Don't know how many of you have spent time reading the 8th Chapter of Proverbs, and, to be honest, I just spent some "serious time" reading it this past week-end. I was struck by the nagging feeling that this particular Proverb was all about Jesus Christ. That concerned me a bit, and I wasn't sure if I was reading into it, or simply misunderstanding it, so I decided to check out some of the Commentaries concerning this Chapter.

First:

Proverbs
8

1 .) Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
2 .) She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
3 .) She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
4 .) Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
5 .) O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
6 .) Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
7 .) For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 .) All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
9 .) They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
10 .) Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11 .) For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
12 .) I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
13 .) The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
14 .) Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
15 .) By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
16 .) By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
17 .) I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
18 .) Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
19 .) My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
20 .) I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
21 .) That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
22 .) The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
23 .) I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
24 .) When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 .) Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
26 .) While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
27 .) When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
28 .) When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29 .) When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30 .) Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31 .) Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
32 .) Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
33 .) Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
34 .) Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 .) For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
36
.) But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Of the Commentaries, I chose to refer you to John Gill's for consideration:

Introduction

INTRODUCTION TO PROVERBS 8

This chapter contains the instructions of Wisdom or Christ; showing the excellency of them, and the author of them, in opposition to the harlot and her allurements, in the preceding chapter. Christ, under the name of Wisdom, is represented as an herald, publishing the Gospel in the ministry of the word, either in person or by his servants, Proverbs 8:1. The places where this proclamation is made are described, Proverbs 8:2; the persons to whom, Proverbs 8:4. The excellency of the things delivered, being right things; truth, agreeably to the word of God, plain and easy to be understood, and of more worth than gold, silver, and precious stones, Proverbs 8:6. And then Wisdom, or Christ, is commended and recommended by his consummate prudence and knowledge, by his hatred of evil, and by his influence on the political affairs of kings and princes, Proverbs 8:12; and the advantages of those that are early seekers of him are pointed out; their enjoyment of his favour, of his riches, honour and righteousness; and their being led by him in right paths now, and inheriting eternal glory hereafter, Proverbs 8:17. And next follows an account of his existence from eternity as a divine Person, illustrated by a variety of phrases, Proverbs 8:22; and of his being with the Father; of his great affection for him, and complacency in him; and of Christ's wonderful delight and pleasure in the sons of men, Proverbs 8:30. And the chapter is concluded with an exhortation to them to hearken to his instructions; setting forth the happiness of those that wait on him in public ordinances, and find him; and the misery of those that hate and reject him.

Yes interesting.. But did not Jesus say that He made the world or that the world was made through Him.... ?

The one being talked about in the chapter seems to have been braught forth (created)

30 .) Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
Since Jesus created the world the one being spoken of in the above verses seems to be saying that he witnessed Someone else creating the world.. Therefore how can He be Jesus?

I believe that Proverbs chapter 8 is speaking of the wisdom of God,and how people should seek that wisdom, and how God possessed that wisdom from everlasting, which means He always had wisdom and not something that He attained at any point in time.

What throws people off is the way it is worded which sounds like it is separate, but that is only the way it is worded, and is part of God,the same as love, peace, joy, mercy, and such,of His attributes.

Job 28:12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
Job 28:13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
Job 28:14 The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.

Psa 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Pro 2:5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
Pro 2:6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Pro 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
Pro 3:14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
Pro 3:15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
Pro 3:16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
Pro 3:17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
Pro 3:18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
Pro 3:19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

Pro 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

I believe Proverbs 8 is speaking of plain wisdom and not Christ specifically, and how it is important to attain unto the wisdom of God,because that is what the book of Proverbs is about wisdom, understanding, knowledge, the fear of the LORD,and such things, that cause people to be wise in the ways of God.

Proverbs 8 is personifying wisdom.....not talking about Jesus.

In that all wisdom comes from God, wisdom is calling here to those that will listen. In this chapter, some of the emotions of God, and those things that most people are not aware of.

Proverbs 8:1 Doth not wisdom cry? And understanding put forth her voice?

Wisdom is crying out to all those that will use their common sense and listen to the voice of wisdom.

Agree, for the most part, with each of you and your beliefs. To be clear...........as I read this Chapter, I am saying it reads as if it is speaking of the "wisdom OF Jesus." The "wisdom OF God."

God is a "wise" God............

Particularly, these two verses:

Proverbs 8:6. And then Wisdom, or Christ, is commended and recommended by his consummate prudence and knowledge, by his hatred of evil, and by his influence on the political affairs of kings and princes, Proverbs 8:12; and the advantages of those that are early seekers of him are pointed out; their enjoyment of his favour, of his riches, honour and righteousness; and their being led by him in right paths now, and inheriting eternal glory hereafter,

maybe that is more clear...........
