Faith. Mormons say they have faith. Why not believe Joseph Smith?

Do you really believe there was a man named Thomas, who doubted that Jesus was raised from the dead? Why would you bring Thomas into this? Where do you read about Thomas?

John 20.
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
[SUP]30 [/SUP]Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. [SUP]31 [/SUP]But these are written that you may believethat Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Well lets see. Healing and raising from the dead are biblical, Joseph Smith isn't. See the difference?

Perhaps I misunderstood. I took your What would it take for you to believe people are being healed or rising from the dead? to mean you believed people are raised today from the dead, as like in the case of Lazarus, and others in the bible, including Jesus.

I do believe, as you, that God did use animals, as Peter the apostle testifies, to speak to people. I don't deny the inspired writings, they've been confirmed.

None of the cat's meows, however, have been confirmed to be speaking, nor has the claim of one rising today from the dead been confirmed.
Just curious. What is this confirmation of which you speak... specifically?

So you believe people are raised from the dead today in third world countries and you believe that because someone says so. You believe a cat spoke to someone.
You believe the bible.
You don't need evidence for your beliefs. Faith is based on ????
But you don't believe the book of Mormon.

Why do you believe the bible, but not the book of Mormon. There must a reason. What is it?

Why would I believe the book of Mormon? Why do you keep on bringing up Joseph Smith and the book of Mormon? We are to test things and to do that we use the Bible. From reading the Bible I know dead were raised and people were healed. I can pretty much judge the book of mormon off what the Bible says and can come up with the conclusion that the book of Mormon is pure trash.

Willie,
And then what will that prove? You will hash those out with me.
You've heard it. I am sure.
We believe, or most, that George Washington lived, was first president. That belief is based on evidence surrounding those claims.
Bible and claims are not empty statements, there's evidence that it is what it claims to be.

So it's your judgment. What is that based on? Calling something rubbish, doesn't say much.
What is in the book of Mormon that is rubbish that separates it from a cat talking today.
Why is one rubbish and the other is not?

If someone were to say the bible is rubbish, what would you say to that person?

Lol Sorry not being drawn into your nonsense. And I don't believe I ever said a cat spoke. Is it possible? Sure God can do anything. And I'm getting the feeling you are a Mormon. Good luck with that

Not a Mormon.
But what is your answer to this: The bible is rubbish?
I am not trying to put out nonsense.
What is about the bible, what do you know about it so that you believe it?

You said people are being raised from the dead in third world countries.
My question was and is: How do you know they are?
Your answer has been: Someone told you.

If belief is based merely on a claim, then what are we left with? Nothing more than any other claim that is made.

Now you are getting the feeling I am a Mormon. I never said I was a Mormon. I never professed such. You can get a feeling that I am, but I hope this will suffice: Joseph Smith is a false prophet. A liar. A blasphemer. A crook. He was a man who taught false doctrine. His teachings lead to death.

Well far as the bible being rubbish. It is called Faith. I have Faith that the entirety of the Bible is true and is inspired by God. It is all about faith. I have faith that God sticks with his promises He has given us through the Bible. I believe I can test things through the Bible that includes knowing who is a false prophet and who isn't. I believe every Christian is guided by the HS and the Bible. So this is how I know if something is rubbish or not and how I know the bible isn't rubbish.

There are what I consider Christian versions of urban myths that circulate in some groups. They are often started by someone who knew someone else who told them about some miracle or other. You can never seem to pin down the source of the information or actually meet the person who witnessed it or received the benefit of it.

Always trust the word of God over any experience. Most if not all these "spiritual experiences" are of the enemy who can transform into an angel of light including his ministers. Sometimes, they may even be positive experiences all in attempt to get one believing in their experience and not the word of God.

I believe I can test things through the Bible.

Yes.
And do you believe we can put the bible to test?

I do.
Not to test them now for myself, but for skeptics and agnostics.

Just because someone says a book is inspired by God doesn't mean I have to, nor should I, believe it is based solely on that statement.
And that takes us back to the OP.

Someone says they saw people raised from the dead in a third world country. Really? We have every right to ask the claimants for evidence.

We put Joe Smith's teachings to the test. We measured them up to the bible. We have found they are contrary to the doctrines of the bible.

God does not expect nor want us to believe in His word, the scriptures, simply because we have a gut feeling they are inspired by Him.

The bible makes a claim. Is there evidence that its claim, that it is the word of God, is valid, is credible, true? Yes.

So back to the OP. Damage done by those who claim: My cat talked to me. Michele Obama is a guy. The dead are being raised in third world countries. Don't believe it, until there's evidence.

I agree with the OP.

Lance, my friend. Thank you!

One of the biggest causes for doubt of Christianity for me is the ridiculous claims of a small number of Christians, which bring shame to Jesus.

As an example, one woman in chat claims that a cat spoke to her, and that she resurrected the dead from a morgue. Over time there have been tons of other ones which made similar claims about healings they performed, etcetera.

Yeah, right, I'm sure she bypassed multiple levels of security and raised a dead person in a morgue and it escaped the news..not..

Another claimed Michelle Obama was a guy and he knew it FOR SURE.

But, even more worrisome than ridiculous claims is the fact that such people are considered gurus on the site by a significant number. People flock to them for advice.

Having come from a cult who claimed to have all their i's dotted and their t's crossed doctrinally, and accused other Christians of being ignorant, I sometimes have to consider whether they may be right about a huge segment of Christianity. They themselves had poor theology, but their assessment of the gullibility of some other Christians seems to be on target.

I am guessing a full third of Christians would find such an individual as mentioned above to be plausible as a source of truth, even though they make outlandish claims.

Anyways, I am considering keeping a running list of ridiculous claims that people make in the chatroom, and bringing them up on a regular basis. Maybe that will shame them into not shaming Christ by making such outlandish claims.

Luckily, Christians in my real life are not so foolish or I'd likely abandon Christianity.
I almost left the faith because of other Christians, but I eventually found a better reason to stay.

Beautiful cat. I had similar looking ones.

I found it odd that Eve didn't think anything about the fact that a serpent "spoke" to her. Perhaps animals had a voice that they could understand before the fall?
Animals do not need to verbally speak in order to be understood.
Neither do we! Even here, we say things without making a sound :D

Thank you for the kitty compliment :) My daughter bought her as a rescue for me :)
