What are your views of the trichotomy of our being? Do you believe that we are what some passages say body, soul, and spirit? Or do you believe that soul is synonymous with spirit?

Please provide Scripture and biblically aligned reason/explanation to back your positions.

And...is this an important issue, why or why not?

I'm guessing you are attempting to establish the trinity doctrine.

I do not believe we are either trichotomous, cut in three, or tripartite, three parts - but that we are functionally whole human beings who function at three levels: spiritual (spirit, pneuma), psychological (soul, psuche), and physiological (body, soma). 1 Thess. 5:23, Heb. 4:12.

Failure to differentiate between to soul and the spirit is the main reason we tend to psychologize all spiritual realities.

I think one might get lost if they spend too much time thinking about this. What we need to do is figure out what the Lord requires of us, not who we are.

We have to know who we are to know what's required of us.

I agree, man. There is probably some kind of significance in Scripture, though, but this is not something we need to know. Thank you for your answer.

The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed
into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Breath of life + physical body = soul.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged
sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow;
it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

So in one argument, humans and animals have the same breath (Ecc. 3:19), which should mean that the soul in some places in Scripture refers exclusively to humans. I've read in various places that the soul is the seat of the Imago Dei (image of God). However, in speaking about the death of a person, it seems the soul becomes synomous with spirit or breath. Interesting thoughts.

This passage convinces me, but other arguments as well.
