This mornings devotional is a great encouragement to show that our true life is only found in Christ and not in "things". God is not opposed to "His children having things" - He is opposed to "things having His children".

Only Christ brings true life. Things are neutral - they can be used for good or for evil. There is a deceitfulness that comes with having our life based on what we have or do not have. This can apply to whether we have this world's goods or don't have them.

The purpose of the OP is to encourage all of us to have our life and completion in Christ alone. Seek first the kingdom of God which is trust in Him alone for life and living and His righteousness ( not our own self-righteousness ) and all things will be added unto us as a by-product of being in Him. Matt. 6:33

As we delight in the goodness and love and grace of the Lord for us - His desires will be born in us and it is His desires that will come to pass as we participate in this with Him.

For it is God who is at work in us both to will ( desires ) and to do ( the capability ) of His good pleasure. Phil. 2:13

Many people are in financial debt today because they are trying to find their security, identity and esteem in material things, instead of in Christ. So they end up buying things that they don’t need to impress people who really don’t care!

This erroneous mindset leads to the destructive habit of folks spending beyond their means, making only partial payments on their monthly credit card bills, and overextending themselves with mortgages they cannot afford and car loans they cannot service. Then, they end up asking God why there is no provision for their debts.

Beloved, being caught in this destructive habit and debt cycle is not God’s heart for His precious children. Let’s understand that having more things doesn’t complete us. Only Jesus can fill that vacuum. So find your security and completion in Christ. You have a treasure in you, One far more precious than anything money can buy. Anchor your security and identity in Jesus and delight yourself in Him alone!

This statement reminded me of a time with one of my kids. He was starting junior high school and it was time to go shopping for clothes/shoes. He just had to have a pair of shoes that cost more than what my husband and I would pay. So we told him we’d pay $50 for shoes and if he wanted the shoes that cost more, he had to pay whatever was over and above the $50 (hint to parents of teens …).

So he went ahead and got the shoes, paid the difference and was oh so happy!

A week or so later, my son came up to me and my husband and told us he was sorry he had paid so much for his shoes. He thought if he had the shoes, other kids would think he was cool. But the shoes didn’t matter and he felt he had wasted his money.

On the one hand I kind of felt sorry for him but on the other hand, it was such an important lesson for him to learn and I was glad he had learned it.

I had something similar happen with my son. I said I would buy him a special new jeans that he wanted for his birthday.

When I took him to Sears to get them - he said - we can't buy that here. We need to get it at a "specialty jean shop" where the other kids got theirs.

Both Sears and the specialty shop had the exact same jeans but the shop cost a lot more. His life was really in his friends acceptance of where he got the jeans from and not just from the jeans themselves.

I believe this principle of trying to get life from sources that do not possess true life applies to all areas of our life - even to "doing ministry" and all aspects of Christian life while on this earth.

In agreement. To look at anything other than our Lord Jesus Christ results in disappointment / dead end. Col 3:4 When Christ, Who is our life shall appear … He (and He alone) is our life.
