"Then Peter began to say unto Him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed Thee… ."
Mark 10:28
Our Lord replies in effect, that abandonment is for Himself, and not for what the disciples themselves will get from it.

Beware of an abandonment which has the commercial spirit in it - "I am going to give myself to God because... I want to be delivered from sin, because I want to be made holy." All that is the result of being right with God, but that spirit is not of the essential nature of Christianity.

Abandonment is not for anything at all. We have got so commercialized that we only go to God for something (to get) from Him, and not for Himself?

It is like saying, "No, Lord, I don't want you, I want myself; but I (still) want myself clean and filled with the Holy Ghost; I want to be put in your show room and be able to say - 'This is what God has done for me.'"

If we only give up something to God because we want more back, there is nothing of the Holy Spirit in our abandonment; it is miserable commercial self-interest. That we gain heaven, that we are delivered from sin, that we are made useful to God - these things never enter as considerations into real abandonment, which is a personal sovereign preference for Jesus Christ Himself.

When we come up against the barriers of natural relationship, where is Jesus Christ?

Most of us desert Him - "Yes, Lord, I did hear Thy call; but my mother is in the road, my wife, my self-interest, and I can go no further." "Then," Jesus says, "you cannot be My disciple."

The test of abandonment is always over the neck of natural devotion. Go over it, and God's own abandonment will embrace all those you had to hurt in abandoning. Beware of stopping short of abandonment to God.

Most of us know abandonment in vision only."

This is a chilling thought. As I continue my walk I am becoming more and more convinced that some of us who do not think we may never hear the words I did not know you may indeed hear the words "I did not know you."
I also am of the opinion that when Jesus said the gate is narrow, we may not fully grasp how slim that may be.

Joh 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
Joh 6:67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
Joh 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Love, compassion, forgiveness, righteousness, strength, selflessness, wisdom all originated from him. Nothing compares to him.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for the devotional.

What a great reminder to abandon ourselves to God. (Continue the walk of self denial, taking up our cross and following Jesus). Keep on keeping on. Don't give up or give in.

The carnal man will choose the wide and comfortable road as opposed to the narrow path. The vehicle takes you wherever you want to go on that easy pleasure-seeking road. Where the narrow path has to be walked and it's a tight bumpy walk.

To deny ourselves is one that most don't want to choose. We want to be our own Lord and do what we want to do and go where we want to go. We want to rule and reign over our own lives. Simply put, we don't want God.

Our ways are evil and His ways are so opposite of ours. His are pure, holy, righteous and good. The carnal man like to rebel, seeks evil and desires pleasures that are so opposite of God's character.

For those born anew with a circumcised heart, we'll find on that narrow path loving kindness and mercy that enables us to continue on in His abundant gracious love that's been poured into our hearts brimming over so that we can share that love with others as we allow the flow to continue out from us in His grace that enables us to walk in obedience.

Psalm 16:11
You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

John 6: [SUP]66 [/SUP]From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.[SUP]67 [/SUP]“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
[SUP]68 [/SUP]Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. [SUP]69 [/SUP]We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”...the answer to the thread is...because Jesus the words of eternal life...if that is not enough reason, then what is?

Amen.

We need to know God and not just what He does for us.
To know Him is also to open our hearts to become like Him.

Walking in righteousness is not just being forgiven for our sin.

Why are you following Jesus?

I love Him, He is my Lord and Saviour, in Him I have forgivness of my sins,
He is my life, my song, my thought in the morning and my thought going to bed.

He brought me life and brings me salvation, He breathed life into me through His
love and brings life into the family I have.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19

But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Matthew 8:22

As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him. Matthew 9:9

And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.Matthew 10:38

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. Matthew 16:24

Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” Mathew 19:21

So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19:28

Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him. Matthew 20:29

Sorry if i spoke garbage, Jesus words are much better than mine.
