Dan 9:24 (NASB) “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place.

What does it mean to "seal up the vision and prophecy"?

In this time the peoples sin and corruption was so bad that God sealed up visions and prophecy knowing how the people relied so heavily on this kind of like how a parent grounds a kid from their favorite video game.

For the Lord disciplines those he loves

that it was not to be fully understood by them until He called them back to the Holy Land in time for Herod's Temple and the coming of Jesus.
the prophecy was unsealed with John's Rev.

Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
Mat 23:39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Eze 39:21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
Eze 39:22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
Eze 39:23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
Eze 39:24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
Eze 39:25 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
Eze 39:26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
Eze 39:27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
Eze 39:28 Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
Eze 39:29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Jer 46:27 But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
Jer 46:28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.

Jer 33:14 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
Jer 33:15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
Jer 33:16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.
Jer 33:17 For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;
Jer 33:18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
Jer 33:19 And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying,
Jer 33:20 Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
Jer 33:21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
Jer 33:22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
Jer 33:23 Moreover the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
Jer 33:24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
Jer 33:25 Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
Jer 33:26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Jer 31:35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
Jer 31:36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

Jer 32:38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:
Jer 32:39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
Jer 32:40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

Eze 37:11 Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
Eze 37:12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
Eze 37:13 And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
Eze 37:14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.
Eze 37:15 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
Eze 37:16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:
Eze 37:17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.
Eze 37:18 And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?
Eze 37:19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
Eze 37:20 And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.
Eze 37:21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
Eze 37:22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:
Eze 37:23 Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
Eze 37:24 And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.
Eze 37:25 And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.
Eze 37:26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.
Eze 37:27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Eze 37:28 And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.

Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Deu 4:27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.
Deu 4:28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
Deu 4:29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
Deu 4:30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;
Deu 4:31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God)he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

Zec 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
Zec 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Zec 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
Zec 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
Zec 14:5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.
Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.
Zec 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
Zec 14:16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.
Zec 14:17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.
Zec 14:18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
Zec 14:19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
Zec 14:20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowls before the altar.
Zec 14:21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.

Isa 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
Isa 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
Isa 11:3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
Isa 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
Isa 11:5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
Isa 11:6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
Isa 11:7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
Isa 11:8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.
Isa 11:9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

Act 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
Act 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Act 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
Act 1:10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Act 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Rom 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
Rom 11:2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,
Rom 11:3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
Rom 11:4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
Rom 11:5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

Rom 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
Rom 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
Rom 11:27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
Rom 11:28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.
Rom 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

Rev 21:11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
Rev 21:12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
Rev 21:13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
Rev 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Continued,

Because Israel as a nation rejected Christ,God allowed the Roman Empire to overthrow Jerusalem, and scatter them in to the nations, but God said that He would gather them out of the nations, and put them back on their land.Israel became a nation again 1948,and then as birds flying, fighter jets,God would will defend Jerusalem, and perserve it,1967,the 6 day war, where fighter pilots paved the way to win that war,and take back control of Jerusalem.

The disciples asked Jesus if was going to restore the kingdom to Israel at that time, but He said the Father will do it in His own time, which the Jews knew the kingdom would be restored to them in the future, which God said He will make a full end of all the Gentile nations, their operating governments, but He will not make a full end of Israel, but will not leave them wholly unpunished, and when they have borne their shame will restore the kingdom to them,in which God will send Israel 2 witnesses to turn them to the truth that Jesus is their Messiah, which Jesus said they will not see Him again until they say blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord, and if the Jews cry out at any time, even in the latter days, which is now,God will work with them like the days of old,and God said,if the sun,and the moon, and the stars, the ordinances of heaven are still in effect, then His covenant is still with Israel, and if day and night still occur and are going on,He has not cast His people away, and His covenant is still with Israel, and that God made a new covenant with Israel that is an everlasting covenant, the New Testament, which the New Jerusalem is patterned after Israel, for the 12 tribes of Israel, and the 12 apostles of the Lamb, are written in the New Jerusalem.

The Bible says the beast kingdom in Revelation has control of the whole world, and they will attack Israel,in which the Jews cry out to Jesus for God brought them to the truth, and they shall then see Jesus, for they say blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord, the battle of Armageddon,in which Jesus will come back with His saints, and put the world down, and end this sin business on earth, and the kingdom restored to Israel, and Jesus and the saints will rule over the people that were left at the battle of Armageddon who have to go up year after year to Jerusalem to worship the LORD,which is the millennial reign of Christ when the kingdom is restored to Israel, and people will not war with people, and animals will not fight with animals, and animals will not eat meat, and the people that Jesus and the saints rule over, who are in the flesh, will not eat meat, and an animal and human will not fear each other, and a child can lead a crocodile, and the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD,and in that day there shall be one king, and there shall be one LORD,and His name one,and nobody will recognize anybody but Jesus.

Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Israel as a nation has 70 weeks,or 490 years,to finish the transgression, and make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophesy, and to anoint the most holy, acknowedge Jesus as their Messiah as a nation, for that is the truth they must come to.

69 weeks have passed, but the 70th week has not come about, why, because Israel as a nation still does not recognize Jesus as their Messiah.

Israel as a nation rejected Christ, which He came unto His own,but His own did not receive Him,so God allowed the Roman Empire to scatter the Jews in to the nations,as the punishment per the book of Deuteronomy if they did not abice in the truth for a certain period, and the Jews were scattered in to the nations,so they could not come to the truth as a nation that Jesus is their Messiah, and when Israel became a nation again in 1948,they still do not accept Jesus as their Messiah as a nation,so the 70th week has not happened yet.

The 70th week,or 7 years,is the time that God causes all people that do not love Him to follow the beast kingdom, and when they take the mark of the beast, repentance is no longer available to them, and God can end this sin business on earth, and bring Israel as a nation to the truth that Jesus is their Messiah, fulfilling the 70 weeks.

Israel is blinded in part, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in,and so all Israel shall be saved, means,Israel as a nation does not acknowledge Jesus as their Messiah, until salvation is no longer available to the Gentiles when they take the mark of the beast, and so all Israel shall be saved, the kingdom on earth restored to the Jews, which God will make a full end of all nations where He scattered the Jews, but not make a full end of Israel, for God will take away their sins at that time, for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance on His part, for God called Israel, and His covenant is still with Israel, which if the ordinances of heaven, and day and night, are still in effect,His covenant is still with Israel, and He made an everlasting covenant with Israel that leads up to the New Jerusalem, the final destination of the saints for eternity.

Israel as a nation has 70 weeks to get in the truth that Jesus is their Messiah, and in the 70th week God will make sure that Israel does get in the truth, and the kingdom will be restored to Israel in the millennial reign of Christ, for that is the purpose of it,to restore the kingdom to them,as they rule over the people that ruled over them, and this kingdom will be ruled by Jesus and the saints in glorified bodies.

I was thinking that you might know the correct answer but were trying to lure us into a trap. I was hoping to figure this one out too.

I think it means that we're not going to have to worry about burning wooden weapons for fuel for seven years.

When Jesus came during His first Visitation, He might not have gone back to Heaven. It all depended on if the old time Jews redeemed the 70 weeks. They were given 70 weeks to, among other things, seal both the vision and the prophet. During the Babylonian exile God had three prophets in operation at the same time: Daniel, Ezekiel and Jeremiah. But these three prophets were being given two different end time schematics. Though technically Daniel is an OT book, it really is a sealed forefather to Revelation's narrative and doesn't mix well with the OT end time scenario. With the exception of Daniel, is there any OT mention of a second coming?

The original plan was for the Jews to accept their Messiah, then Jesus would have began the Kingdom of God on earth right away because it really was "at hand" at that time. John the Baptist would not have died the way that he did, "lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction". Jesus would have sent disciples out from Jerusalem to invite anyone who wanted to be saved to come and live there in the 1st century. Jerusalem would have eventually grown to such a huge population that it's walls could no longer contain it.

Then, after some time, Lucifer in the guise of Gog Magog would attempt to attack the unwalled Holy City but Jesus would destroy him and his army right where they stood and we would spend the next seven years burying them and burning their wooden weapons. And the wolf would lay down with the lamb and we could watch an infant stick his hand into a viper's den while we built Ezekiel's Temple.

But now instead we get what's behind door #2, the Olivet discourse gets written, Paul gets knocked off his horse, Daniel gets unsealed for the final generation, we get an end time Babylon, Antichrist, mark of the beast, two witnesses of 144,000, Jesus makes His second Visitation and we have a brand New Jerusalem with an end time variation on Gog Magog.

A most holy place did not get anointed, but the vision and prophet have definitely been sealed. We're in the middle of the Daniel/Revelation deal right this minute. At the end of the tribulation Jesus is going to roll this whole place up like a scroll. He's going to destroy those who destroy the Earth and every mountain and island will be removed from its place. When that's over with the wicked will march up over the broad plain of the earth. There'll be no place for the infant to play near the cobra's den, or for the young child to put its hand into the viper's nest and threre'll be no country for old men..

And I and every man's a liar.

Peaceful Sabbath :)

What does it mean to "seal up the vision and prophecy"?
Here are some other translations of, seal up vision and prophecy, that give a more detailed translation ,seal up, has the idea of fulfillment, being it to pass, confirm, ratified. It seems the overall thought here is that all prophecies about Jesus will come to pass, being confirmed in their fulfillment, as He brings in the restoration of heaven and earth.

CEV "
the visions and words of the prophets will come true"

DRA "
vision and prophecy may be fulfilled"

EXB "
to ·bring about the vision and prophecy"

GNT "
so that the vision and the prophecy will come true"

ICB "
to make the vision and prophecy come true"

MSG "c
onfirm what the prophet saw"

NABRE "
vision and prophecy ratified"

NCV "
to bring about the vision and prophecy"

NIRV "
Everything that has been made known in visions and prophecies will come true."

NLT "
to confirm the prophetic vision"

WYC "
that the vision and prophecy be [ful]filled"

Jerome claimed that the Jews understood after the 70 weeks "seal up vision and prophecy" would mean "And so shall the vision and the prophecy be sealed, with the result that there shall be no more any prophet to be found in Israel".

This is from Adam Clarke's commentary:

To seal up (ולחתם velachtom, "to finish or complete") the vision and prophecy; that is, to put an end to the necessity of any farther revelations, by completing the canon of Scripture, and fulfilling the prophecies which related to his person, sacrifice, and the glory that should follow.

1 Corinthians 13:8-10 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they willcease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

What does it mean to "seal up the vision and prophecy"?
It simply means the complete fulfillment of the 70 Weeks prophecy in Dan 9v24-27.

You can find a bit of a blog Here on it...

It is that simple, those verse cover a lot of prophecies, those few verses really do wrap up all the prophecies of wrist send coming and what will happen once He's here. I never realized that until I read what you said here.

Here are some other translations of, seal up vision and prophecy, that give a more detailed translation ,seal up, has the idea of fulfillment, being it to pass, confirm, ratified. It seems the overall thought here is that all prophecies about Jesus will come to pass, being confirmed in their fulfillment, as He brings in the restoration of heaven and earth.

CEV "
the visions and words of the prophets will come true"

DRA "
vision and prophecy may be fulfilled"

EXB "
to ·bring about the vision and prophecy"

GNT "
so that the vision and the prophecy will come true"

ICB "
to make the vision and prophecy come true"

MSG "c
onfirm what the prophet saw"

NABRE "
vision and prophecy ratified"

NCV "
to bring about the vision and prophecy"

NIRV "
Everything that has been made known in visions and prophecies will come true."

NLT "
to confirm the prophetic vision"

WYC "
that the vision and prophecy be [ful]filled"
I have heard this explanation so often ....... Jesus came and offered the Jews the Kingdom but they refused so God put plan B into action and formed the Church instead. Does anyone really think that God had all these plans worked out and then those pesky Jews put a spanner in the works and messed it all up for him? The Kingdom was put in place when Jesus arrived. He said the Kingdom of Heaven is within you. He said the Kingdom was not of this world. It is a Spiritual Kingdom. Many of the Parables explain this.

Careful, I come from a long line of trap-ist monks....:p

That's a good one, you got me.

I had to Google the Trappists, I never heard of them.

I did hear of a guy that wanted to move to a Greek monastery where they have lots of cats.

But I never heard of the Trappist monks who brew beer.

Just when I thought that I knew it all.

Sin will end and something about a 'seal'?...

Ezekiel 28:12
"Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty"

Anoint the Most Holy Place?

As in Day of Atonement?

Revelation 20:2
"And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years"

The Jerome explanation doesn't sound right. No more prophets after the 70 weeks? What about the 144000 or two witnesses? They should be all over the place including Israel.

The Adam Clarke commentary sounds not too bad at first but it's still not right. There's still a lot more Revelations to come and more prophecies to be fulfilled by the Person spoken of after the 70 weeks are finished.

There's just more going on here than is easily understood. I know that my note up there in post 8 sounds strange compared with the traditional understanding. There's also the language of verse 25. The thing that Isaac Newton was talking about. If Newton turns out to be right, then I think that I will be too. This is spooky but it looks for real to me. I think all the translations that use the word "and" in between the seven 'sevens,' and sixty two 'sevens' are the right read on it.

“Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to:

  • [*=1]finish transgression,

[*=1]to put an end to sin,

    [*=1]to atone for wickedness,

    [*=1]to bring in everlasting righteousness,

[*=1]to seal up vision and prophecy and

[*=1]to anoint the Most Holy Place.

This70 week deal depended on the old time Jews accepting their Messiah. They were given 490 years to accomplish those six bullet points above. If something went wrong, if they missed the time of their Visitation, this plan would fail to be sealed and there would need to be an alternative plan ready to. I don't read this as being the same thing as from Daniel 12 where the Book is "sealed" until the time of the end. This is a specific prophetic offer or deal that has a time limit of 70 weeks for the deal to be sealed.

If what I just said is correct the language of Daniel 9 would need to have embedded within the Script a provision for, not just one, but two different Visitations of the Messiah. The Primary Coming [AND] the Secondary Coming which would only be required if the first Visitation failed.

“Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’

"Thus have we in this short Prophecy, a prediction of all the main periods relating to the coming of the Messiah;

  • the time of his birth,
  • that of his death,
  • that of the rejection of the Jews,
  • the duration of the Jewish war whereby he caused the city and sanctuary to be destroyed,
  • and the time of his second coming:

and so the interpretation here given is more full and complete and adequate to the design, than if we should restrain it to his first coming only, as Interpreters usually do".

When I first found this Newton quote it I couldn't make sense of it because I was trying to apply the 62 weeks by itself. Keep reading over what Newton says and then keep reading this translation of Daniel 9:25 with the "and":

"Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes,

[there will be seven 'sevens,'] AND [sixty-two 'sevens.']

[Secondary Visitation] AND [Primary Visitation]

Keep in mind that this was written 2600 years ago and consider that at the time there may not have been a second coming required. The Jews might have cooperated and accepted their Messiah in the first century. Jesus wound have come one time and never departed back to heaven, making a second coming unnecessary. Daniel 9 was written in such a way to include both possibilities in a compact simultaneous fashion.

Sir Isaac Newton
on Daniel 9:

"The former part of the Prophecy related to the first coming of Christ, being dated to his coming as a Prophet; this being dated to his coming to be Prince or King, seems to relate to his second coming. There, the Prophet was consummate, and the most holy anointed: here, he that was anointed comes to be Prince and to reign. For Daniel's Prophecies reach to the end of the world; and there is scarce a Prophecy in the Old Testament concerning Christ, which doth not in something or other relate to his second coming."

"This part of the Prophecy being therefore not yet fulfilled, I shall not attempt a particular interpretation of it, but content myself with observing, that as the seventy and the sixty two weeks were Jewish weeks, ending with sabbatical years; so the seven weeks are the compass of a Jubilee, and begin and end with actions proper for a Jubilee, and of the highest nature for which a Jubilee can be kept: and that since the commandment to return and to build Jerusalem, precedes the Messiah the Prince 49 years; it may perhaps come forth not from the Jews themselves, but from some other kingdom friendly to them, and precede their return from captivity, and give occasion to it."

"Thus have we in this short Prophecy, a prediction of all the main periods relating to the coming of the Messiah; the time of his birth, that of his death, that of the rejection of the Jews, the duration of the Jewish war whereby he caused the city and sanctuary to be destroyed, and the time of his second coming: and so the interpretation here given is more full and complete and adequate to the design, than if we should restrain it to his first coming only, as Interpreters usually do. We avoid also the doing violence to the language of Daniel, by taking the seven weeks and sixty two weeks for one number. Had that been Daniel's meaning, he would have said sixty and nine weeks, and not seven weeks and sixty two weeks."

Is it possible that the sealing of prophecy has something to do with the fulfillment spoken of by Jesus in Luke and Matt?

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place..........

Luke 21:22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
