have received the eternal covenant awarded unto father Abraham through faith, are the Election of God.

All other are still in the bondage of disbelief awaiting the fulfillment of all things as it is written.

God Bless

Hmmm... I would note the following clarification which Scripture itself provides:

Galatians 3:6 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

It seems to me that you may have conflated the ideas of "seed" and "house". In modern English, the word "seed" can be singular or collective-plural ("I picked up an apple seed" vs "My friend purchased seed for his grain farm") I'd have to ask the Hebrew specialists whether the same is true there.

Otherwise it's an interesting study. :)

Thanks for the comments, and I knew this reasoning would come up.

The seed (house/family) has always been Christ since the beginning of which this study does not take away from.

It is merely presented to provide insight and correction pertaining to these matters of prophecy concerning Israel throughout the ages as scripture reveals.

Proper discernment is required to recognize and divide that which has been written.

Thanks kindly and God Bless

An interesting study, JTF.

In Genesis 28, your understanding is really predicated on the verbs, and what kind of intent they express. Does God anywhere else in scripture refer to Jacob's disbelief? I have never heard of it.

My understanding is that the Law was added because of transgressions; when Israel came out of Egypt, in spite of everything God had done and was doing for them, they started whingeing and saying they preferred to be back in Egypt. God then set them some challenges, which they failed, and then the Law was given.

The two houses definitely have different trajectories and purposes - no doubt about that though. Talk some more about them, but can I suggest you keep your entries shorter, so that people can work through piece by piece?

*[[Jer 33:14]] KJV* Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
........
*[[Jer 33:24]] KJV* Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
