I have a lady that is a friend of my family. A really sweet lady. Her husband was verbally abusive to her and she was quite afraid of him. Well she was suddenly taken ill with a mysterious disease,I couldn't give the name. She was diagnosed and given a medication that had horrible side effects,one of which was losing her eyesight. Last fall we were afraid she wasn't going to survive.She was sent to Colorado and found out that she was misdiagnosed. Through all of this her husband came to church and got saved. Now every time the church doors are open he is there,whether she is well enough to go or not.

The problem is that while I know she happy that her husband has had a total change and has come to the Lord I sense that she is really frustrated and depressed over losing her sight. She was a very active person and now she can't look after her grandchildren,drive,or work. She feels her sickness is what brought her husband to church. She attends the same church I do and people are praying for her to be healed but I see she's feeling stressed that everyone in church wants to pray for her every Sunday.

So I wondered what are some good verses that would encourage her in her situation? Verses that would uplift her and give her courage as she faces all these changes in her life. Thank you.

I would say the psalms, chapter 46, 91, chapter 23, chapter 121, the psalms are always a good way to go.

Alternatively and/or, you can point her to romans 8 too, that's also a comforting chapter for believers.

2 Cor 4 comforts me, and (speaking of comfort) 2 Cor 1:3-5.

or, just pass the tissues.
can she ask folks to pray for her privately if it's making her stressed?

Thank you brother. She had a brief period where her eyesight improved and then she lost it again. So thats been very hard for her and the doctors cannot say if she will ever see again. Thank you for those verses.

She's just a shy lady and everyone is coming to where she sits and prays for her or drags her to the altar without asking if she wishes to go.I know people mean well, and so you hate to her anyones feelings. But I do sense it stresses her and she is tired from these last months and her ordeal. I dont think people understand that she's been through a long illness,a misdiagnosis, and now blindness. Its a lot. I dont know anymore than she does of how to tell people she appreciates the prayers but its a little taxing. She came to church with our family,so all these church people are new to her. I just wish there was a polite way to tell them to give her a little space. Thank you for the verses sister.

man, i can't imagine losing sight in addition to everything else. :(

i'm sure people are just loving her, and don't realize it's a potential problem.
may the Lord show mercy to her.

I really feel for her. Her husband made a joke when we were all at my parents place about her blindness and everyone laughed and my husband said " maybe that hurts her feelings ya'll" Everyone just moved on in the conversation and I heard her say softly " I might as well laugh,Ive cried all the tears I can". I felt so bad for her.

2 corinthians 12:8-10 "For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.10Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

romans 8:18 "
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us."

romans 8:31-39 "
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Ok I've got some for your friend, thanks for passing them on:

- the blind healed, Matthew 9:27-31, 15-30; Mark 8:22-26; John 9
- Saul struck blind, Acts 9: 8 - 9
- spiritually blind, Matthew 23: 16 - 26; John 9:35-41; 2 Peter 1:5 - 9

Remember the most important thing you can do is show her God's love through you.

Reading about her comment about crying, made me think of Revelation 7:17 "For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes." That's for future.

Psalm 56:8 for now "Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?"
It is kind of amazing, that He writes down everytime we cry, maybe He is keeping a tally of our tears, and He will exchange each one for something marvelous in Heaven. He is marking them down for some reason. "Today at 4:35, my child cried 2624 tears. I have put them in my bottle, and have written them down."

I'll pray for her.

Hi Kayla,

Wow, I so feel for your friend. What a tragedy!!!

That's great news that her husband got saved. \o/ Praising the Lord that he's accepted the the truth of the Gospel!

I feel her agony. Sometimes you feel useless when you become disabled to some extend. For her it's so debilitating because her eyesight is gone.

When I first had fibromyalgia 38 years ago I would go to church and be prayed for. And for quite some time.

But after a while, I stopped asking for prayer. I felt like Paul when the Lord said His grace was sufficient.

I don't know if this is what she's going through, but what I have experienced in church is that well meaning folks keep asking about your sickness or disease and then it becomes your identity.

I loved them and loved them for their concern, but after a while you the person disappears and all they ask about is how your feeling. Maybe that doesn't bother others, but it did me.

Since you're her friend, maybe you could go and visit with her and let her talk about what ever is on her heart. Sometimes to just allow someone to talk and get things off of their chest is helpful. You could also ask in what way you could be of help. That might encourage her.

I wish I could give her a hug. :)

These have helped me during my struggles.

Lamentations 3:22-26
The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,

For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I have hope in Him.”
The Lord is good to those who wait for Him,
To the person who seeks Him.
It is good that he waits silently
For the salvation of the Lord.

Psalm 121
I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to slip;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not smite you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time forth and forever.

Psalm 42
As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So my soul pants for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God;
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food day and night,
While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
These things I remember and I pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go along with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him
For the help of His presence.
O my God, my soul is in despair within me;
Therefore I remember You from the land of the Jordan
And the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime;
And His song will be with me in the night,
A prayer to the God of my life.
I will say to God my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me,
While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

Hi Kayla,

How about having a chat with the pastor and asking him to tactfully let everyone know that she's been through so much and that it's all too much for her right now. :) Maybe they can wait for her to reach out and ask for prayer and give her some space.

I know they mean well, but I'm sure they all want her to feel safe, loved and cared for even if that means holding off on the prayers until she's ready.

This is not a biblical reference, but considering that she regained some of her eyesight and lost it again, have they considered using supplements for the eyes? If not, you might recommend some supplement formulas with multiple eye help ingredients. I use one myself with 13 different ingredients like Eyebright, Zeaxanthin, Lutein, Grape seed extract, etc. I had high ocular pressure, but it is normal now, so that's why I take it.

They can find eye supplements online or in healthfood stores. A couple of online suppliers are Swanson Vitamins and Puritan.

I guess I look for cures. James 5:13-16 tells how to heal biblically.13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Isaiah 54:8-10, 14-17
In a little anger I hid my face from you for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on you, says the LORD thy Redeemer....for this is as the waters of Noah unto Me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be angry with you, or rebuke you....for the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, says the LORD that has mercy on you....in righteousness shall you be established: you shall be far from oppression; for you shall not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near you....look, they shall surely gather together, but not by Me: whosoever shall gather together against you shall fall for your sake....no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you, in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of Me, says the LORD.

Revelation 3:8
Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.

Matthew 11:28-30
Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest....take my yoke (obligation to serve, and walk with God) upon you, and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest unto your souls....for My yoke is easy (gracious and kind), and My burden (service) is light (the Glory of God, the Holy Spirit, the anointing).

Isaiah 41:10,11
Fear not; for I am with you: be not dismayed; for I am your God: I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness....Behold (Look!), all they that were incensed against you shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with you shall perish.

1 Thessalonians 5:23
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 4:9-11
There remains therefore a rest to the people of God....for he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His....let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Joshua 1:8-9
This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success....Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be discouraged: for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Psalm 91:

Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;

I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

He will call on me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

-----

On the other hand, there are many verses in the Bible and what is given by God to one individual is not the same what is given to another one. So it will be the best if she prays for the verses and find it alone.

Someone before death will not cherish in the verses about health and long life, somebody having a common flue will not cherish in the verses about life after death etc. Its individual, if you understand me. She should find it from God herself.

Thank you for those thoughts sister, so touching, shed a few tears of my own. Thank you for the reminder that He counts our tears. There was a song years ago called "Tears are a Language God Understands" Sometimes its hard to remember God is God in the valley as well as on the mountain.
