I agree....I have found that the more we gave them the law - the more the sin manifested. We can stop doing something by our own will-power for awhile but eventually it will come back. But when we walk by the Spirit then the flesh with the law of sin in it ( rom. 7:20,23 ) loses it's power to deceive us. His life within us is what keeps us now.

I found that I was focusing on myself in trying not to sin and I wasn't really relying on Christ within me but on myself. Big difference and now learning about living by grace through faith in Christ's finished work - I live a holier life then I ever dreamed possible before. Thank you Jesus.

The true Christian wants to live godly because that is their true nature within them as a new creation in Christ.
It tickles me to death when you post in your own words and experience because it usually finally makes me understand what you're saying! And I usually agree with you and get some clearer understanding of a phrase that I have begun to just ignore because I don't understand it or what it means no matter how many times I hear it repeated. And even if I still don't understand a phrase, I am able to better understand what it means to YOU then., which leads to me being able to make a connection to my own experience of living out of the gospel in my own life and experience. All that to just say...it is a true blessing to me when you use the parable of your own everyday life, in your own words, in simple black and white! A real blessing!

1THESS. 4:3-4.
For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

1PETER 1:2.
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit,
unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

3:15-16-17.
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man
that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers,
they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

(sanctified unto good works?)

Well, ya can't be made alive together with Christ until you have died together with Christ.
I'm not going down that road again right now. I need practical help in my race, not argument over one verse that tells me I'm dead when there are still enemies of God within myself, like pride, arrogance, and self love.

Enemies that will never go away this side of eternity. So ya better get used to them. How's that for "practical" advice?

I disagree. He has given me great victories over the enemies in me. Otherwise, there would BE no growth in me. Our enemies are the world, the flesh and the devil. I agree that two of them are never going away but I see great victories almost daily over the enemies that are my flesh.

And on further thought, this attitude that they're never going away and I just better learn to live with them goes against the attitude His Spirit gives me...

kill every enemy in the land. Do not leave one of them alive.
And such and such a king did good in the sight of the Lord. Nevertheless, he did not tear down ALL the idols of his father...

Thats right, it's your flesh. And your flesh will never get better, it will always be set against the Spirit, and the Spirit will always be set against the flesh. That's just the way it is.

And on even further thought, the devil loses more and more ground when the enemies in the land decrease because they are who he incites to rebellion against me and God and they are who he makes rise up in rebellion to harass me.

That's why we pick up our cross and walk. We aren't carrying a hunk of wood for no purpose at all. Someone/something must die on it.

"Someone" did die on it. And we died with Him.

Oh lol...
This is what you should do then. Make as much room as you can for the enemies in the land. Give them a lot of their own ground and try to walk a wide berth around them so they will not torment you. Just learn to live with them and hope they will not rebel and overtake you. Good luck.

Make treaties with them and trust that they won't break them.

Here's what Paul had to say about this: I treat my flesh roughly and make it my slave so that after having preached to others I am not myself disqualified.

And here is another relevant verse: sin desires to devour you but you must be its master.

If it helps any, all three are going away. One we have to co-pound out of ourselves with Christ's strength in us. The other two he's going to pound to smithereens at the end of this world. :)

Then why bother with God?

Then why bother with God?
It sort of begins to sound a bit like this, doesn't it: oh no, we cannot take the land, we have seen how large the enemies are there and they will slaughter us!

For some reason this is reminding me of the story of the pig farmer during the depression. A man came up to his farm and asked if he had any food he could give to him for himself and his family. The farmer had three pigs in the smokehouse, so he said, yes, let me go and bring a pig for you, wait here. So he goes in and grabs the largest one and when he gets to the door he stops and says, why should I give him the biggest pig? One of the smaller ones will be enough. So he starts back, but then stops again and says, no. You know what? I'll give him the largest one and if you don't shut up, I'll give him all three!
