I wanted to know when we die if our souls remain in a state of sleep in our physical bodies until judgement day or does our soul return to God to keep until judgement.

Does anyone have knowledge and insight on this, thank you.

Many scriptures point to.our souls leaving our bodies. The souls in Abraham's Boosom. The thief on the cross which Jesus said would be with him in paradise that day. And more. On my phone so that's the best I can do for now.

It depends on if you are in Christ when you die or not. Obedient Christians, who remain faithful until death, immediately go to paradise by Abrahams side. Those who did not remain faithful to God until their dying breath, will see decay. This means that before they go to torment, they will feel the pain of their body decaying.

God said He would not let His Holy One see decay- meaning Christ. And Christ's church is Christ's body- therefore we are also His holy ones, made holy by Christ's blood, and we will not see decay.

But a vision of the future is like having a dream of a reality that hasn't happened yet. And when Joseph interpreted his fellow prisoner's dream, it came true. He said birds were pecking at his eyes- that's because he couldn't swat them away, cause he was dead, and birds and worms are God's cleanup crew- to remove dead carcuses.

So when someone has died for minutes and comes back- that's a sign that they are not bound for paradise.

All spirits go back to God who gave them regardless of how the person acted on earth,so the saints will eventually not have the spirit, and they will put off the flesh, and have a glorified body.

The soul is all that will remain of the saints in heaven, the soul with a glorified body.

The Bible says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord,so when a saint dies their soul is with Jesus.

At the 5th seal the souls under the altar ask Jesus when He will avenge them, and Jesus said when the resurrection happens, and all the saints are with Him,then He will avenge the saints, and defeat the world.

So the saints are in heaven with Jesus waiting for all the saints to be united with them.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

If the man Christ Jesus resurrected to heaven, then all who confess Christ,on God's side, when they die will resurrect to heaven to,for there is no reason they need to sleep until a later date, for they are a son of God,like Jesus is a Son of God,although Jesus is God manifest on the flesh, the only begotten Son of God,where the saints are adopted in to the kingdom, but they are still a son,and when they die,up they go.

Hello MattforJesus,

I think that the rich man of Lazarus fame would wholeheartedly disagree with you.

According to scripture, when those who are in Christ die, their spirit/soul departs and goes to be in the presence of the Lord as demonstrated in Phil.1:23 and 2 Cor.5:6-8.

When the unrighteous die, like the rich man, their spirits/soul goes down into Sheol/Hades where they begin their punishment. We also know this is true because at the end of the thousand years, the resurrection of the unrighteous dead takes place and their spirits/souls come out of Hades.

"
The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.

Therefore, only the souls/spirits of the righteous depart from the body and go to be in the presence of the Lord at the time of death.

When a person dies, the spirit goes to God n the body which is dust returns to the earth. ( Eccles.12v7) everyperson who dies righteous or wicked.

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, n breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Genesis.2v7)

Soul is a living being. A soul is always a combination of two things body plus breath.

So the breath which is the spirit Goes to God n the body to dust.

The righteous will be resurrected at the second coming of Jesus ( read 1 These. 4v16-17)
the wicked will be resurrected at the 3rd coming(Rev 20v5)

The Soul cease to exist at death.

Pray God leads u to all truth. Amen

Genesis 2:7King James Version (KJV)[SUP]7 [/SUP]And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

When we die the breath of life that God breathed into us goes back to Him that spark of life and we rest until we are called in the resurrection we are unaware of what is going on like a sleep as Jesus told the disciples that Lazarus was sleeping when he was actually dead and other places Jesus referred to death as a sleep.

Ecclesiastes 9: 5For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for their memory is forgotten. 6Indeed their love, their hate and their zeal have already perished, and they will no longer have a share in all that is done under the sun.…

Matthew 9:18While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.” 19Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.

Matthew 9:23When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, 24he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him. 25After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. 26News of this spread through all that region.

The soul of a person is his spirit. of course Adam and Eve both were created dead until God breathed the breath of life into them and then man became a living soul. which is the spirit in the body that causes the body to function. hell starts just below the ground and extend to the center of the earth. anything below the ground is hell. Amos 9;10 gives you insight on this. your body returns to dust just as God said it would, whether it be dust or ashes,or swallowed up by the sea it turns back into what it was made out of. The wicked go straight to deep hell where there is no escape. whether it be hell or paradise ,you return to God, and he give you whatever reward you deserve.

I believe those saved by Jesus Christ go be with Christ, those who are not saved go to hell.

After judgement those not saved are thrown into the lake of fire, and those saved live in the new earth, in the new Jerusalem with Christ.

Chapter 32 The Condition of Man after Death and the Resurrection of the Dead

1. After death the bodies of human beings decompose and return to dust, 1 but their souls, which do not die or sleep, have an immortal existence and immediately return to God who created them. 2 The souls of the righteous are then perfected in holiness and are received into the highest heavens, where they behold the face of God in light and glory and wait for the full redemption of their bodies. 3 The souls of the wicked are thrown into hell, where they remain in torment and complete darkness, set apart for the great day of judgment. 4 Scripture recognizes only these two places, and no other, for souls separated from their bodies.

1.... Gn 3.19, Acts 13.36.
2.... Lk 23.43, Eccl 12.7, Phil 1.23, 2 Cor 5.6-8.
3.... Heb 12.23, 2 Cor 5.1,6,8, Phil 1.23, Acts 3.21, Eph 4.10, 1 Jn 3.2, Lk 16.23, Rom 8.23; see under figure 2 above, Rv 7.4,15.
4.... Lk 16.23-24, Acts 1.25, Jude 6-7, 1 Pt 3.19, 2 Pt 2.9.

2. Those who are alive at the last day will not die but will be changed. 5 At that time all the dead will be raised with the very same bodies and no other than the same bodies they had before, although with different characteristics, which will be united again to their souls forever.6

5. 1 Thes 4.17, 1 Cor 15.51-52. 6. Jb 19.26-27, 1 Cor 15.42-44; see preceding context.

3. By the power of Christ the bodies of the unjust shall be raised to dishonor, but by his
Spirit the bodies of the just will be raised to honor and be made according to the pattern of his own glorious body.7

7. Acts 24.15, Jn 5.28-29, 1 Cor 15.42, Phil 3.21.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe the above to be true biblical teaching regarding this matter (Westminster Confession of Faith). To get the best from this you need to read the scripture references

i will tell you what God has told and revealed to me. Those who cease to live, if they are a True Christian, will sleep until the Rapture, these are they that will rise first even before the living rise to be with Jesus when He gets here to set up His Kingdom on Earth. There is only one day that will determine who goes to Heaven, and that day is the day that Jesus comes to the Earth and the Book of Life is opened. If your name is in that book you will rise to be with Him, whether you are sleeping or alive, you will rise to be with Him for ever and ever.

When a person dies, is NOT the day that determines if that person will go to Heaven or to Hell, that day is reserved and called Judgement Day. It is called Judgment Day because it is that day that humans are judged. That day if your name is written in the Book of Life, you are then SAVED, but only SAVED on that day. The end of the race, the prize is given to a person only on that day. Glorified bodies is the Spirit Body that you had prior to coming to Earth to be tested. Your Glorified body will become yours again on that day when you rise to be with the Lord thy God. All flesh of the Earth will return to the Earth, the flesh that you have now is not nor ever will be in Heaven or Hell, the flesh you wear now is but dust and will decay and rot away into the Earth. The Spirit that is in you has a name, has its own body, that existed prior to it being placed into the flesh that you have now. Doesn't matter to me either way, as long as when I wake (if it's instantly or centuries later) I get to spend eternity with God.

Probably find scriptures to support both or neither.

Hello Taro,

First of all, there is no such thing as "soul sleep." There are too many scriptures that demonstrated the conscious existence of the soul/spirit after death such as:

the rich man and Lazarus, where both men had died and their spirits/souls were conscious and aware under the earth in Sheol/Hades

Jesus telling the man crucified with him that he would be in paradise with him that very day

The souls seen under the altar in heaven at the opening of the 5th seal

Moses and Elijah meeting with Jesus on the mountain where he was transfigured

These are just to name a few. Also, Paul said that to be in the body is to be absent from the Lord and to be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord.

Scripture is clear that when the righteous died, their spirit/soul depart from the body and go to be in the presence of the Lord awaiting the resurrection from that side of heaven.

It depends on whether or not you have trusted in Jesus's death and resurrection for salvation, and have received him. If you believe on the Lord Jesus and receive him, then you go to heaven. If you don't receive Jesus before you die then you go to hell. " He who hath the Son hath life, but whoever hath not the Son hath not life" 1 John 5:12
