22Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves.
I admit, I struggle with this sometimes Lol.
I think it could be better translated as "Be "livers" of the word, and not 'hearers' or 'doers' only."

I believe you read a lot of the Word and then there is something God would like you to focus on(obviously Love Your God and your neighbors is the base commandment) to go deeper into your walk/heart. That's what makes Jesus the man = He fulfilled ALL the the laws requirements.

I admit, I struggle with this sometimes Lol. I think a good example of hearing and doing is Dorcas. 36In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which is translated as Dorcas), who was always occupied with works of kindness and charity.
Perhaps if you didn't admit it, you would be deceived. So, you are not deceived. That's good. Struggle? Keep climbing up. Eventually those things you struggle with will lose their grip, their hold on you.
Yes, Tabitha is good example. She aligns with James 2.27.

(Matthew 7)

24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

25 “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:

27 “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

hey! was just meditating on these things

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
(James 1:23-24)

it says here that we see our true nature by looking in this mirror - and warns that we should not go on and live as though we have forgotten this nature.

and that mirror?

But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
(James 1:25)

the law of liberty - of freedom. the Word, that we should be not only hearers of, but that that word should be planted in us in good soil, and remain, and grow, becoming mature and producing fruit - fruit that is full of seeds, btw, so that it may produce in others as it has in us.

question:

"
the perfect law, the law of liberty" -- is that a reference specifically to torah? or is this another law?

but foremost, we must look into the word, hearing it, and understanding it -- and from it, get understanding, knowledge of our true nature: both our nature as being human, sons of the first Adam, and our true nature as having entered in Christ, and Christ into us, being redeemed -- and living in the light of these truths, hating evil and loving good, having peace with God through Him who is our reconciliation!

I think it could be better translated as "Be "livers" of the word, and not 'hearers' or 'doers' only."
James 1:22

New International Version
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

New Living Translation
But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

English Standard Version
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Berean Study Bible
Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves.

New American Standard Bible

But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

It kinda sounds like "I'll live the way I think I should" instead of doing things God's way

Maybe you ought to pray & tell God what you think is better.
