During doctrinal controversy I was not in a church for a long time.

Now I am in a church and believe I should pay tithe.

Should I shrink my budget (not eat sushi, etc.) or should I believe that God will compensate my expenses and order sushi today?

Note that I never paid tithe before, because my income was zero at the time I visited a church before.

You should shrink your budget.

Because you are not giving to get rich or to get compensated, you are giving to help others. This is the meaning.

The prosperity gospel made such a mess in the minds of people...

It depends on whether you intend to pay 10% of your gross or net earnings :). If its net, by all means, buy the sushi and consider it a religious deduction.

First of all, I'd examine scripture to see if a "tithe", or 10% is required. (it is not, scripturally, in the NT)

We are to purpose in our hearts what we WANT to give to God... it doesn't necessarily all have to go to your church.

Giving to a children's home, or to a homeless shelter are good ways to "give"....

Trying to make 10% some magic number to shoot for is wrong, in my opinion.

We are to be good stewards of what God has given us, and use it to further His kingdom.... it is up to each of us, individually, to decide what we need to give to accomplish that.

spot on in my opinion as well. To tithe is to give 10% of your income which is an old testament command in which we are no longer obligated. We can give 1% or 100% if we so choose. One thing to think about is that its a issue of trusting God to bless us and allow us to "reap bountifully" as we sow bountifully. But its not required under scripture.

2 Corinthians 9:6-7English Standard Version (ESV)

[SUP]6 [/SUP]The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[SUP][a][/SUP] will also reap bountifully. [SUP]7 [/SUP]Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

I haven't asked whether to pay tithes, but whether it is wise to shrink my budget after the decision to pay a tithe.
Do you need to? If your finances are such that you have to, then, sure. If you don't have to, then why worry about it? And, if you don't know, how do you think we will?

Don't presume the Lord will magically give you money. He will provide for your needs but you'd better assume responsibility for any excesses. What is sushi?
