How sad is it, then, that some people in the world don't come to Christ simply because they don't wish to be a hypocrite? They know God's laws under the old covenant and know they are incapable of doing it all. So, in their misunderstanding of the Gospel, they say to themselves, "Why try?" "I'm not going to be like those Christians who are hypocrites to their own rules."
It's too bad that some of the world's perception of Christianity is a religion of rules and regulations instead of reconciliation to the loving God, a fellowship made for eternity. So you are right that one doesn't become good in order to be saved. Just as a doctor comes for the sick, so has Christ came and is, for the unrighteous sinner.
Hypocrisy shouldn't be a reason one doesn't come to Christ. He knows that humans are failures at keeping His perfect standard. This is why He died for us and resurrected, so that we may have life and it more abundantly. Eternal life and so that we would be made new creations led by the Spirit serving in the newness of the spirit. He sanctifies us, progressively through life and also immediately. Hypocrisy then is simply espousing rules oneself doesn't abide by and requiring it of others, but we are not under law but grace, hence sin doesn't have dominion over us.
To sum it up, Christ saved us while yet we were sinners. He came for sinners, and the place reserved for sinners, opposed to fire and brimstone teaching, is not Hell but Heaven. He came to save, not condemn. Sinners, far and wide, no matter how low they are in their current state God's hand is extended. He came for you. For me. For all humanity. That is His desire. To be reconciled.
