Matthew 27:15-18 King James Version (KJV)
15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
Matthew 27:15-18 Modern English Version (MEV)
Jesus Sentenced to Die
15 Now at the feast, the governor was accustomed to releasing to the people a prisoner whom they chose. 16 They had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that they had handed Him over out of envy.

15 This is the feast of Passover. This became tradition and may have even been under Roman law to make the Jews happy and peaceful during the feast where they all were in one city.
16 Barabbas most likely may have been chosen because he was the worse of all the prisoners they had. Barabbas represents us compared to Jesus we are a Barabbas because He took our place and we are free.
17 Pilate decides that he will let the people chose between a harden criminal or the man he found no fault in. Pilate did not want to condemn an innocent man that moved so many people and helped many people also.
18 Pilate knew they didn’t like Jesus but wanted to see how bad they hated Him. Pilate wanted to see if they would let Jesus go if they saw how He being condemned would affect them, Jesus being condemned allows us to be saved.
