I dunno if this is the same thing, but I have OCD which consists of intrusive thoughts. They can be a real downer and very difficult to deal with. Are the thoughts voluntary or involuntary? Have you considered a counselor? Prayer, study, and fasting is very helpful in combating bad thoughts as well, whether voluntary or involuntary.

There are some wise Christian women here on this site as well that may be able to talk to you personally and help you out.

If you have been diagnosed with OCD then some counseling might be in order. I would recommend looking for a biblically sound Christian counselor though and not one of the new age hippie types.

My OCD acts up the most when my focus turns to God, so I can understand the onslaught when you try and fast. The only advice I can give you is to struggle through it. Continue daily to read the bible and pray. Eventually they become whispers that are easily ignored and shrugged off.

Remember that we can do nothing apart from Christ. He is our strength in these situations. Our focus has to remain on him and his promises.

I wish I could tell you there was a quick fix or that it won't be a struggle, but unfortunately this isn't the case when dealing with severe OCD.

Some of this is natural. We live in sinful bodies in a fallen world. No one is immune from such thoughts. Likely it's that you have OCD making it feel worse than it really is. And you may also have intrusive thoughts, as Forth stated. Which is a symptom of OCD and not a reflection of your heart.

Before you were a believer, how good were you at thinking positive thoughts? Rating it from 1-10 with 10 being "perfect," what do you give for how well you did it back then? If you're being honest, the rating would be 0.

So, now that you are a believer how good do you think you should be now? A 10? Based on what? What you've done? What did you do? Nothing. God redeemed you. You didn't redeem you. So what changed other than God in your life?

Exactly! Nothing has changed from you. You are the you you've been since you were a kid. God does the changing, and he does the effort. Otherwise, we're left with the same effort minus any difference. Any difference, not merely any noticeable difference.

You have OCD. Okay. I get that. I grew up with that because Dad has it. It's a real mind thing, but what it comes down to is the need to control every thought and every action. Worse yet, you also know it's not working. It's distracting at the best of times.

You cannot change. God can change you. Get help to release the need to try and change things. And then let God do the changing of you.

(I've said this to you before on other forums on this site, and yet you keep thinking YOU can do it. You're not crazy. Honest you're not, because you absolutely know you really can't do it. Something has to change. Keep trying the same thing that doesn't work will drive you crazy. Try something new. Get help to unlock whatever that is in you that needs to control everything, and then feel the oozing relief that God is changing you to HIS good. Not YOUR idea of good. This does not change either. No matter how many times you ask, this does not change. Get a counselor who knows how to treat OCD and go from there.)

Thanks for bringing up that some of this is natural. I hope no one thinks I was trying to diminish the fact that we are fallen creatures.

The point I was trying to make is that we don't have the strength to fight the battle on our own and as Depleted has stated, only God can change us.

I would also like to add to what Ugly has said and point out that in our fallen state, we sin. OCD complicates things often because it grabs hold of things we do, think, see, and so on, and uses it against us. The old "garbage in, garbage out" saying is true here. Be careful what you are putting in your head, what you are watching, thinking, and so on. Don't give sin an opportunity.

Simply ignore them and get on with your life...

If you give ANY attention to them, they will only increase in intensity!

I kind of rebuke the worldly views on health and mental health. I like to think that God is always with us, and that any disarray we feel is often a somewhat disconnect from God.

I'll tell you how to override the bad thoughts you have. The thing is, what you are doing is trying to get rid of them or push them away. No matter what, I think that these thoughts are always lurking, spiritually. Maybe there are spirits out there influencing us, or trying to take over our mind and body. Jesus sure seemed to believe in them. But modern science doesn't does it? It completely ignores it, or sees it as a symptom. We each have our own perceptions. Some will say maybe it is this diagnosis, or that diagnosis, which I really believe is unhelpful unless you are looking to suppress them with drugs, or psychological manipulation/psychiatry. This is the American way of healing, and often, it means that many people are 'locked into' that diagnosis forever, just waiting for the day they die. Temporarily yes, but not as a cure which is not really a cure. God is capable of curing anything, right?

Anyway back to the point. If you want to override the bad thoughts you have, you have to replace them with much higher thoughts which are closer to God. And if you ask yourself what can you do or think that is better, you WILL get an answer. However you might find much resistance to it. You have to take a leap of faith.

Think on These Things

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

You will find that if you think about the thoughts which torment you, they go against that whole scripture right? And therefore, it feels like the God of peace is not with you.

Well try it, and observe the strength in it. Spend some time trying to find those good thoughts, that maybe in some calamitous moment or experience were pushed to one side (our natural blueprint in the image of God, love and peace), and into a habit of the opposite (fear and disconnection). For being closer to God, brings you freedom from your burdens. Jesus is of course the way, but in the sense of understanding how to be or think as a human. That is what it means to me anyway. And often ones greatest burden is their own thoughts, more than any struggle they are going through or have been through.

You won't find many doctors or psychiatrists out there who simply prescribe optimism, faith, and love. It seems not even people really do either, but when those kind and humble souls appear, we all appreciate them. And yet these things, optimism, faith, and love are the strongest cure, that no scientifically intelligent mind, is able to comprehend in a tangible way. That doesn't make it not real. God's way is the most real way for anything.

Incurable really means, curable from within. And if one thinks that the chemistry of our body cannot change and you are stuck that way, I say no, I have optimism for greater possibilities, that all things are possible.

If only the world was a world filled with love for each other, our neighbours, complete strangers, even those who do bad things, we might realise that the greatest doctors out there are those who are around us. God works through all of us, not just a select few, or an elite, or those who happen to be well-educated. Even the poorest and most wretched soul can give hope where there is none.

It is still not clear if you have been visiting a specialist and are taking any medication for your OCD...?

If not, this is the first thing you should do, imho. If you had a broken leg you would also call an ambulance.

Meditate on the Psalms, that will occupy your mind with God's word.

Psalms 1:2 "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night."

65:5-7 "My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy."

77:2-3 "
In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints."

6-9 "I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.” Then my spirit made a diligent search: “Will the Lord spurn forever,
and never again be favorable? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious?Has he in anger shut up his compassion?

11-15
"I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples."

119:14-16 "
In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word."

22-14 "
Take away from me scorn and contempt, for I have kept your testimonies. Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes. Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors."

25-32 "
My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law! I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. I cling to your testimonies, O Lord; let me not be put to shame! I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!"

33-40 "
Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I dread, for your rules are good. Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life!"

41-42 "
Let your steadfast love come to me, O Lord, your salvation according to your promise; then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word."

44-45, 47-48 "
I will keep your law continually, forever and ever, and I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts.......for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love. I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes."

54-58 "
Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning. I remember your name in the night, O Lord, and keep your law. This blessing has fallen to me, that I have kept your precepts. The Lord is my portion; I promise to keep your words. I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise."

63-63 "
I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts. The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!"

I don't know if it will help you but I will tell you what I do.

Nothing.

I pray and ask for help from God and just wait and watch.

I let go of trying to control my thoughts and just let them run through my head.

I wait until my mind calms down and I watch my heart.

I watch my feelings. I watch my thoughts.

Sometimes I write down everything I think and feel.

Then I pray and read my Bible.

Then I read what I wrote and highlight the good thoughts in green and I mark out the bad thoughts and replace them with what God says in the Bible.

Bad thought like:

You will always suffer.

Is replaced with the verses in Revelation 21
where God says He will wipe away our every tear.

Evil thoughts enter my mind, but God has taught me to replace them with His truth and His love.
So they don't get to live in my heart.

And finally, the truth will set you free.

It is often a lie, or a lie we tell our self about a circumstance, or a coping strategy that was a lie, that gets us mixed up in a place of confusion and powerlessness.

But when we realise the higher truth in our circumstance, we are set free.

Someone might feel isolated, and think no-one wants to know them, so then they cope by not wanting to know people.

They might not feel like going out, but they cope by saying they don't need to go out.

It seems the most common coping strategy people have for dealing with things, is to suppress their emotions and desire.

But interestingly, and usually temporarily, in building up some optimism (emotion) and motivation (desire) to change it, they realise it wasn't real. On top of that we have perseverance, one must persevere to change something. It doesn't take much to fall off a cliff, and if we survive it can take a while to get back on top of it.

Problems, and feeling we have a problem are often all happening in our mind, and we become trapped in the perpetual problem that seems to come back even when we get away from it. Doctors might say, well yes that is natural as part of diagnosis X. And then if you take that as the whole truth, well you have succumb to the problem as being a part of you forever. And not many people ever really get out of a terminal diagnosis, because they believe it is the truth forever.

I am most interested in miracles, because this is Gods language. For example, I've observed one story where someone crashed their private plane, completely paralysed and unable to breath by themselves, they healed. And these people often say the same thing, that even though the doctor said you will never X or Y again, they had more optimism, faith and love, than the circumstance and the thought of it, crushing them into a forever state of what the doctor said.

God is capable of healing anything. And the pessimist might say, well what about the person who Z? And I say well what about the miracles that you can't explain?

Several people have said to read and meditate in the scripture, and to pray.

I think these simple tools are the solution to most of our problems.

1. WORD:
Spend more time in the bible... read, listen to sermons as much as you can, do bible studies, go to church etc. (Scripture cleans out our minds and hearts, as we read and meditate.)

2. PRAYER:
Pray, and ask your friends and family to also pray.

3. FELLOWSHIP:
Fellowship with other believers to encourage you... at church, out with friends, online, by phone, whatever.

There is no magic bullet.
We just have to MAKE USE OF the simple and powerful tools God has given us.
And we have to use them CONTINUALLY.

Resist not evil.

See this carries a lot of weight that not many understand. When you resist something it often becomes stronger.

But neither is this saying, give in to evil. No, it is more saying, don't spend precious time on the resistance of evil, but spend time focusing on the good, on your faith, on your love, on your connection to God and Jesus.

Many go through turbulent times in their life, and tell themselves they are going to join the church. And this has helped many people get away from that turbulence because they have replaced it with something in the direction of being closer to God. I think many people come to Christianity through this route.

I wish I were an expert at this. I am not. To have faith and resist evil frees us. That's what I've been thinking about today.
