New guy here, with a new guy question. Background: I'm a longtime Christian, and I've spent a lot of time over the years studying the bible and various Christian books. I believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. But lately I've been mulling over a rather troubling question:

Is Jesus God?

I have thoughts on both sides of the fence concerning this question:

Jesus is God:

  • Jesus forgave sins. (Matt 9:2)
  • Anyone who has seen Jesus has seen the Father. (John 14:9)
  • Jesus performed miracles.
  • Jesus knew thoughts. (Luke 5:22)

Jesus isn't God:

  • Jesus prayed to God. (Matt 26:36)
  • Jesus "knows" the father. (Matt 11:27)
  • God was well pleased with his son. (Mark 1:11)
  • Jesus' Father’s house has many rooms. (John 14:2)
  • No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. (John 14:2)
  • "If you really know me, you WILL know my Father as well." (John 14:2; emphasis added on WILL)
  • "whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing ... because I am going to the Father." (John 14:12)
  • you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. (Mark 14:62)
  • Jesus was a human man on earth (before crucifixion) born of a human mother, Mary.

Where I am now in my beliefs: I love Jesus, and hope to meet him someday. I believe Jesus died for my sins, ushering in a new era for humanity. I believe his ascension into heaven is the reason the holy spirit was sent to man. I believe we are saved through Jesus by repenting, inviting the Holy Spirit into our hearts and having faith in God. I believe that Jesus is in the Father, and the Father is in Jesus (Matt 14:20). But I don't necessarily think this means Jesus is God. Does faith require that we think Jesus is God?

What are the implications, to me, of having this belief and these questions? Is such belief acceptable to Christian churches?

(Sorry for the extremely long question. :))
I believe Jesus Christ is God in flesh:

“Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and his name shall be called Emmanuel"
(which means, God with us). Matt 23:1 RSV

Well, the implications are that if you do not believe Jesus is God, you will die in your sins.

John 8:[SUP]23 [/SUP]And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.[SUP]24 [/SUP]I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

The best way to see that Jesus is God is to ask the Father to reveal His Son to you so you can believe Jesus is God.

Matthew 11:[SUP]25 [/SUP]At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.[SUP]26 [/SUP]Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.[SUP]27 [/SUP]All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

As it is scripture does testify to Jesus as God just as He is the King of kings.

1 Timothy 1:17Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

[for me anyway] I agree with the witness and testimony of God the Father (whose testimony ought to be enough for everyone), and with the angel Gabriel, and with Peter, and with Martha, and with Paul, and with the Lord Jesus Christ Himself; all of which testify that Jesus is the Son of God.
Because many think above that which is written, and refuse to learn not to think above that which is written, therefore do they exaggerate and over-estimate, and add and expand beyond that which is written.
[for me anyway] this is a matter which ought not to be in any discussion, or even come to mind from anyone: it should be enough that God tells us plainly that Jesus is His beloved Son, in whom He is well pleased; wherefore would any question what God plainly tells us? we ought not to think that our thoughts are higher than His. The answer is evident, but if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

Jesus is God, but Jesus is not Father (therefore He could pray to Him).

For a better understanding, see this illustration:

Est = is
Non est = is not
And you probably guess the rest of the words.
Only believe that Jesus is the Only begotten Son of God. Both Christ and Lord.

If there is anything lacking in your faith, Christ will show it to you.Ask Him.

What you are asking is a great Mystery about the trinity. There are three persons in one God. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

I believe that the only name of God which brings us into His personal presence is the name of Jesus. This is His personal name. This is how we relate to God personally.

Even as a part of the trinity, if you believe that Jesus is The Son of God, then you believe that He is apart of the Godhead. The scriptures make it clear that Jesus is Gods only son, and therefore shares the same Spiritual "DNA" as God.

To clarify (I think): I believe GeorgieDog was referring to my original question, and she quoted your post for the diagram of the Trinity diagram that you provided.

Many thanks for both your thoughts and comments in answer to my question. I have a lot to mull over!

Scripture PLAINLY, EXPLICITLY, and IRREVOCABLY states that Jesus is God.

Read John Chapter one. Here are a couple of the very relevant parts:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

We probably most of us know that by heart. How can it be overlooked? Then verse 14,

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

1:1-18 - John’s Introduction
John begins by identifying his claims regarding who Jesus is. The introduction of John’s gospel immediately introduces the major themes that John intends to discuss. Then he spends the rest of the book proving and demonstrating these themes from the life and teaching of Jesus.

Major doctrines or truths regarding Jesus stated in John 1:1-18:1.
Jesus is eternal and uncreated, existing before the world began (1:1-3).2. Jesus possesses Deity (absolute authority and rulership over created things – 1:1).3. Jesus is a separate Being from the Father (1:1,2,18).

4. Jesus is the Creator – the active force through Whom all things were made (1:3,10).

5. Jesus is the source of truth and understanding of God’s will (1:4,5,14,17,18).

6. Jesus is the source of life by which men have a relationship with God and hope of eternal life (1:4).

7. Jesus became incarnate in the flesh as a man (1:14,9,10)

8. Jesus was rejected by men (1:10,11).

9. Jesus is the One who can give people power to become children of God (1:12).

Page #13 Study Notes on John1:1,2 – The Word was in the beginning with God and was God. The “Word” refers to Jesus, the only-begotten Son of God, as shown by verses 14,17. “In the beginning” must refer to the beginning of creation, as in Genesis 1:1. That this is the meaning is confirmed in v3 showing that Jesus is the Creator. So Jesus existed from eternity with the Father. Note that the use of “was” shows that Jesus already was in existence when the Creation occurred. This simultaneously proves both that Jesus possesses Deity and He is a separate and distinct living Being from the Father.

The Word was “with God” in that Jesus was present in the beginning with the Father (see v3; Compare 1 John 1:2) – so, He is a separate individual living Being from the Father. But He also “was God” in that He Himself possessed Deity. To say there is one God is not necessarily to say there is only one individual Being that possesses Deity. Jesus affirmed that He and His Father are “one” as all believers are to be one (John 17:20,21) – not one individual, but one in purpose, goal, doctrine, etc.

The term “god” refers to that which possesses all the characteristics of Deity and therefore deserves to be worshipped and honored as God. The true God of the Bible is one God, but consists of three separate and distinct individual Beings, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They all possess unlimited power over the created things, all are eternal and unlimited in wisdom, goodness, love, etc.

There may be some differences among them regarding their relationship to one another, but regarding their relationship to created beings, they are all the same. There is no difference to us whether it is the Father who tells us a matter, or the Son, or the Spirit. These three are “one” in contrast to the heathen deities that possessed different characteristics, different wills, different degrees and areas of power, and often even warred and contradicted one another.

Some claim Jesus is “a god,” but not God like the Father is God. Some, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, argue that the Greek “was God” has no definite article before “God,” whereas there is a definite article in “with God.” So, it is claimed that Jesus is god in a lesser sense, different from the Father. So, the “New World Translation” says, “the word was a god.” However,(1) All major standard translations say, “the Word was God.” None say “a god.” So, they contradict the NWT. (See NKJV, KJV, ASV,NASB, RSV, NIV, etc.)

(2) If Jesus is “god” in a lesser sense than the Father, then we would have two different true gods! Clearly, Jesus is not a false god; so, He must possess true Deity. But if He is “god” in a different sense from the Father, that would violate the passages saying there is one true God! Study Notes on John Page #14

(3) Many Scriptures use “God” without an article to refer to the true God. See Matthew 5:9; 6:24; Luke 1:35,78; John1:6,12,13,18; Romans 1:7,17; and many others.

(4) Many Scriptures use “God” both with and without an article in the same context, yet both uses clearly refer to the true God. See Matthew 4:3,4; 12:28; Luke 20:37,38; John 3:2; 13:3; Acts5:29,30; Romans 1:7,8,17-19; 2:16,17; 3:5,22,23; 4:2,3; etc.

(5) The context of John 1:1-3 shows that Jesus is eternal and created all things. (See our later discussion on the character and works of Jesus). To call Him “God” in such a context must surely mean He is God in the same exalted sense as the Father.

(6) We will soon see other passages referring to Jesus as“God” using the definite article. If the NWT distinction is valid, then these passages must prove conclusively that Jesus is God in the same sense as the Father. So, John 1:1 refers to both Jesus and the Father as “God” in a context that affirms the eternal existence of Jesus and that He is the Creator of all(v1-3). This would be blasphemy if He does not possess Deity as the Father does. [Marshall, Vine, Vincent, Lenski, Robertson, and other Greek scholars contend that the article is absent from “was God” in John 1:1, not to imply that Jesus was a “lesser god,” but simply to identify “God” as the predicate nominative despite the fact it precedes the verb for emphasis (Colwell’s Rule). If it had the definite article, that would imply that “the Word” and the Father are the same person. In any case, the Scriptures listed above clearly show that the lack of the article does not prove Jesus is God in a lesser sense than the Father.]

Other passages affirming Jesus’ Deity
Colossians 2:9“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (NKJV, KJV,ASV). Or: “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form” (NASB, RSV, NIV is similar). Hebrews 1:3 Jesus was “the express image of His [the Father’s] person” (NKJV,KJV) or “the very image of his substance” (ASV), “the exact representation of His nature” (NASB), “the exact representation of his being” (NIV). The context describes Jesus as the Creator, far above the angels so that He deserves to be worshipped. But only God is properly worshiped, so Jesus is God in the fullest sense of the word.

God possesses certain characteristics that are so unique that no one but God can possess them (eternal, all-powerful, etc.). If no one but God possesses these, yet Jesus is the exact reproduction of the essence of God’s nature, then He must possess these qualities. But if Jesus possesses all qualities that are unique to God, He must be God: He must possess Deity.

Well, the implications are that if you do not believe Jesus is God, you will die in your sins.

John 8:[SUP]23 [/SUP]And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.[SUP]24 [/SUP]I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
when Jesus refers to Himself as "he" how do you know He is speaking of the Most High? they asked Him "who are you?" and He answers then that He is the same one hes been telling them since He started His mission. before this point He refereed to himself as Son of the Most High, son of man and the Christ, never as the Most High.

Jesus is the Rock of our salvation. God is the only Rock of our salvation.

Psalm 78:35
And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.

Genesis 49:24
But his bow remained firm, And his arms were agile, From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),

Deuteronomy 32:15
"But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked-- You are grown fat, thick, and sleek-- Then he forsook God who made him, And scorned the Rock of his salvation.

2 Samuel 23:3
"The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me, 'He who rules over men righteously, Who rules in the fear of God,

Psalm 42:9
I will say to God my rock, "Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?"

Isaiah 30:29
You will have songs as in the night when you keep the festival, And gladness of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute, To go to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel.

Habakkuk 1:12
Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die You, O LORD, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct.

2 Samuel 22:32
"For who is God, besides the LORD? And who is a rock, besides our God?

Psalm 18:31
For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God,

"There is no one holy like the LORD, Indeed, there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.

Isaiah 44:8

Psalm 19:14
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 62:2
He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.

Psalm 89:26
"He will cry to Me, 'You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.'

Isaiah 17:10
For you have forgotten the God of your salvation And have not remembered the rock of your refuge. Therefore you plant delightful plants And set them with vine slips of a strange god.

Isaiah 8:14
"Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Isaiah 28:16
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.

Psalm 118:22
The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone.

Matthew 21:42
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone; THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'?

Mark 12:10

"Have you not even read this Scripture: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;

Luke 20:17
But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone'?

Acts 4:11
"He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone.

1 Peter 2:6-7
For this is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone,"

Matthew 21:44
"And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."

Luke 20:18
"Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."

Romans 9:32-33
Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, just as it is written, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

1 Peter 2:4-8
And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For this is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

Question: "Is Jesus God in the flesh? Why is it important that Jesus is God in the flesh?"

Answer:
Since Jesus’ conception by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the
virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-38), the real identity of Jesus Christ has always been questioned by skeptics. It began with Mary's fiancé, Joseph, who was afraid to marry her when she revealed that she was pregnant (Matthew 1:18-24). He took her as his wife only after the angel confirmed to him that the child she carried was the Son of God.

Hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of God's Son: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (
Isaiah 9:6). When the angel spoke to Joseph and announced the impending birth of Jesus, he alluded to Isaiah’s prophecy: "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’)" (Matthew 1:23). This did not mean they were to name the baby Immanuel; it meant that "God with us" was the baby’s identity. Jesus was God coming in the flesh to dwell with man.

Jesus Himself understood the speculation about His identity. He asked His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" (
Matthew 16:13; Mark 8:27). The answers varied, as they do today. Then Jesus asked a more pressing question: "Who do you say that I am?" (Matthew 16:15). Peter gave the right answer: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Jesus affirmed the truth of Peter’s answer and promised that, upon that truth, He would build His church (Matthew 16:18).

The true nature and identity of Jesus Christ has eternal significance. Every person must answer the question Jesus asked His disciples: "Who do you say that I am?"

He gave us the correct answer in many ways. In
John 14:9-10, Jesus said, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work."

The Bible is clear about the divine nature of the Lord Jesus Christ (see
John 1:1-14). Philippians 2:6-7 says that, although Jesus was "in very nature God, He did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness." Colossians 2:9 says, “In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.”

Jesus is fully God and fully man, and the fact of His
incarnation is of utmost importance. He lived a human life but did not possess a sin nature as we do. He was tempted but never sinned (Hebrews 2:14-18; 4:15). Sin entered the world through Adam, and Adam’s sinful nature has been transferred to every baby born into the world (Romans 5:12)—except for Jesus. Because Jesus did not have a human father, He did not inherit a sin nature. He possessed the divine nature from His Heavenly Father.

Jesus had to meet all the requirements of a holy God before He could be an acceptable sacrifice for our sin (
John 8:29; Hebrews 9:14). He had to fulfill over three hundred prophecies about the Messiah that God, through the prophets, had foretold (Matthew 4:13-14; Luke 22:37; Isaiah 53; Micah 5:2).

Since the fall of man (
Genesis 3:21-23), the only way to be made right with God has been the blood of an innocent sacrifice (Leviticus 9:2; Numbers 28:19; Deuteronomy 15:21; Hebrews 9:22). Jesus was the final, perfect sacrifice that satisfied forever God's wrath against sin (Hebrews 10:14). His divine nature made Him fit for the work of Redeemer; His human body allowed Him to shed the blood necessary to redeem. No human being with a sin nature could pay such a debt. No one else could meet the requirements to become the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world (Matthew 26:28; 1 John 2:2). If Jesus were merely a good man as some claim, then He had a sin nature and was not perfect. In that case, His death and resurrection would have no power to save anyone.

Because Jesus was God in the flesh, He alone could pay the debt we owed to God. His victory over death and the grave won the victory for everyone who puts their trust in Him (
John 1:12; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 17).

Yes.......

All things were created by him and for him

He is the physical ICON of the invisible Heavenly Father

The Father judges no man, but has committed all judgment unto the SON
I saw the dead stand before GOD, and the books were opened and they were judged out of those things written in the books.

I and my Father are ONE

etc.........The divinity of Jesus is proven....rejected by many in the world...yet proven!

Are you part of those who believes God should not be compared with man? Yes but not when we want to compare the way we were created with the way He was.

Genesis5:1 If truly He created us in His image and likeness, the ONLY way we can know God is to take a proper study of the man. Or has anyone ever Seen Him
Scripture informs us God tjat is not a man as us and neither is there any daysman between God and man. He has no nature as a beginning. He is supernatural and remains without mother or father. God cannot create another God. The created one would have a beginning as in natural man .?

He is Spirit and has no form we therefore walk by faith the unseen and not by sight after the temporal used as a demonstration, as that seen .

In the creation of man we see the two, male and female they are made one creation, one breath of life(Spirit). This is unlike any other creature he made them male and female. In that way we can see the likeness. (Father and Son ) as one. And as a new creation when we receive our new bodies we will be one, no male and female, no Jew or Gentile.

Like the father and Son, one Spirit. This relates to us as new creatures no longer of the flesh. As man and woman are one it of like our husband Christ, the Son of God and us His bride.

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

When Jesus said He and the father are one, it is in respect one in Spirit, the essence of life.

It can be seen in the new government according to the ceremonial law 1 Corinthians 11 in respect to covering or no covering ordinace

1Co 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Interesting the order is first represented by that seen (Jesus as the Son of man and then downward.) then adds, the head of Christ is God. God is represented as that not seen to represent the father. Christ the Son of man seen represents the Son of God Christ not seen.

In that way I believe the term father and Son would be two attributes of God together working in perfect harmony and submission to each other as one God, one Lord .and one Spirit of faith.

The father being in a greater position and not the greater person .This is the same with His creation man and woman
One faith as a work of both attributes to bring us the peace of God that surpasses all human understanding..

Which is first in respect to the father as that not seen and as an demonstration the Son of man as that seen. As the father draws us we come through the Son of God demonstrated by that seen the Son of man. We learn by the father not seen revealed in the Son .

It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that "hath heard", (the faith principle) and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father. Joh 6:45
