The bible states that the tongue is small member but it causes great harm.

James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of inquity, so is the tongue among our membes, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell.

The words we say can affect others. Words are like a bullet out of a gun. Once discharged they cannot be retrieved.
Gossip is destructive and so often this dangerous habit is not taken for the evil that it really is.

Before we say things about people ask these questions:

(a) Is It True
(b) Is it edifying
(c) What will be gained by repeating the statement.

When we really love others we will refrain our tongues from speaking evil. With the Holy Spirit dwelling within us we can overcome this dreadful habit.

Sin will take you farther than you want to go. Sin will leave you longer than you want to stay. Sin will cost you far more than you want to pay

From my experience I would say that if your words will not benefit the other person but rather cause harm it is best to not say anything at all. I agree completely with what you have said.

We must remember that it's not about edifying the person it's about, but edifying others who listen to the individual's lies.

Protection is a part of edification.:)
