Amen.....it is comforting to know that He is faithful to us no matter how screwed up we can get in our thinking. I believe it is so important to know the "why" of the gospel in the first place. It will settle and establish our hearts - for it is good to have our hearts established in grace.

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
praise Him in His mighty heavens!
Praise Him for His mighty deeds;
praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

Praise Him with trumpet sound;
praise Him with lute and harp!
Praise Him with tambourine and dance;
praise Him with strings and pipe!
Praise Him with sounding cymbals;
praise Him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
(Ps 150)

Psalm 84, “How lovely are Your dwelling places, O יהוה of hosts! My being has longed, and even fainted, For the courts of יהוה ; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living Strength. Even the sparrow has found a home, And the swallow a nest for herself, Where she has put her young ones – Your altars, O יהוה of hosts, My Sovereign and my Strength., Blessed are those who dwell in Your house, They are ever praising You. Selah. Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, Your Highways are in their heart. Passing through the valley of weeping, They make it a fountain The Teacher also covers it with blessings. They go from strength to strength, Appearing before The Most High in Tsiyon. O יהוה The Mighty One of hosts, hear my prayer; Give ear, O The Most High of Ya‛aqoḇ! Selah. You can praise God for both, especially when He reveals how He makes the bad into a blessing, like with Joseph and his brothers.

The things we suffer now are but a moment to the glory we will have with God. We can always praise God for that.

I don't believe in praising God "for" the bad. I believein praising God "in" the bad and "in" the good.

He is not responsible "for" the bad but our loving Father can sure take any situation and make that bad into something good and bring glory ( goodness ) to His name.

We can praise Him in the midst of things that we don't understand but we trust in His goodness and grace and love towards us in Christ. This He will show for the ages to come. Eph. 1:7

As you know the Hebrews viewed everything that happened as from God.....Does not the bible teach to be thankful for ALL things....ALL is conclusive of ALL including the BAD things ......God allows the bad things as well........and will say HE uses the BAD things (at times) to mature us or test us and open our eyes.....

Jonah comes to mind.....even though Jonah did not learn the lesson....Paul and the thorn in his flesh, Jesus learned to be obedient by the things he suffered etc...... ;)

New American Standard Bible
But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

King James Bible
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Everything is the bible is truly stated but not everything in the bible is a statement of ultimate truth. Jesus Himself is the Truth and He came to reveal the Father - He said no one knows the Father but I have revealed your name to them. God does not send evil to His children to "teach" them things. Jesus showed us the exact nature of the Father. Heb. 1:1-3.

I believe in giving thanks "in" all things but not "for" all things. Can you imagine this craziness - "Thank you Father for sending the devil to send someone to rape my 9 year old daughter. You have taught me many things from your evil that you sent me to teach me about how loving you really are." Our whole spirit and heart revolts at the very thought of this.

No, a thousand times NO. I would say "Thank you Father that in all the evil that may come - Your love and grace is greater than any evil and I trust You - that you will redeem and restore all that the enemy has done."

In everything we can give thanks knowing that He will be faithful to us and redeem and restore all that the enemy came to do to destroy us - His beloved children.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NASB)
[SUP]18 [/SUP] in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

in = Greek preposition for "in". For example: Matt. 1:20 ..." that which is conceived "in" her is of the Holy Spirit."

Depends on your definition of "bad."

Bad, to me, means "I'm not comfortable. I'm not having fun here. I'd rather not do this. This is bad."

But, really bad has come in many forms for me.
Mom died.
Raped.
Hubby broke his back.
Became disabled.
Hubby became disabled...
(It keeps going.)

In reality, out of that list the only true "bad" was the rapists. The rest comes out of what happens when we live life. And even the rapists wasn't really a bad thing. True, don't like rape. I think all rapists should be killed. BUT if I were not raped, I would not have gotten my head out of my tush and realized how stupid I was being because I was high 24/7. I wouldn't have gone to rehab. Had I not gone to rehab, I wouldn't have landed my first fulltime job after college. (Worked for that rehab.) Had I not worked for them, I wouldn't have been in the same area to look for my next job. (That first job was a grant that only lasted 11 months.) Had I not stuck around the area, I would have never met hubby.

And, had God not taught me how to forgive, even evil...? Well, not sure where I'd be now, but I distinctly remember imagining those guys impaled, by my hand, in ways even slasher movies feared treading. 40 years of that kind of thinking, and who would I be now? Or, who would I be now if I did act on that imagination?

So, I can look at bad at both kinds of bad and still see God working it all out for my good and his glory.

With that, why not thank him for the bad as it happens, specifically because Romans 8:28 is true? Even the bad works out to good. God promised.

In all fairness to Jonah, he could have been like me. A sllloooowwwwwww learner. He did have more life after that plant withered. No telling how he went from there.

PS. 28:7.
The LORD is my Strength and my Shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped:
therefore my heart greatly rejoices; and with my song will I praise Him.

Spurgeon's Morning devotional gave another reason to thank God for "bad."
February 18

Morning

“Shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.”
- Job_10:2

Perhaps, O tried soul, the Lord is doing this to develop thy graces. There are some of thy graces which would never be discovered if it were not for thy trials. Dost thou not know that thy faith never looks so grand in summer weather as it does in winter? Love is too often like a glow-worm, showing but little light except it be in the midst of surrounding darkness. Hope itself is like a star-not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity. Afflictions are often the black foils in which God doth set the jewels of his children’s graces, to make them shine the better. It was but a little while ago that on thy knees thou wast saying, “Lord, I fear I have no faith: let me know that I have faith.” Was not this really, though perhaps unconsciously, praying for trials?-for how canst thou know that thou hast faith until thy faith is exercised? Depend upon it, God often sends us trials that our graces may be discovered, and that we may be certified of their existence. Besides, it is not merely discovery, real growth in grace is the result of sanctified trials. God often takes away our comforts and our privileges in order to make us better Christians. He trains his soldiers, not in tents of ease and luxury, but by turning them out and using them to forced marches and hard service. He makes them ford through streams, and swim through rivers, and climb mountains, and walk many a long mile with heavy knapsacks of sorrow on their backs. Well, Christian, may not this account for the troubles through which thou art passing? Is not the Lord bringing out your graces, and making them grow? Is not this the reason why he is contending with you?
“Trials make the promise sweet;
Trials give new life to prayer;
Trials bring me to his feet,
Lay me low, and keep me there.”

If we're going to keep asking him for faith, he's going to keep doing this to us. :)
