A couple years ago I was sitting in church listening to a traveling preacher, when I heard this

"We don't need this old stale bread!!" He said as he held up the precious Bible!

"We need fresh bread!" He shouted!

I remember sitting there shocked as I heard him calling the very book that saved me 'Old Stale Bread'.

Can anyone give me some opinions on this?

Jesus is the Bread of life. He is the living Word of God, whereas Scriptures are the revealed written Word of God. Calling the latter stale is a bit much, but difficult to comment on not knowing any more than you have said. Did he say anything else derogatory about the Bible? Was he someone like Oprah who calls herself a Christian but then turns around and basically calls Jesus a liar?

If even the words of the Bible stagnate in your mind as "one thing, said one time", never again to be new every morning like the manna the Isralites collected each day, then I could certainly see it being equated to bread having gone stale.... like salt which looses its saltiness.

Pro 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Well at the end of the service he started praying for a lady who had cancer. In stead of asking God to heal her he started demanding God to like he was some sort of slave!

No opinion needed 2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

If the breath of God is stale to him then he never knew it to begin with simple as that

I cannot even begin to tell you how many times, over the years, Jesus has shown me entirely new and different examples of the application of the words, "I am the way!" in various aspects of my life.

And, I was taught in, church, that this phrase only meant one thing, and one thing, only! That He was how we get to Heaven.... period!!!

I hope and pray that God's Word never comes to mean only one rigid and structured thing to me.

honestly I'm surprised he even had the guts to command God that is like an ant demanding a human to do it's work. If he confused faith and authority in Christ with demanding God to do what we say I worry about this man....

Some people do have a certain take on Scriptures that rub others the wrong way. Jesus said we do not have because we do not ask, and Paul said to approach the throne of grace with confidence, or boldness. Still, that does not equate to making demands of God :) I understand prayer as a means of helping me to align myself with the will of God, not a means of making demands of God or giving Him a to-do list for me...

probably what eve was thinking when she ate the fruit..Gods old stale word about not eating this fruit, i need new fresh bread...lemme listen to this other guys advice...didnt work out well for mankind though. Gods word is written because He spoke it, the same who spoke and everything that is, became. there is a real movement to either deny what we dont want to hear in the bible, or de value its word completely. this is the result of false doctrines taught by false teachers that are contrary to the Word, so why wouldnt those who accept the false doctrines want to devalue or de authorize the true words of God that they have exchanged for a lie.....

what is written is written and unchangable, when Jesus was tempted He responded with " it is written, it is written , it is written and satan went away. The One thing we have as a weapon against the spiritual forces of evil in the world, is the word of God, "the sword of the spirit" it is written, so that we can Know what is true and what is distorted. truth matters above every aspect of God. the movement away from Gods word will continue to grow and false interpretations will continue to get further away from the truth.

Might I sugest going directly to this man, and asking him about this? I know you are sure you heard what you think you heard, but it might be as simple as that kind of conversation, to be certain.

Most of us in my congregation have no qualms, whatsoever, about speaking to and demanding submission of diseases and ailments. To someone unfamiliar with the way we believe God gave us such authority, it might sound like we are telling God what to do.

Don't you think you might owe him that much courtesy?

When I think about modern day churches, the story of Jacob comes to mind when he wanted to marry Rachel and got tricked into taking Leah into marriage instead.Jacob brought Laban good fortunes because God was with him.
I can't stand modern day churches but there are Gods people there in the flock and in the church hierarchy itself. So like Laban,no wonder why they would want Jacob's there.
When the voice from heaven says "come out of her my people" that would be the end of her.

Try non-charismatic churches. They will be more conservative and that is what you look for, I think.

Without the full context of the message it can be very difficult to make an accurate assessment of this statement.....

a. Was he calling the word of God that
b. Was he calling particular aspects of the Word of God that
c. Was he calling the dogmatic, old fashioned, legalistic approach to the word of God that

etc.......NO way to really form an honest opinion without all the details....

Quote "Can anyone give me some opinions on this?"

I could but it would get me banned from this site.

Needless to say we call that "evanglistically" speaking, traveling preachers do that all the time to gin up interest and have something "new" and "fresh". Shysters really. As one who traveled for 20yrs with my family preaching and singing its sad that these people usually are very good at fleecing the flock. But people "flock" to them. We preached Jesus saves and lifted Him up,we did not preach a denominational message,we traveled in all churches that allowed us to preach Jesus saves and forgives sin. And you know what, these shyster preachers were given more respect from the churches than anyone else. The simple salvation message wasn't good enough, they wanted new and exciting. We eventually stopped traveling, the interest didn't seem to be there anymore. The music wasn't "worship" specifically and the message wasn't new enough, even though people were being saved and healed. People wanted to be entertained, itching ears. I remember going to a certain church where you'd think they would preach about salvation. Three sisters,up in years, came to the alter and got saved. And I often thought "what are they doing here every Sunday? what are they preaching?" The old message is the message and it NEVER goes stale. A song I use to love to sing by the Hemphills was a song we ended each concert with and an alter call....

Jesus Saves

Jesus saves, He still does
He'll make of you someone new
Cleanse the sin that was.
The Holy Spirit whispers
No more must you be enslaved
Just believe it, Jesus saves.

We talk of Heaven's beauty and that's good
We talk of loving others and we should
But to a dying world the greatest thing that we can say
Is "Take a look at Calvary, Jesus saves".

Jesus saves, He still does
He'll make of you someone new
Cleanse the sin that was.
The Holy Spirit whispers
No more must you be enslaved
Just believe it, Jesus saves.

We have heard the joyful sound
Jesus saves, Jesus saves
Spread the tidings all around
Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

Jesus saves, He still does
He'll make of you someone new
Cleanse the sin that was.
The Holy Spirit whispers
No more must you be enslaved
Just believe it, Jesus saves.

Jesus saves, He still does
He'll make of you someone new
Cleanse the sin that was.
The Holy Spirit whispers
No more must you be enslaved
Just believe it, Jesus saves.

The Holy Spirit whispers
No more must you be enslaved
Just believe it,
Just believe it,
Just believe it, Jesus saves.

Well, the Lord's words will always be true and always show us the way. The traveling preacher obviously was wrong. We do want to walk with the Lord (pray constantly) and learn new things, though.
