What do you know about it?

No glasses so will type more in the morning, but I know that God did not give us a spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind.

Many things have been diagnosed as mental illness when it might be spiritual illness and visa versa

I believe that the Holy Spirit can help us tear down spiritual strongholds that the enemy has used to wage war upon us.

That as we leArn wisdom and read more and unstnd God says to us in the Bible we can fight off spiritual enemies and learn discernment to know what thoughts are good and leading to God and which are lies and temptations to lead us away.

What are your thoughts?

Any sermon or book recommendations?

I do not believe that a person led of the Spirit can have any form of mental illness, and even Legion, who had many devils in him,and acted in a wild like fashion, but when Jesus cast the devils out he was calm, sitting at Jesus' feet, and in his right mind, and the people were afraid.

God may not heal us of a physical ailment, but He will always heal us of a mental ailment, and cause us to have a sound mind, and Paul said, with the mind we serve Christ, and we have to make sound decisions concerning our walk with God,and our lifestyle,so God would want us to have the best mental health possible.

This is totally absurd! I run a bipolar group with about 10 people who are Christians. None of them is demon possessed, not even the atheists or pagans. Mental illness, in our day and culture is about a disease of the brain. No matter what it looks like, mentally ill people have a disease that affects their brain, which is why the medications work so well.

I realize Jesus did deliver some people from demons in the Bible. And I am sure in primative 3rd world countries with no Christian influence, there may be cases like this, today. But these would be the exceptions to the rule. It is such a misunderstanding of mental illness. I know Jesus understood that these people had a disease, he cured the illness. But try not to read forward from what jappened in Bible days, into what people are experiencing. It is totally insulting to all mentally ill people to say they are all demon possessed, or that they do not know Jesus!

Jesus provides healing for all illness including mental illness. All sickness is because of the fall of Adam and sin came down on the human race. The good news is Jesus provided healing for all illness. Here are some verses;

Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy]. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.
— Isaiah 53:4–5 (AMP)

But He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
— Isaiah 53:5 (NLT)

… who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
— 1 Peter 2:24

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
— Romans 8:11

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
— Romans 8:32

Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached Him and knelt before Him. “Lord,” the man said, “if You are willing, You can heal me and make me clean.” Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” He said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.
— Matthew 8:2–3 (NLT)

“Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He sent out His word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death.
— Psalm 107:19–20 (NLT)

For He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.
— Psalm 91:3 (NLT)

He also brought them out with silver and gold, and there was none feeble among His tribes.
— Psalm 105:37

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
— 3 John 1:2 (NASB)

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have [it] more abundantly.”
— John 10:10

Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.
— Psalm 91:5–7 (NLT)

With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.
— Psalm 91:16

“…I am the Lord who heals you.”
— Exodus 15:26

“I will give you back your health and heal your wounds,” says the Lord.
— Jeremiah 30:17 (NLT)

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases.— Psalm 103:2–3

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they [are] life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.
— Proverbs 4:20-22
[h=4]Everyone Who Came To Jesus Was Healed[/h]And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.
— Matthew 4:23

News about Him spread as far as Syria, and people soon began bringing to Him all who were sick. And whatever their sickness or disease, or if they were demon-possessed or epileptic or paralyzed—He healed them all.
— Matthew 4:24 (NLT)

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.”
— Matthew 8: 5–7 (NIV)

When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities and bore [our] sicknesses.”
— Matthew 8:16–1

…Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up and went home!
— Matthew 9:6–7 (NLT)

Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them [the] lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them.
— Matthew 15:30

Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed Him.
— Matthew 20:34 (NIV)

And He entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand. So they watched Him closely, whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. And He said to the man who had the withered hand, “Step forward.” Then He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they kept silent. And when He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched [it] out, and his hand was restored as whole as the other.
— Mark 3:1–5

A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind Him through the crowd and touched His robe. For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch His robe, I will be healed.” Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
— Mark 5:25–29 (NLT)

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. “What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
— Mark 10:49–52 (NIV)

When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.

And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed [them] all.
— Luke 6:19

A funeral procession was coming out as He approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. When the Lord saw her, His heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” He said. Then He walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” He said, “I tell you, get up.” Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
— Luke 7:12–15 (NLT)

And a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, He called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Then He put His hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
— Luke 13:11–13 (NIV)

One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, He asked him, “Would you like to get well?” “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.” Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking!
— John 5:5–9 (NLT)

“…how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

I know there is people that have mental illness, and need treatment with drugs, and is not demon possession causing it,but it is a natural disease, but what I am saying is if Jesus impacts a persons life they will have a sound mind,by illustrating the point of the man called Legion, not so much to factor in that he was possessed of devils, but to show that with Jesus impacting a person's life that even in extreme cases they can have a sound mind, only to respond to post 1 that God gives us a sound mind, and can heal even extreme cases, not berate people with mental illness that need help, and say it is demon possession.

I suppose I should of chosen a better example instead of Legion that Jesus healed in the mental arena,as not to offend anybody. It is not the demon possession I am focusing on,but Jesus heals any circumstance, and know there is people that are not demon possessed that can have mental illness, for there are many illnesses that we may get,and whenever someone says they are mentally ill,I do not think it is demon possessed, for it appears as if there is a difference between mental illness, and someone acting crazy being possessed of the devil, and could be they are not healed of a mental illness, but a devil is cast out of them,so they act normal then.

It takes time to learn what the Bible says so don't be hard on yourself for writing what you believe the Bible says here on CC. For sure someone here or many someones here at CC will let you know they don't agree with you or that you are wrong. Some will agree with you and tell you they think you are right. There are many people who have different opinions here. It comes down to what the Bible says and we each have to be convinced in our own mind and hearts.

So as Christians we keep on reading the Bible and hearing it preached and taught and be open to learning from the HolySpirit and other Godly Christians in our lives. Not everyone is going to agree but we all need to be given room to grow in grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus. Welcome to CC JesusRules1

Hmm, makes me think I was just reading Daniel 4 the other night. Though I don't think this case of biblical insanity is demonic possession but rather divine punishment.

Daniel 4:28-37

[SUP]28 [/SUP]All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.
[SUP]29 [/SUP]At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.
[SUP]30 [/SUP]The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
[SUP]31 [/SUP]While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.
[SUP]32 [/SUP]And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.
[SUP]33 [/SUP]The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.
[SUP]34 [/SUP]And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:
[SUP]35 [/SUP]And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
[SUP]36 [/SUP]At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.
[SUP]37 [/SUP]Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

I have a mental illness 2 actually maybe more and think that you are all wrong,ok not all of you is completely wrong.

My illness really took control of my life at 13yrs old I think that it happened during a hormonal shift because lots of things can happen in that time with the hormones.
When that change happened my lifestyle changed along with my mental state and probably brain chemistry,I developed a intense dislike for the world it was/is so intense that I stopped interaction with the world I even stopped going to school I still kept my friends that "stayed the night" so often that they practically lived there so me staying in didn't really affect my relationship with them when they went to parties and stuff I usually stayed home and did stuff like read, watch movies, and play video games,I'm telling you this so you'll see that im not impulsively making comments up.

Because I lived this way I didn't participate in most things that everyone else did like fornication and other stuff that kids do I didn't have sex until I was 17 because my ma taught me the common sense reasoning behind that so I wasn't "sinning" yet I was/am still mentally disabled, what did I do to deserve this punishment by God?
If those that say that it's a punishment believe in reincarnation so you think that my soul did something in a past life I can kinda see the reasoning behind that because
I might believe in reincarnation but im not sure yet,you didn't say that though.

As for the medication I tried that a few times and it made it worse so I never tried again, those that do benefit from medication usually become so dependent on them that they will have in some instances a complete mental collapse with it because the dependency adds to a already bad situation ,sometimes it's so bad that they commit suicide.
The people that produce that medication also produce medication for all kinds of other stuff not just mental disorders and one of the side effects is suicidal thoughts.

You could take medication for something as mild as chronic indigestion then have suicidal thoughts possibly resulting in actual suicide, they warn of this right there on their TV commercials because it's required by law,for primarily this reason I don't think that synthetic medication is good in fact they may have been created specifically for the reason of people committing suicide.

I was just thinking about this but a entirely different aspect of it so I'm going to start another thread involving mental illness but it has nothing to do with this one.

May I ask if your childhood was "priveledged"? Did you enjoy many exciting experiences and watch scary movies, play fast paced video games? I'm working on a theory and it would help to get feedback from people such as yourself.

— Luke 4:40

— Acts 10:38

Thank you for the Bible verses. Will have to read them in context and pray about them when God grants me more time.

It's confirmation Sunday and my son is joining the church and being baptized this morning.

Any sermon or book recommendations?[/QUOTE

Iamfinallyfree, love the name.

I believe mental illness caused by physical illness is like any illness found in the world. We suffer because of sin..not always our own or our parents, but sin brought about by Adam and Eve. Sin caused by mankind doing their own thing instead of following God.

An example would be lead poisoning that leads to mental illness in young children. The cause is that mankind used lead paint.

I am not sure if I am making any sense.

However you said you didn't go to parties and such. I didn't either but it wasn't because of mental illness, but my mother was strict. When I started going in college, I found it didn't live up to the hype. I prefered going to the playground at midnight and talking to my friends about their dreams.

I know having friends is a blessing from God because many people don't have people they can share their dreams and talk too. Lots don't have that love and support.

Anyway look forward to reading your thoughts.

I am used to bible study groups where we can agree to disagree and the point of discussion is to speak what the Holy Spirit reveals in our hearts.

Sometimes it takes a while to find the right words to speak to reveal what is in our hearts.

We just have to be gentle and patient with one another and listen. God might be using the other person to teach us something that might help us in the task He created us to do.

I believe it allows us to practice the fruit of walking with The Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness and self control.

Ephesians 4:17-24
[FONT=&quot]17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]20 But ye have not so learned Christ;[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

What is mental illness? Do you define it like the world defines it or do you define it as the bible defines it?

We all have our problems and our shortcomings. And we all overcome these problems and shortcomings by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.

Does this preclude the use of medication and doctors? No, that is silly. The medication and the doctors are here by the Grace of God. And the Grace of God falls on the just and the unjust alike.[/FONT]

The way I understand man to be is a machine (body), computer (brain), operator (soul) which is the immortal part of us. We have control over this vessel by being connected to it through an energy field. This would be like someone driving a car, while they are in it. Since everything has to do with energy, God's Spirit can override or work through us. We under certain ways can act as a catalyst for God's power to effect the physical in this world. Our bodies can heal themselves but poor nutrition and genetics may prevent this. I believe divine healing is this energy correcting the bad information. He created and can repair. Just like some machines have mechanisms and systems to assist the needs like temperature and pressure of the machine they serve, so do we. However sometimes, improper use, improper maintenance and defect causes breakdown. When nutrients can not be extracted from the food or the food is void of nutrients, or cannot be delivered to replace cells or bring balance then illness, including mental, occurs.

If we participate in activity that leads to guilt or partake of chemicals that throw off the balance to interrupt the energy field it allows an unclean spirit to gain access to the machine. I believe the body has to have some genetic compatibility with the unclean spirit. That may have something to do with why there seems to be less demonic possession reported these days. I understand that this seems like I'm pulling this theory out of nothing but I have reasons for this rationalization.

Yes, I believe one effect of our sin can be mental illness (and depression).

This is a slippery slope.

Not all with mental conditions are afflicted with demons, but even us that are saved get stalked and harassed by demons.

In fact we are promised they will come. Be on guard. We have peace from heaven. When it departs we must get it back. Demons will leave. They can not stand the blood (one of many examples),nor worship, nor the word, and respond quite readily to authority of the believer NOT WALKING IN HIDDEN,UNCONFESSED SIN.
