Read and study Romans 12. It is exactly what God expects of those of us who call ourselves Christians.

Jesus is our High Priest. We are to bring our sacrifice to him.

Rom 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. ESV

We are to be holy and acceptable to God. Not conformed to this world, but transformed by the renewal of our mind. In other words, we are to live like we belong to Christ. When we belong to Christ, we can discern what God's will is. We will know what is good, acceptable and perfect. Wow! We will know. If we know, what are we to do.

Rom 12:3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. ESV

It's not you or I. It's we. When we accept Christ as our savior, we become part of His body.

Rom 12:9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." 20 To the contrary, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. ESV

Two things stand out to me in this paragraph. "Outdo one another in showing honor" and "Never be wise in your own sight".

When I think of what Christ means when He tells us to love, I think of this chapter of Romans. The love that Christ expects from us is a living sacrifice to him. This is the Christian life.

It tells us a lot.

1. To be living sacrifices and care for our bodies as temples to God because the Holy Spirit lives within us.

2. We each have a measure of Faith and spiritual gift to help us function in the Body of Christ.

This passage has so much...

19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."

20 To the contrary, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head."

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good

What is brotherly affection?

Do we show this by praising our siblings and lifting them up and honoring when we see Christ reflected in their lives?

And yet love cannot be commanded. Go figure.

Do we know the difference between fake love and genuine love?
Genuine love, IMHO, will produce fruit. I believe that verses 9 through 21 tell us what genuine love is. Paul also describes genuine love in 1 Corinthians 13.

Romans 12:9 Let love be without dissimulation

The word "dissimulation" is the Greek word anypokritos and is translated as "unfeigned" in 2 Cor 6:6, 1 Tim 1:5, 2 Tim 1:5, 1 Pet 1:22 and translated as "without hypocrisy" in James 3:17.

I always thought Romans 12:9 meant that our love was to be sincere, genuine, honest, authentic.

I looked up "dissimulation". It means concealment, pretense.

Synonyms of "dissimulation" are pretense, deceit, dishonesty, duplicity, lying, guile, subterfuge, hypocrisy.

We can if we are of full age:

Hebrews 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Expositor's Greek testament says this of the word "senses":

spiritual faculties of perception and taste exercised so as to discriminate between good and evil,” i.e., between what is wholesome and what is hurtful in teaching [Wetstein quotes from Galen]. The child must eat what is given to it; the boy is warned what to eat and what to avoid; as he grows, his senses are exercised by a various experience, so that when he reaches manhood he does not need a nurse or a priest to teach him what is nutritious and what is poisonous. The first evidence of maturity which the writer cites is ability to teach; the second, trained discernment of what is wholesome in doctrine. The one implies the other.

Check out 1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently

Yep ... and praying ... comforting when distressed ... helping when in need ... feeding when hungry ... sheltering ... giving our coat ... forgiving ...

Hebrews 7:12 [FONT=&quot]If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
