I think a lot of people are under the impression that the purpose of the Lord’s commandments is to save us from eternal retribution. If one takes time to think about it, however, I think you will discover that it is possible to get into a whole lot of trouble right here on earth, and that by obeying the Lord’s commandments, that can be averted.

“You know the commandments: `Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'" Luke 18:20 RSV

Is that a fair answer?

Are you saying,we could get Into a lot of trouble here on earth by trying to keep one or more of the ten commandments that would offend society In order to be accepted easier In this world system?

A person would be deceiving themselves by thinking they could keep them anyway and maybe trying to keep one might make society look down on you but before GOD that person would already be condemned anyway.

Only JESUS kept the law and those In CHRIST,members of HIS body do not have to strain to keep the law because JESUS Is the vine providing the nourishment and we are the branches displaying the fruit.

Are you speaking of the Ten Commandments, or the Law of the First Testament?

Actually, I think the purpose of the commandments was to show us who God is. He's the only one who keeps them perfectly always.

And in that we see how far we have fallen from who we should be.

And when we notice that, we come back right where the Israelites should have gone in the first place. Saying, "God, I cannot do this. Help me."

Considering you missed context and most of the commandments, no, it isn't a fair answer. (Jesus then told the man who said that he was supposed to sell everything and follow him.)

Here are the real Ten:
1 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
2 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
3 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
4 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
5 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
6 “You shall not murder.
7 “You shall not commit adultery.
8 “You shall not steal.
9 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.”

How do you deal with them? Personally, the only ones I can handle are 7 and 8. The 5th and 10th is really tough, but the first four are just about impossible.

If all we had to do was the Ten Commandments then there was no reason Jesus had to come and die.

The purpose of the commandments is to Reveal sin.....

So that all human beings will become guilty in front of God....

The law makes everyone guilty because everyone has broken the Law...

The Law sets humble people up to embrace the forgivness of God through the Atonement of the LORD Jesus Christ..

Sadly the proud resist conviction and God resists the proud,, So they are doubly doomed..

So swallow your pride people and never resist the conviction of the Holy Spirit..

The New Testament tells us what the purpose of the commandments are.

They are a schoolmaster to lead us to Christ. Gal 3

They are designed to show us how sinful we really are. Rom 7

They are designed for the ungodly and disobedient. 1 Tim 1

It's also good for helping us see what God's definition of "good" is.

(How do you know you need saving without knowing what you need saving from?)

i believe the purpose of commandments is to show us Kingdom living, and how it is in Gods kingdom. Jesus walks softly but carries a big stick.

Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Psalm 2:9

And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. Revelation 2:27

And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. Revelation 12:5

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. Revelation 19:15

Looks like Jesus means business.

You do know that just because Christians are not under the Law, which includes the Ten Commandments, that we are not without law, right?

In, under, without... wordplay. I know not of any persons walk and also I am not the judge, all I can do is read Scripture, and go from there.

Scripture is beyond clear: "Unless heaven and earth passes away" "the first heaven and the first earth had passed away"

The Scriptures -
And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to fight with the remnant of her seed, those guarding the commands of Yah and possessing the witness of יהושעMessiah."

King James Bible -
And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Matt 5:18, "For truly I say to you; Unless heaven and earth passes away, one yodh--the smallest of the letters--will in no way pass from the Law, until all things are perfected."

Revelation 21:1-2, "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no more sea. And I, Yahanan, saw the holy city, YHWH Shammah, coming down from YHWH out of heaven, prepared as brides adorned for their husbands. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying: Behold, the tabernacle of YHWH is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and YHWH Himself will be with them, and be their Father.”
