Well, that's right, but there is a more specific answer that is quite interesting.

There are some good Biblical answers here - your question has been answered?!!!

A person could also check the other forums were these questions are being asked -- that might give a bit broader answer! :)

Laish, Bingo.
Congrats to all. The scholars here are impressive! You got it on the first day. The Greek word for sin is amartais. Strong's concordance staates it means "to miss the mark." There is one small error. Strong's analytical concordance has been misleading scholars for years. It's their fault. To miss the mark is incorrect but very close. Allow me to go on.

When the original Greek (amartais) was translated, there was no English word that was even close. So, they found the word sin from the sport of archery. In Archery, to "miss the mark" is to sin. The original greek word meant to miss "God's best."
I am impressed. I felt compelled to post a few things, and I see that You guys are awesome.

God wanted His best scholars to know the proper definition.

There is another question that relates to this one. I believe it is #16. I would post it now, but the Forum has a law against flooding.

Could sin be different to each person because not everyone has the same knowledge, faith, or conscience?

Is Paul indicating here that there are things that can be sin for one and not for another?

1 Corinthians 8 (NKJV)Be Sensitive to Conscience

8 Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. 2 And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. 3 But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.

4 Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords),6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

7 However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse.

9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols? 11 And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? 12 But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

I don't think sin can be different person to person. The sensitivity to the Holy Spirit can be different person to person.

I'm just going to add a bit to this.

Causes of sin will be the same for all people.
Categories of sin will be the same for all people.

But all the specifics of how those things work out in each person will be different.

Question 13 (13th of 16) It is important to know what sin is. Define sin.
Sin is not a matter of opinion, it is only for God to define. Not only does the Bible list many specific sins, it says that sin is knowing the good you ought to do and choosing not to do it.

Well, as long as everyone has been having fun this episode, that's all that matters! :p

The two greatest commandments, love God,and love people, and love works no ill towards their neighbor;therefore love is the fulfilling of the law,and to abstain from sins of the flesh like fornication, idolatry, drunkeness, and such.

The moral laws, laws of love,is what we keep.

Although we have to stay away from sins of the flesh, loving people is the fulfilling of the law,for nobody can love people perfect unless they are led of the Spirit, and if led of the Spirit they are right with God and love Him,and they will abstain from sins of the flesh for they are led of the Spirit, for they love people perfect.
