How does one define heresy? If we have different understandings of the Trinity, does that make one of us a heretic? If I favor works over grace, and you favor grace over works, is one of us a heretic? If I go to a different church than you, is one of us a heretic? If Frankie Avalon was my favorite singer in 1958, am I a heretic?

Heresy is the denial of any one or more of the essential, foundational beliefs of Christianity.

You like Frankie Avalon then you are a heretic hahaha of coarse not that's not sound practice at all. but I'll ask this does Jesus teach on the trinity?

heresy in the Bible from dictionary.com

from a Greek word signifying (1) a choice, (2) the opinion chosen, and (3)the sect holding the opinion. In the Acts of the Apostles (5:17; 15:5; 24:5,14; 26:5) it denotes a sect, without reference to its character. Elsewhere, however, in the New Testament it has a different meaning attached to it.Paul ranks "heresies" with crimes and seditions (Gal. 5:20). This word also denotes divisions or schisms in the church (1 Cor. 11:19). In Titus 3:10 a"heretical person" is one who follows his own self-willed "questions," and who is to be avoided. Heresies thus came to signify self-chosen doctrines not emanating from God (2 Pet. 2:1).

1.opinion or doctrine at variance with the orthodox or accepted doctrine, especially of a church or religious system.

2.the maintaining of such an opinion or doctrine.

3.Roman Catholic Church. the willful and persistent rejection of any article of faith by a baptized member of the church.

If you actually do favor works over grace, directly or indirectly( this is what happens 99% of the time).....You might be a heretic.
;) You would be a heretic.

not believing the core principles of Christianity makes one a heretic.

John 3:16. Twisting this verse to change it to fit our mold.......is where the majority of the heresies come from that we see today.

I kind of like this what is the main core of Christianity? IMO it is Jesus and his teachings.

Jesus instructed to baptise in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit :)

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matt 28:19

Indeed if one was to type did Jesus teach about the trinity in a search engine, most sites say He didn't but fail to see in scripture that he did teach on it.

*** Heresy is departure from orthodox teaching in the Church--- rejecting the Trinity would be heresy---going to a different Church ( as long as they teach the basic truths of Scriptures----example--- Jesus was both God and man) would not be hesesy---liking Frankie Avalon is fine--- even Annette Funacello...

The doctrine of the Trinity is monotheistic Trinitarianism.
I was thinking the doctrine of the trinity deals only with
the nature of one God existing in three eternal persons...

The following is to the board at large :)

How Does the Bible Teach the Doctrine of the Trinity?

The following chart shows some of the many passages in the Bible
from which the doctrine of the Trinity is derived. Note that God the
Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all called God and all have the
same attributes, which are attributes that only God has.

Martin Luther was a "heretic" in the eyes of the church in his time because he said "The just shall live by faith." The established church of his day called him a heretic because he deviated from their belief which they had for around 1,300 years.

A heretic could be anyone who doesn't agree with someone else on a subject. Go against an established church tradition and you will have a heretic in the making - just like Luther was deemed to be.

Touch a religious "sacred cow" and you'll see the malice, slander and hatred erupt from the works of the flesh. They think they are "defending the faith" but in reality they are "defending their church teachings and traditional beliefs".

The Sick days of that, the Catholic Church killed over 14,000 thousand to heresy, at one point if you came into a city you had 8 days to confess or you would be tortured in doing so or died for lack of it.

I believe that a heretic is someone who holds a contrary opinion to a particular belief or doctrine. It may need neither be a good or a bad thing.
