If I sense something wrong I immediately ask God for forgiveness in Jesus name.
I don't. I thank Him for having, 2,000 years ago, forgiven me by going to the cross to destroy sin's consequences for me.

1. Does it involve hurting someone else?

2. Is it a broken promise?

3. What can you do to make it right and just?

4. Have you prayed and asked God?
1. No.

2. No.

3. Nothing. Only God can forgive sin.

4. Yes. I'm still not sure.
Regarding #3, I think what Ariel was getting at was that there are things we can do to "make things right". If your sin was stealing something, then you return the item or pay for it. If damaging someone's reputation, then publicizing a retraction and apology. If speaking harshly to someone, acknowledging it as wrongdoing to that person and asking their forgiveness. True, only God can forgive the sin, in the sense that you are not held accountable to Him. However, you still may be held accountable before men for your sin. :)

I would suggest that, as a general principle, the more time you spend with the Lord in your devotional life, the more likely you are to be sensitive to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that whatever is not of faith is sin, not merely the transgressions against the Old Testament law. The Holy Spirit will speak clearly to you about these things when He is ready to do so. Just ask Him.

It's not you rossella...some members have a profound dislike for the word repent.

I want to post happy words of encouragement, but actually feeling kind of run down myself.

Even at my lowest point i can offer to pray with you, read some scriptures, listen to music as we wait upon the Lord.

Dear God we need you.
No, we LOVE the word. We are disappointed and saddened by the way many people have made something different out of it... a strange new doctrine that Jesus never taught.

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord

Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our Strong Deliverer
You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint
You won't grow weary

Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our Strong Deliverer
You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint
You won't grow weary

You're the defender of the weak
You comfort those in need
You lift us up on wings like eagles

I never meant to insinuate one didn't mean to repent. It just seemed obvious to me that having faith meant one would already have repented. Sorry for the confusion.
Sorry. From your posts, I wouldn't have concluded that you knew, probably, even the date you repented several years ago, but would have seen you as thinking you had to again repent whenever you fouled up your walk with Jesus.

What do you do if you think you might have sinned, but aren't completely sure? Should you repent and would that be true repentance?
IMO,Be aware that GOD Is looking at JESUS and JESUS has no sin and you are a member of the body of CHRIST,joined spiritually to HIM and In HIM there Is no darkness.

GOD looks at the heart, man looks at the outer appearances, the spirit was created perfect and sealed.

Be conscience of your right standing before GOD and be renewing your mind, presenting your body a living sacrifice, but If you think you might have sinned against your neighbor, go to your neighbor and talk to them and If they have been offended In some way by you, then make things right with them.
+++
Romans 8:10

King James Version(KJV)

10.)And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Hi Willie: If you are comfortable with that then so be it. I like to personally ask forgiveness. God has given us the opportunity while we are in this life to be forgiven of whatever, if we repent and ask for that forgiveness...I am going to take advantage of that opportunity while I can.

I don't. I thank Him for having, 2,000 years ago, forgiven me by going to the cross to destroy sin's consequences for me.
Me too....I do what Jesus said to do "Repent and believe the gospel". Mark 1:15

In doing that, I talk over everything to the Lord and I do confess ( which means to say the same thing) that what I did was wrong and thank Him for the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank Him that in Christ I have redemption the forgiveness of sins through His blood. I believe the gospel message of Christ's work.

I also confess ( say the same thing again ) that Jesus is my righteousness and that He is my life. For I have died and my life is hidden with Christ in God. Col. 3:3

You know - He just loves on me and His grace empowers me to walk free of anything that is destroying me or others when I rely totally on the finished work of Christ. All of heaven responds to the work of Christ.

The true Christian life is a wonderful journey of grace, love, hope and faith in what Christ has already done for us.

The religion of Christianity is an enemy of the Lord Jesus Christ and although it can have the "appearance" of good - it really denies the power of God to manifest outwardly the exchanged life that we have because we are in Christ - we are a new creation.

Acts 26:20
I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that all must repent of their sins and turn to God--and prove they have changed by the good things they do.

And I certainly hope you will do that while you still can.

I repented, myself, about 40 years ago, and have been living in His forgiveness ever since.

Amen...I love repenting. What a blessing from the Lord. The Lord grants us repentance. ( Acts 5:31, Acts 11:18, 2 Tim. 2:25)

Sometimes godly sorrow in what I have thought in the past concerning some things produces repentance too. ( 2 Cor. 7:10 - this is when the Corinthians changed what they were thinking and doing concerning Paul and what he had asked them to do ) Sorrow from God is different that sorrow that the world produces.

Mostly I am filled with joy when the Lord grants me repentance as I see new facets of our loving Father's love and grace towards us in Christ and yes this includes all facets of sinning as this destroys us and those around us and distorts our view of God.

Acts 26:20 (NASB)
[SUP]20 [/SUP] but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.

There are "fruits" of repentance.

To us it means to change our mind to stop relying on ourselves and our thinking and turn to God. Stop living our own life with our own thinking and come to Christ and let His life live through and in you. Receive all that Jesus did for us in His finished work.

We should be repenting ( changing how we think towards something ) constantly as we see the Lord's true nature, love and grace revealed to and in us.

Yes - this includes how we view sinning and this will manifest in an exchanged life if we rely on the grace of Christ through faith in Him. The truth is "stopping sinning " is actually the fruit of having already repented. The life of Christ is now manifesting in our behavior.

There will always be "fruits" of having a changed mind ( having repented ) to God but the "fruit" is not the repentance within itself. True repentance is the "root" before the "fruit" comes.

The fruit will manifest itself in the form of having a changed heart because we are a new creation in Christ. This will also show in behavior as the life of Christ transforms our outward life to reflect what has already happened in our inner man - that new creation in Christ.

Sometimes our religious traditions can "hi-jack" the meanings of words and can present false assumptions.

repenting means stopping the sin.
it just does, no matter how we finesse it.
ultimately, the purpose of repentance is to stop the sin.
it's a hard go, especially if one comes to Christ later in life with all the baggage in tow.
nevertheless....changing one's mind is evidenced by the ceasing of sin.

I'm not claiming sinless perfection, God knows.
but the crushed spirit resulting from sin is something I am sick and tired of.
sick and tired of sin.

I reckon that's the starting point for repentance.
sick and tired of being sick and tired:)

Often times 'our hearts condemn us but He is greater than our hearts' We can have a sincere fear and horrid shame of what we just thought and it condemns us to our core. But the Bible says in Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus. Our feelings condemn but not God.

I used to think we are to pray for a pure heart like David did when he wrote "Create in me a clean heart oh God" The truth is we have been given new hearts now and are under a new covenant of grace. The process now is we thank Him for His gift of righteousness and we lean heavy on that gift.

And remember too,., it is the devil who is the accuser of the brethren. Many of our brethren don't recognize the enemy when he condemns them. They think it is their conscience and the Holy Spirit. (very confusing) And the devil likes us to be confused especially if we receive condemnation as if it were good.

Our righteous standing is IN Christ now so we can't get any more righteous than that. When i fall short of the mark 'now' as a believer., I am awesomely aware of the gift of righteousness Jesus provided me for such a time as this.

My repenting is about agreeing with God and how He changes my mind to have the mind of Christ. It's about that right believing allowing me to think right and then to live right. If I am trying to gain approval for my own saying I'm sorry., I have totally missed out on the blessing of honoring Jesus.

I honor Jesus by realizing again His gift of righteousness to me in a moment by moment realization of forgiveness He alone provides., worshiping and appreciating again in a new and living way what Jesus has actually done when He saved me and gave His righteousness to me.

This honors Christ like no sorrow of my sin could ever do. Our emotion of sorrow is not as important as our faith in the fact that Jesus took care of these sins and it is He who will empower us in our inner man to walk in newness of life; by faith.

Judas also was sorry but he didn't apply the sacrifice of Christ. Judas instead applied his own release of guilt by how sorry he is and looks to God.(didn't work) Unlike Judas we are believers and have been born again into the family of God But like Judas many believers think sorrow for sin is the focus God sees (not) and what we can do (not)

BUT what SHOULD really be done and should BE our focus is true repentance which means a change of mind towards God by faith and Christ to give us free access to walking in that righteousness. Not how sorry we "feel" Facts are not feelings and feelings are not facts.

I actually lied about only repenting once, 40 years ago. As I read more and understand more, I find that I repent at least every six months, or so, as I begin to see things that I had earlier totally misunderstood and believed all wrong about.

confessing your sin (as you have done) to us (one another) is a good place to be.
a good sign the Spirit is working.
as painful as it is, remember this:

Hebrews 12
…5And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, or lose heart when He rebukes you. 6For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises everyone He receives as a son.” 7Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?…

Sometimes our religious traditions can "hi-jack" the meanings of words and can present false assumptions.

You correct with this statement.

However, you fail to get to the crux of the matter, Yes positionally we re forgiven past, present and future. Yet when we do sin our relationship is not growing in fact it hinders our relationship with God, we grieve the Holy Spirit. This is why we confess our sins and apologize ... I love that old saying 'contrite heart'.

When we hear new teachings that don't take into account ll of scripture then we must reject them as a 'religious tradition' that hi-jacks the real meaning [your words paraphrased ;) ] or just plainly in error. Its a mistake when we over emphasize one thing over another.

Most mature Christians realize this and they know when they have grieved the Holy Spirit, they will know that the relationship isn't quite right, they also know that positionally they are forgiven in Christ once for all.

Isaiah 66:2

All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.
