why does Christian Holy Bible have different translations? (As of September 2016 the full Bible has been translated into 636 languages)

God Himself inspired his servants to right the Bible in Greek and Hebrew, there are lots of languages since the days of old, but God chose only Hebrew and Greek, why then do we have to change it from it originally inspired version?

the first translation of the old testament book started in 300BC by the Jews, since then, it has become a common trait among men. They translated the Greek into their common language, their excuse was "so that everybody could read it in other for the gospel to spread faster"

God inspired the writers, who inspired the translators?

i think some Christians are behaving anyhow they like this days simply because Christianity has been devalued by some set of persons from the beginning.

if it is possible for the Muslims to learn Arabic before becoming a true Muslim, can't we Christians study Greek and Hebrew in other for we to be able to read the Bible in it original rather than it diluted format!

please i need honest opinions!

God preserved his word

his holy spirit alone is enough to lead you to Jesus if you accept his call

but i personally suggest KJV
(but many bibles are good for correction and reproof)
dont get too caught up in anything men say

Trust in God

people all the time try to twist scriptures to fit their own ideals and desires

but i find
when i just read my bible and pray

truth is revealed

ive dipped my toes in
greek
hebrew
aramaic

but to be honest

it didnt help or hurt

if anything i re-learned a lot of what God already showed me in english

Ah yes the "original manuscripts".

Heres the deal: I speak multiple languages somewhat fluently, english, hebrew, finnish, swedish.
I also happen to own bibles in all of those languages and guess what? IT SAYS THE SAME THING IN EVERY LANGUAGE.
The only thing you are missing from the old testament by not reading it in hebrew is some of the poetic value the psalms etc. have.

You can trust your english or yoruba or whatever language bible you have!

God bless.

In essence you have to translate Hebrew into English in order to teach someone the language. If the original meaning is lost in translation then it would be also be lost to the person who learned the ancient language in the 21st century.

I would also point out, if translations are to blame for the condition of the church then you would see a difference before 300BC right? Well that obviously isn't the case from the text we have. Although I could be mislead by my translation I suppose..

Isn't that interesting, you have to learn arabic to read an uninspired book, but an Inspired book can be read by common people. I know a few muslims and they do not know arabic. It sounds like you've been talking to some muslims and you bought their twisted reasoning hook line and sinker.

Ask the where the original manuscript for the
Qur'an are, because you like to know how they have been analyzed by linguists to verify there validity.

How inspired does this sound, Qur'an Surah 2:65nd you know well those among you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath: We said to them: "Become monkeys! Despised and rejected."

Surah 7:163-166 Ask them about the town which stood by the sea shore. Behold! They sinned in regard to the Sabbath. On their Sabbath day, the fish swam up to them and stuck their heads out of the father {to tempt the people to catch them}.But the fish did not do this on the day that was not the Sabbath. In this way We tempted them because they were devoted to sinning. When some of them said, "Why do you bother preaching to people whom Allah will destroy or inflict with a terrible punishment?" The preacher responded, "To fulfill our obligation to their Lord and avoided evil, but We punished the evil-doers with a grievous punishment because they were devoted to sinning. When in their insolence they transgressed the warning, We said to them, "Become monkeys! Deposed and rejected."

Here's the answer to the story in the Hadith, Bukhara, vol IV, chapter 32, p 415 The statement of Allah: (O Mohammad) about the town that was by the sea, when they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. (1) when their fish came to them only on the Sabbath day and did not come...."Become monkeys! Despised and rejected."

The moral of the story is that these people (Jews) catch the fish on the Sabbath when they were not supposed to and they became monkeys. Does that sound inspired to you?

According to muslims everything that their prophet said is true, he said Adam was 60 cubit tall (90 feet) and that satan was in your nose when you slept, real muslins rinse out their nose every morning and he also commanded his followers to drinking camels milk and urine, ask them if they do that. It's in the hadith Burkhari vol. 1 no. 234

wow, you must be a scholar, i have never been opportune to have Muslim friends, rather did i know what Qur'an or Surah states.

God forbid that i try to compare Muslims and Christians, but all i'm saying is during translation, the translators might decide to omit some words, and also when translating, the zeal and exclamations, connotations indent passion of the original writer will definitely be missing from the translators text.

however, the disciples of Christ traveled to so many places but non of them translated the Bible, they gave it to the people as raw as the writer received it from God

In your own studies what major flaws have you found in translations of the Bible? Im guessing you have examples to have created this thread.

My own studies between hebrew, greek and translated into english is quite accurate.

I also read the KJV and I have been reading it since the age of seven... I am KJV Only for me... Others want to read other translations and version fine by me... Do I know Greek and Hebrew?... I have Strong's An Exhaustive Concordance Of The Bible and a few others that I've collected over the years and have plenty of resources and references... To the young man NonameMcgee stick with your KJV if guided by the Lord and it will bring you comfort and joy as you study it... I've been reading and studying it over 63 years and it is as sweet to me today as it was the first time I opened it up... May you experience the same joy... K. James

Some brothers and sisters in my church are not able to read Portuguese (our national language), much less will they be able to learn Hebrew and Greek.

In Nigeria the official language is English but you have Bibles in Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Urhobo, Ibibio, Edo, Fulfulde, and probably in hundreds of other languages. Why? Because it's much easier for people to assimilate God's word in their native languages.

Now imagine a person who is called by God at old age; their remaining lifetime won't be enough for them to learn Hebrew or Greek.

The Bible being translated in to different languages has nothing to do with losing its meaning, but so people of different languages can understand it.

People can converse with each other today with their different languages somehow, without losing meaning.

I read through the Bible, and if it is not a perfect translation it does not do any hindrance, for it is the same theme throughout the whole Bible, and I do not see what could be amiss, for the Old Testament, and the New Testament, collaborate with each other, and agree with each other, and as far as the main theme of the Bible does nothing to hinder that.

I do not see what is amiss, for it is the same theme throughout the Bible, and is simple,Old Testament, spiritual laws, could not live up to it perfectly, lack of Sprit like today, physical ordinances until Christ came, blood of animals covered their sins,Jesus came took the sins away completely, led by Spirit can live up to the spiritual laws, and all people that accept in the New.

Old Testament need a sinless man to redeem mankind,New,God manifest in flesh, sinless man, mankind reconciled to God,God and man in harmony, all who receive Spirit in harmony with God.

Old,earth and heaven will be no more,and new heaven,and new earth,New,the old earth,and old heaven,will be no more,new earth,New Jerusalem,new heaven.

Old Testament, the beast kingdom, will devour the whole earth, tread upon it,and break it in pieces,New,the beast kingdom, has power over all nations, kindreds, and tongues.

Old Testament,world persecutes Christians,they resurrect,New,world persecutes Christians,they resurrect.

Old,God comes back with all saints, defeats world, saves Israel,New,Jesus comes back with all His saints, defeats world, saves Israel.

Old,saints have eternal life,New,saints have eternal life.

And on,and on,and on,and I do not see what is amiss,or how something left out, added, actually does any hindrance to the theme of the Bible, for I have not seen anything that would make me think, hey, now this throws off the Old Testament,or wait a minute, this throws off the New Testament, because it is not translated right,so there will be contradictions, for I have not seen it,for it is the same theme throughout the Bible.

I believe people make a fuss that how do you know it is the right translation,so they can either dismiss the Bible, criticize it,say it is supposed to mean something else.

If it is not translated to the exact tee,I do not see how adding that,or subtrating something, can make a difference, unless they wipe out entire books,or add entire books.

God inspired the writers, who inspired the translators?
Greetings Synergy,

Since God is the author and is the One who inspired the writers, could He not also inspire the translators? When studying any given scripture, many times I will go down the line and look at all of the major translations column by column. Don't you think that God is smart enough to get His word out accurately for all the world to understand it in their own language. Do you think that God would leave that totally in man's hands? Do you see any differences between these major translations below that would change the meaning of what is being said?

New International Version
If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

New Living Translation
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

English Standard Version

Jubilee Bible 2000
that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

King James 2000 Bible
That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.

American King James Version
That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.

Hello Synergy
As you mentioned the Hebrew scripture were translated in to Greek before the time of Christ 's coming some 300 years earlier. There were Greek copies all about Jerusalem when our Lord was here . Jesus didn't mention them at all . He did not say the Hebrew copies of Scriptures were the preferred ones . If that was the case wouldn't He have at least have warned us once ? What about all the books written by the apostles? Wouldn't there be a warning there not to translate the scriptures?
Just by the very omission of such a warning,we should be reasonably assured that a translation in to our native languages is acceptable.
Blessings

The fact that the Bible has been translated into so many languages is a good thing. Does anyone really think that the 84 year old from a small village somewhere is going to all of a sudden want to learn Hebrew and Greek from the ground up? Maybe if they first were able to read a translation in their own language, it could cause a spark of desire in him/her.

If a missionary goes into remote towns and villages to preach the gospel to those of a foreign tongue, doesn’t he/she have to translate to talk to them? Should this missionary only try to share Gods message in Hebrew and Greek? So why then, would this same missionary be wrong if they gave the villager a Bible which was translated into their own language?

While I don’t think that the word of God should be limited to only those who fluently speak Greek and Hebrew, I do think that it is important to cross reference translations and check within interlinear sources from time to time. This can be done easily through the internet or interlinear book translations though. I don’t believe that salvation is dependent on what language you speak.

The beautiful thing about the Bible is that we can actually go back and compare our translations to the Greek and Hebrew sources. We can compare between hundreds of manuscripts for authenticity. This lets us know if there were any changes or variances made throughout history. It lets us verify that the translations that we are reading are authentic.

Unfortunately, some religions do not have the same assurance that what they are reading has not been changed or altered over time. For instance, In Islam there is no way to go back and look through all the hundreds or even thousands of manuscripts throughout history when verifying the copies have not been changed over time.

In fact, because there was so much strife between tribes over the correct translations of the Quran, the Caliph Uthman Ibn Affan, gave orders to gather up ALL writings of the Quran…and have them burned! Then he put out a single “official” copy of the Quran, saying that this was the true Quran. Now, Muslims have no way of checking the authenticity of their manuscripts, or what has been altered or changed over time. Unlike the Bible, they only have the official government issued, post burned, Uthman copy.

However, even though Uthman tried to burn all traces of varying Quranic manuscripts before putting out his official copy, there were still a few that survived to this day. One being the Sana'a manuscript. It shows variances in its translation when compared to the Uthman Quran that today’s Islamic community hold as the unchanging word of God. Guess you have to have a lot of faith in the unchanging word of…Uthman…if you believe the Quran is authentic.

One of the things that makes Christianity so great (besides the fact that it’s the truth), is that we have a freely distributed gospel that has been freely distributed around the world for centuries. Not a book that has a burnt past and requires faith just to believe it has remained unaltered. Christians can look up the past and vast wealth of freely distributed manuscripts. They can cross check and verify if writings have varied over time. Muslims can only look back to Uthman and a pile of ashes.

I don’t worship a God who can only hear prayers in Arabic. I worship a God who can hear all nations and tongues. To your example of the Muslim learning to speak Arabic…what good does it do for someone who learns to speak broken Arabic and barely even understands what they are reading? Do you really think that God would want or need a person to understand Him like that? Sounds like they would get less clarity if you ask me.

That's what anyone who is serious about studying God's Word is doing now...

But, most Christians just believe whatever the cat up front behind the podium says on Sunday mornings... you know, in between naps, texting, and playing video games on their cell phone of course.

Hey, that's a good one... if it's some guy teaching extra biblical stuff and isn't a good shepard over the flock, maybe we should call them a "podium keeper"
