Math 18:[SUP] 21 [/SUP]Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”[SUP] 22 [/SUP]Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

Is Not God telling Peter to forgive his brother for sins his brother has not even committed against him (future sin) yet? Since he is telling him to forgive his brother 70 X 7?

Thoughts?

Are there any other verses which you can think of which show God telling us to forgive others of not only past sin but future?

and finally, Would God asked us to do something he himself does not do?

For me it is all summed up in one word.......Love. But it is our definition of love that determines it.

Most of us think of emotional, personal and holding hands singing touchy feely songs around the camp fire type of love.

And that is not Biblical love or the love we are to live by. We live by virtue love. A love that is based upon our character and integrity in Christ.

It is an impersonal/unconditional love. so no matter what a person does to us, we love that person based upon the virtue of Christ in us.

It is how God loves us. Because He is virtuous, he loves us. I am a scumbag at times, and he doesn't stop loving me at those times and then restarts his love when I stop being a scumbag.

If we have virtue love..........future sins are forgiven. Because virtue love is based upon the character and integrity of what is in us.......Christ.

New American Standard Bible
But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

I agree, Mans view of love is skewed. Gods view of love is so great, I feel we can just begin to understand it. the moment of faith. And it takes a lifetime of learning how great that love is, and even then, we may not fully comprehend it.

Forgiveness is based on Love, If I love you, there is not a thing you can do to me that I would not already have forgiven you already..

but even then, That is hard to comprehend in speaking of God, Because God not only loved us before we sinned, He loved us KNOWING we would sin.

Maybe that is a principle we need to take up..

"I know your going to sin against e, But I forgive you knowing that already"

It may give is a different perspective. and we will not be so angered and shocked when people do sin against us.. and instead, Keep our eyes focused on God, and not a need to have other people satisfy us,, and when they fail, we are broken..

we may even decrease the divorce rate...lol

Good point EG. And it ties into what the 'talk" has been around here as of late.

if we don't take a good hard look at how we personally act and that we fail all the time And put ourselves up on some sort of higher platform.......we are setting the stage to fail when another "sinner" wrongs us.

I am just as capable and have the capacity to sin against another as they are capable and have the capacity to sin against me.

Yes!, And the arrogance of the words never/forever when it comes to self thinking.. I should never think I will never do this or that,,

we should love all people And the ones who sin against us (or we think have sinned against us) we should love more..

Because that is what God has done for us by sending his son to die for us..

That's exactly what I was thinking on the other thread. One of the most dangerous sentence starts out there.........." I would NEVER........"

So does this brother who sins against the person have to repent and ask for forgiveness? Or, is it all good?

Its all Good. But to restore fellowship with this person, we need to get back on the right page with each other.

But am I going to condemn my brother to the Lake of Fire for not asking for forgiveness from me? No. I never held it against him in the first place.

Did you read the comment I quoted? Just wondering...........especially this part........

If one sins against God, then are you saying they do not need to repent and ask forgiveness, because "it's all good?"

I am not directing to this toward anyone, just a comment.

heavenly Father, I confess......... Lord, that was wrong of me, please forgive me. I repent, and will do my best to not..........again.

is that so hard for anyone to do? and is something so simple really worth 15 pages of arguing about?

again, that was not directed at anyone, just wanted to comment.

Did God say he had to repent? Or did God tell peter. Forgive him 7 X 70?

Does true love demand payment for forgiveness, or is it unconditional?

so if I have been saved for 30 years. and commit a sin, And do not repent. I will go to hell? Because God demands my repentance?

Or does God love me unconditionally, and forgave me KNOWING I would sin that sin?

Of course it is not hard. And I would pray we at least named our sin to God and admitted we have fallen short. But if a child sins against their parent, and does not confess, does the parent say he or she is done, and you are no longer in my family?

Or do they mourne because they want what is best for them, And know with this sin they will suffer, But love them anyway?

We all need to repent, all the time. But why ask God for what you already have?

Isn't that what James 5 deals with? God settled the sin issue between us and Him 2000 years ago. The issue now is between us and others. If you have wronged another, go to them and as much as it depends on you, make it right.

Hebrews 10:26-29 NASB

For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries . Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 10:26 can be a stumbling block if we don't take the context in which this passage was written.

Some times well intentioned people take Hebrews 10:26-29 out of context with the book of Hebrews.

Anyone can take an isolated scripture out of it's context and say anything they want. Here is an example in the scripture below - Ex 32:33.
Anyone who has ever sinned is blotted out of God's book.

Exodus 32:33 (NASB)
[SUP]33 [/SUP] The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.

This is truly stated in the OT but it is not the ultimate statement of truth. The work of Jesus's finished work on the cross trumps what is said in Ex. 32:33.

Obviously we need to view all scripture through the finished work of Christ. We don't take obscure verses and discount the abundance of clear scriptures on what our Lord has done for us.

Hebrews 10 is talking about Jewish people after hearing about Christ for the only sacrifice for sins and rejecting it to go back to the temple sacrifices for their sins.

Hebrews was written a few years before the temple system came crashing down in 70AD when it was trampled by the Roman army.

The "willful sinning" is after hearing the "knowledge" of the truth of Christ's sacrifice - those that go back to the temple sacrifices and do not receive Christ's work by faith - this is the wilful sinning being talked about - the rejection of Christ's sacrifice and blood for the forgiveness of all sins.

This is insulting the Spirit of grace. The Holy Spirit's work is to convict/convince/expose the world of their sin - which is unbelief in Christ's work. John 16:8-9

There is a vast difference between receiving the "knowledge" of the truth and "receiving the truth" which is Christ Himself.

A child of God would not go around and sin willingly or habitually,,

1 John 3 [SUP]6 [/SUP]Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. [SUP]7 [/SUP]Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. [SUP]8 [/SUP]He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. [SUP]9 [/SUP]Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
