In the beginning was the word. And the word was with God...and the word was God. Jesus was the word made flesh etc.

Based on the mini series the Bible. John the baptist knew who Jesus was the moment their eyes met.
I do not recall reading anywhere in Scripture where Jesus had to perform miracles or convince John who he was.

When John was in prison, he sent disciples to ask Jesus if He was Messiah:

Matthew 11:

2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
I was actually surprised not to get slammed for using a TV mini series for hopefully Biblical correct information. ;)

Jesus and John knew each other when they were in the utero!

What are some scriptures that command us to defend God, the gospel or the truth? Why would an all powerful God need defending from little old us?
No, God doesn't need defending, but we need defending God- because when we do so it affirms Whose side we are on, and makes us take a stand for what's right. God can defend Himself, in every way (though He chose not to before the cross, but kept silent). But when we defend God we are making a stand for what's right.

I think it puts us into all kinds of dangerous waters when we can say....the Holy Spirit told me.
You're right it can be, and if you just believe anyone who says that without checking what they say against His word, you may be misled. That is why we have to make sure it lines up with His Word, and His word tells me that the Holy Spirit will lead us to all truth. Now it also says the heart is not trustworthy, so we have to be guided by the Spirit, but ALWAYS make sure it lines up with His word. I agree that anyone can say "the Holy Spirit said it", but the Holy Spirit will always line up with His word. If it doesn't line up, then it's not from the Spirit. I understand what you are saying though, and agree.

What did Jesus do? How did he get people's attention? Did he scream from the rooftops or did he first meet a physical need?
Jesus did not come to meet people's physical needs.
He came do die on a cross for us.

He only did healings and miracles to testify he was the messiah.
He did not heal everyone.
Sometimes he just walked away while a big crowd was looking for him.

He never needed to scream from the rooftops, just as we don't need to scream today.
Why?
Because Proverbs says that God's wisdom, and his spirit, are continually crying out to people from every corner.

Jesus attracted crowds because he "spoke with authority", and not as the scribes and pharisees.
He spoke in ways no one spoke, and he spoke with wisdom which no one else had.
His words were penetrating and mesmerizing, and instantly recognizable as truth... just as the written scripture is today.

To answer the OP:
God does not need defending.
But that does not mean we should never speak.
There are times to answer questions, and times to contend for the truth against falsehood.

If someone says God doesn't exist,
there are many scientific, historical/prophetical, and philosophical proofs.
Yet the bible says that each man, in his own heart, knows there is a God.
So what do we do?
Do we speak or not speak?
We should be ABLE to answer questions... and then do as God leads us in each situation.
