    Default Jesus or Paul?

Jesus told us to repent (Matt 4:17) and some of us believe we should do that. Others say it is unnecessary to repent and quote Paul to back up their position. So are we supposed to follow Jesus or are we supposed to follow Paul?

So do we repent of our sin or is it unnecessary?

Repent literally means to go the other way. To turn from the way you are going and go a different way. It doesn't mean to say you are sorry

So 33, suppose you provide where the Apostle Paul says it's unnecessary to repent? And who are these "others?"

Does not Paul speak of the Corinthian church repenting or does not Jesus tell a few churches in revelation to repent....?

Who has said that Paul does not teach on repentance.....?

How is the word repent used in the N.T. and who is it aimed at?

In this context, repent means to repent of our sin.

Over and over again I witness to the fact that the Lord led me to repent of sin I was committing, and how my life underwent an indescribable transformation at that point. But people on this website always tell me that we are not under the law, and my message is a false one. They will refer to Paul’s statements about how we are not under the law. Here is an example:

But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. Galatians 5:18 RSV

Still...doesn't change the literal meaning of repent. Repent is an action verb. It means to "go" in a different direction.

Paul tells us we are not under the law, and people on this website use that to mean that repentance of our sin is not important. When Jesus tells us to repent, he is telling us to repent of our sin. Anything else wouldn’t make sense.

The meaning is clear and anything else wouldn't make sense. Besides, Jesus told us not to murder, not to bear false witness, etc.

So do you agree with the definition of the word repent I presented to you?

We don't have a full "inventory" of what Paul said, his letters address specific issues with various "churches".

Acts records some of Paul' statements:

Acts 20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 26:20 But showed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Rom 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

2 Cor 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

    2 Tim 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

    Case dismythed.

Very simple. Jesus call to repent was before the cross. Paul preached after the cross. Two different messages.

Well, if all scripture is valid and good for instruction, then it cannot contradict itself. If YOU see a contradiction, who do you think is mistaken?

I think you are creating a crisis where there is none.

Perhaps, is time to start "testing the Spirit/s"? Seems, (at least that which I have experienced in my spiritual maturation/growth), that, the Lord, will "toss" in "proofs", from time to time. Seeings how every one of us is different, what may be something that would "proof" me, would not necessarily be something that would "proof" you......May also consider this a "running check"!

Since Paul said what Jesus told him to say, how about just assuming whoever tells you that you don't have to repent is wrong?

Actually, in that case, I think that is on you. I have seen many people say many things to you, but you rarely hear what they're saying before misinterpreting it.

God forgives us even without our asking...i.e. prodigal son...repentance is our acceptance of His forgiveness and growth in holiness...the important part though it that we accept that we were forgiven...many seek forgiveness for the same sin over and over again...that just means that we haven't trusted His forgiveness in the first place...answer to the thread: both are necessary for our Christian growth.
