Oily Thread on Matthew 25----- what's your thoughts---- opinions------- get your oil ready & be sweet...

The oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The five virgins who had no oil were not saved, they had not the Holy Spirit. The virgins who had oil in their lamps were saved, they had the Holy Spirit. Foolish people are unbelievers, wise people are believers. This is a pretty standard interpretation of the parable.

You can't run short of the Holy Spirit. He is inexhaustible.

I don't read The Message translation. I don't know if it is a reliable translation. Besides, having the Holy Spirit is an either/or proposition. Either a person is saved and indwelled by the Holy Spirit, or the person is not saved and not indwelled by the Holy Spirit.

All through Scripture, the Holy Spirit is typified by oil.

**** I have heard oil represented the work of the Spirit in our lives----when we obey God and seek to please Him this adds to our oil---- we receive more of God as we are faithful---- producing fruitfulness...

I would argue that either a person had the Holy Spirit or does not. There is no such thing as super duper Christians who have more of the Holy Spirit in their souls. Of course, a person who is saved can definitely grieve the Holy Spirit, but that does not mean that a person who is saved and out of God's will has less of the Holy Spirit. He is either present or not.

Yes, some will not be prepared because they are not saved, and leave getting saved until it is too late.

Thats why this "standard interpretation" does not fit in.

Oil can be love.
I believe that oil is used throughout the Bible to be a type of the Holy Spirit, as in the offerings before the incarnation of Christ. For argument's sake, let us say it is love. People who are not saved do not love God. People who are saved, do love God. Do you know of any unsaved people who love Jesus Christ? I do not. They may think He is a good teacher or good man, but they do not love Him.

As you said, the Holy Spirit cannot be it, because it does not fit the story.

Where do you read that all virgins were saved? In the Revelation, God is saying to one of the churches that they left the first love.

Or it can be faith, it fits the story too.

People who have an academic Christianity and think they are saved by works and not faith would think they are saved.

I did not say that all of them were saved. That was 88's interpretation. I am arguing that the five without oil (the Holy Spirit) are unsaved. The five with the oil are saved (indwelled by the Spirit).

Why doesn't the Spirit fit the parable?

The 5 foolish virgins never had the Spirit in the first place, unsaved, so they obviously can not run short of something they never possessed. The 5 wise virgins had oil and it did not run out, they were saved. Jesus has not come back yet, after 2,000 years- yet Christians' lamps are still burning.
