Rev 3:10: "Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth"

Do you see what I see in that scripture above?.... "Earth dwellers," as in those who "dwell" on the earth.

If "those who dwell" is only referring to people who LIVE on the earth, then why mention this? Is it not obvious that people live on earth and not in space?! There would be no need to confirm this if it were referring to those who LIVE here. So clearly "dwell" has a different meaning here.

There are two things mentioned here... "the hour of trial shall come upon the whole world" (so we know it will be for all nations).. and the second fact is "to test those who dwell on the earth"

Spiritually, someone who dwells on earth is someone who is of the world (non believer). Whereas believers are not of the world.

If the testing were to come upon everyone, both believers and non believers alike, then the message would've been given just from that first bit "the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world" because that gets the point across on its own. So it's clear to me that there is a second fact mentioned, which refers to those who are of the world.... earth dwellers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I've always seen when I've read this scripture.

I found another use of the word "dwellers" in Isaiah 18:3: "All inhabitants of the world and dwellers on the earth" so would be keen to get your thoughts on that, and any other scriptures relating to "dwellers" in a spiritual sense.

1 John 4:4-5: "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them"

John 15:18-19: “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you"

1 John 2:15-17: "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever"

No yelling please. Thanks :)

Spent 30 minutes reading through different Commentaries that can be found with a simple "search" of Revelation 3:10, and, as far as I can see, none of them represent this part of the Scripture as anything other than those who live on the earth. It appears it is simply speaking of mankind.

But there is a thought that this is referring to the Pre-Trib ideology, which could well be true.

Revelation 3:10is rightly know as a passage that supports the pre-trib rapture doctrine, butthe second half of the verse introduces us to the first use of the term "earthdwellers." "Because you have keptthe word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwellupon the earth." 3:10 is the firstuse in Revelation of a phrase I call "earth dwellers" but usually translated"those who dwell upon the earth." This phrase is used eleven times in nine verses in Revelation (3:10;6:10; 8:13; 11:10 2xs; 13:8, 12, 14 2xs; 14:6; 17:8). "Earth dwellers" is a designation for persistent unbelieversduring the tribulation.

the thing that doesn't kill us, will only make us stronger, seems we are in some kind of tribulation now. Heard a preacher say this morning, pray with faith, and not with sympathy. God is in control, no need for begging and pleading.

Lets all just be ready for whatever happens, since we only have clues such as, For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 1 Thessalonians 5:2

The events of the book of Revelation in many ways parallel the events of the Exodus. And like the story of Exodus, God's chosen people were there in egypt during all of the judgments. The difference was that they were untouched by the plagues as a sign (i.e. or witness) as to whose they were and what they believed.

Some of the plagues didn't touch the area of land they were staying in (goshen), while other plagues affected all of them (like death of cattle and darkness). But then the major plagues (like death) "passed over" God's chosen ones who sealed their homes with the blood of the lamb, keeping them from Egypt's tribulation while still there going through it too.

How we may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass ... Let's take a read the next verses what Jesus says,KJVLuke21:34-36 34. And take a heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares, 35. For as a snare it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole Earth. 36. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.

If a literal version is used we can put the statement into context:

Rev 3:10 'Because thou didst keep the word of my endurance, I also will keep thee from the hour of the trial that is about to come upon all the world, to try those dwelling upon the earth.

Notice it says "about to".

This is the "hour of trial" which was to come on the land dwellers of the 1st century AD, centering on apostate Jerusalem.

This is aimed at the Philadelphians that were living when John wrote, he's promising THEM that he would keep THEM "from the hour of trial".

This is applied unto the faith church at Philadelphia and I want to point out a few facts

a. This is also applied and given to the other churches as noted by and evidenced by the generalized statement about Hearing what the Spirit is saying unto the "CHURCHES" as in plural.

b. The word KEEP does not mean to be taken out, but rather means to GUARD, Watch over, Protect from loss or harm.

c. What about the other six churches mentioned and reference point "a".....if this means to TAKE out then we have an issue because the bible does not teach a "split" 2nd coming and gathering together of the elect...Reference 2nd Thessalonians 2, 1st Thessalonians 4, 1st Corinthians 15. If it rightfully means protect and guard from LOSS or INJURY during difficult times (tribulation) then it fits.

The word keep
téreó: to watch over, to guardOriginal Word: τηρέω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: téreó
Phonetic Spelling: (tay-reh'-o)
Short Definition: I keep, guard, observe
Definition: I keep, guard, observe, watch over.

DEDUCTIVELY ponder this!

Thanks for all the posts and some interesting thoughts I'll look into. I also need to find more scriptures to compare the use of that word "dwell".

I do believe one only has to look at the purpose of the Great Tribulation... which is the last call to repentance for all the nations, and God will be focusing on Israel during that time. As it says, their blindness is temporary until the fullness of the gentiles comes in.

I just don't see the church in our age being a part of it, also because the preconditions for His second coming are to do with Israel not us.......

As I understand it, Zech 12:10 is the precondition of Christ's second coming. There will be no second coming until Israel's plea and confession that they rejected Jesus as their Messiah. He will not return until they look to the one they pierced, and cry out for Him to return, mourning for Him.

Matthew 23:37-39: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ "

Hosea 5:15: "I will go and return to My place Till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”

Before there can be a cleansing of Israel's sins, and before there can be a Second Coming, Israel must first look to the one they have pierced and mourn for Him as a person that mourns for their only son. As I quoted in Matthew 23, before Jesus will come back, Israel must plead for Him to return, with the words "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord" (the confession first and then the plea for His return). They don't see Him until these two things happen.

Just like the Jewish leaders once led all to reject Jesus, the leaders will some day lead many Jews to the acceptance of Jesus.

Hosea 6:1-3: Come, and let us return to the Lord; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up. After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight. Let us know, Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, Like the latter and former rain to the earth"

So Jesus returns at the request of Israel. No mention of us anywhere during those days.
