Just like when Paul was called up to the third heaven.

the ONLY reason Paul even mentions this to the BODY is because there were false apostles professing their many signs and gifts and were saying what does Paul have to show his authority.

So in embarrassment, Because he didn't want to resort to boasting in anything but THE LORD, he had to speak about himself as if to validate himself before those who were so enamored by their many wondrous manifestations of what they assumed to be from THE HOLY SPIRIT...

The benefits of speaking in tongues?
If no one can interpret what is being said?

What is the benefit of speaking in tongues?

GOD's WORK is to bring all to the knowledge of HIS SON.
How is speaking in tongues, if no one can interpret what is being said, lead unbelievers to the knowledge of CHRIST JESUS?

CSI,
By your post, you are encouraging the speaking in tongues, but are kind of distorting Paul's clear understanding of the speaking in tongues and his directive that if they are unintelligible sound and not accompanied with someone able to interpret these unintelligible sounds, than for the sake of order in the BODY, there is no need to speak in tongues.

GOD is NOT the author of confusion and speaking in tongues, without prophecy....

What is the point?

Please tell me how it edifies the BODY?
thank you but it is CS1 not I :) I am not encouraging speaking in tongues 1cor chapter 12,13, and 14 are . I posted the verses which state that. In your post to me, I see know Biblical ref, I say that respectfully.

1cor 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Right here tell me it is encouraged

I disagree that in reading 1 Corinthians 12 through 14 in full context that one will come away inderstanding that Paul was encouraging the speaking of tongues without one being able to interpret what was being said

If you have to pray for a coming revival, you are not praying attention. People are revival not a coming attraction. God has already moved over 2,000 years ago in the Garden, he is not about to move, you are his move.

Stop being so super spiritual and get in the game.

Threads like this are what really make me sick. You claim to have superior results in your walk because of tongues, yet Paul said it was the least of the gifts.

These things are valid, but your way of handling them cause division and not unity. Come to full age already.

What we are heading for is being One with God...living, moving, having our very being in Him. Tongues are the help to get there...but awakening comes from the prayer of Jesus to His body...move with me.

How could you speak in anything but a tongue? It does not say an unknown tongue or an unknowable tongue.

The phrase forbid not to speak with tongues is promoting what kind of tongues?

The benefits of Holy Spirit is for the common good. They are for us...but they are mystical because God is mystical...which is a supernatural God.

Spirit. You all are just afraid of the things that go bump in the night.

This is not God...it is just imaginations. Cast them down and experience life in the Spirit.

I would like to add to Chapter 14 the verses which you passed over: 6-11:

6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
(what's the point if I speak in tongues if I don't speak in addition to this tongue the revelation, the knowledge, or something that can be understood from the tongue, which if it can not be understood is unintelligible, like an unknown sound)

7And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?8For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 10There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.11Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
verses 13-19:

13Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14For if I pray in an unknowntongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 17For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue

verses 21-35

In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. 22Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 23If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that areunlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? 24But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commandedto be under obedience, as also saith the law. 35And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church

And you overlooked greatly the recap of what Paul was saying when he said in verse 39 Wherefore brethren...COVET...to PROPHECY...

Meaning if one is going to speak in tongues, what is the point if it is an unintelligible sound. If it is, keep silent...
I did not pass over it I studied it in depth nothing in the verses you suggest I passed over say NOT to speak in tongues. The word "unintelligible sound"? that is not the context of the verses you used. you have changed the meaning of verse and you do not see the word Except " I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?"
the prophesying, the tongues , and the doctrine(TEACHING ) ALL SHOULD DO WHAT ? Edify . comfort , and exhort .

As
continue through the verses you provided nothing says tongues are not to be spoken or not to speak in tongues . it is saying used the gifts all of them with maturity, self control , and with the intention to edify comfort AND love. not to self boast or be prideful. did you see this verse ?
"13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret"
it does not say do not speak in tongues or do not speak in an "unintelligible," way.

:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

:15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

:16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

:17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

when reading a chapter you cannot stop at one verse like here in 19 if you do then of course one could just say Paul said do not speak in tongues but he did not say that .

:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

:21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

The point is The Lord has provided Prophecy , tongues , and preaching yet they still will not hear the word of the Lord. Does that mean not to preach , prophesying ( speaking under the inspiration ) speak in tongues? no. this is clear in verse 22

:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

wow two separate gifts of the Holy Spirit with benefit and blessing to believers and unbelievers. clearly Paul is not saying do not speak in tongues or why would he continue in providing more insight to the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

the Gifts of the Holy Spirit will always be seen by human reasoning as mad, drunkenness , and what ever the world wants to call it , Christians are seen as Homophobes , intolerant , etc... Jesus said they would hate us . it is funny some in the Church have an issue with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit but not with gay marriage.

So I have not overlooked I have read each chapter in depth and Paul in 1cor chapter 12,13, and 14 no where does he say not to speak in tongues

as I believe
Chapter 12 = instruction and what the gifts are and who they are for.
Chapter 13 = the motivation of the gifts by the one using them has to be love and the betterment of all
chapter 14= addresses , corrects , and gifts used in maturity, and in well order and discipline.

my friend as you know the Greek and Hebrew and the context of this super natural event recorded in the Book of acts , and 1 Corinthians 12, 13, and 14 the word Tongues means 1. languages or 2. the organ in the mouth which is used to speak a language . Due to the scripture saying this; one is a work of the Holy Spirit as the chapters in 1cor 12, 13, and 14 ." forbid not " in context to chapter 14 is the gift known as tongues because that is the context of the chapter "gifts of the Holy Spirit. I do not know what tongue it is because chapter 14 does not tell us that is why an interpretation would be needed or that person would have to be told to be silent as the chapter instructs . They would be out of order.

Can you expound a little more on chapter 14?
wspecially in regards to instruments that make unintelligible sounds

the context of one playing an instrument and not knowing how to use it. speaks to the Gifts of the Holy Spirit used in correctly which is I think the # 1 argument with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit . I agree .

every gifts is abused today that God has not done away with.

1. pastors
2.teachers
3.evangelist
4. gifts of the Spirit
5. the word of God
etc...
But none of the above are done away with are they? oops only tongues because human reasoning don't like it .
the first three on the list have done more to hurt people with those gifts then any other and even with the abusive of them God still is calling, equipment and using men and women in all THE gifts OF THE Holy SPIRIT

Wow!! Well said.

The phenomenon of supernatural speaking in tongues is well documented in scripture. With the exception of 1st Corinthians 13:8 there are no examples of its ending but lets put that to the side.

The existence of the modern day miraculous is not nor can not be an issue simply of biblical debate. Claims of abilities or events of the supernatural are either real or bogus, they cannot be both. Either the person has the ability or gift to speak in unknown languages or interpret them or not. If the person making such claims can proof such abilities, God should be praised. But if the opposite is true that person must be held accountable for their actions. Claims of supernatural events coming from God are never to be ignored. If allowed to go unchallenged the Holy Spirit is mocked as well as the church in the eyes of unbelievers.

To praise or acknowledge claims of physical supernatural acts of the Holy Spirit without proof is counterproductive to the cause of Christ.

I respect your opinion but your understanding of 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

has Knowledge vanished away ? no you see you think that verse 8 stops there. if verse 8 was the last verse of the paragraph you would have something but the context is not complete sorry it is not.

Verse 9
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

Verse 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. some think this means the bible yet those same people attack the bible as have been changed or add or taken away Paul clearly did not mean "Perfect is come" to be the Bible FYI he had the Law already which we know IS Perfect already as the Word tell us in Ps

Ps 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

what is this Perfect to come ? that will do away with all the gifts at least two Prophecies and tongues ?

it is very possible the PERFECT is Christ and when HE returns . Also it can mean maturity of completion of the person but all of those have yet happen and Paul continues and ends with

14:39
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

just to be far the next Chapter 15 verse 1 states

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
clearly the topic of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and grammatical, contextual meaning of 12, 13, and 14 have ceased and 15 has moved on to more instruction, exhortation.

Two very important points I think can be made.

A part form the word of God no personal experience is authoritative over what is the Word of God.

One’s personal experience does not change for or against “the Gifts of the Holy “no matter how good or how bad the experience is.

The word of God provides enough within the context of chapters 12, 13, 14 for 1 Corinthians and the book of Acts to help each one in discerning the gifts being used by a person or in an church setting is or is not of God.

No denomination, or human reasoning, or personal experience changes that.

If you say the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for today and tongues is babble OR GIBBERISH based on your own human reasoning or understanding that is error.

Nowhere does it say in the word of God the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for today because the Bible was completed. Nor does your bad experience OR GOOD ONE authenticate the Gifts. The word of God does and the action in line with Gods word.

In chapter’s 12, 13, 14 provide many key things to help one who is seeking the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I think I would like to high light some.

Chapter 12:

:1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
If the gifts were to be done away with, why teach them to the church of Corinthians?
:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
This verse tell us as Paul teaches under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit “I give you understanding” which is The Spirit gave to me this understanding so now I give it to you.

:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
The NOW in verse 4 is to mean as I have given understand to you in verse 3 , let us move onto the subject of Gifts of the Holy Spirit . Which they are not for today so I will use two more chapter to say that. Oops sorry that not what was said.
:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
Chapter 12 provides some very good understanding that these are Gifts for the Holy Spirit, they are many different kinds, and they are for the Body of Christ past, present, and future.

Chapter 13

:1 If I speak in the tongues[fn] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
This is the more excellent way : which is the gifts of the Holy Spirit are to be used in LOVE.
:2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
Notice that even the more excellent gift of prophecy is nothing without love.
:3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[fn] but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Notice even chapter 13 say to those who give to the poor without love you are nothing

:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Love is the motivation in which the gifts are to be used and even with those works of giving to the poor etc… do them without love it means nothing.

Chapter 14
:1 Follow after love, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
Or the gifts follow the actions of love which produce a godly desire to want the gift and prophesy is what I want you to do too or also.

:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Human reasoning or the lack of understanding of what the language is saying is Irrelevant when one is speaking in tongues .
:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Both gifts do good.
:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
The greater spoken is in the effectiveness for the whole body not that tongues is not a good gift The Holy Spirit is the one still giving the gifts. As the latter statement “except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying”. Prophecy and tongues & interpretation both edify .
:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
Is love still the motivation and reason for the gift you are using? What is the end result? It should be Edification, comfort, and exhortation .

:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
:36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
This gift was not for you as to boast but to bless others

:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

What thing? The understanding of the gifts of the Holy Spirit all of them And WHO THEY ARE FOR and how they are to be used.

:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

Nothing any of the chapters say the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for today or have gone away. Nothing in the three chapter suggest human experience replaces the Word of God.
Nothing in the Greek or Hebrew translations within context to 1cor chp 12, 13, 14 say tongues /unknown tongues is babble or gibberish. That is ignorance and immaturity and one should leave them alone. One who says you have to speak in tongues to be saved is in error and unlearned. This issues one has with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit which tongues is a gift and attacks and makes profane comments should have more respect when speaking about any gift given by the Holy Spirit.

just posting it again to ensure

Threads like this are what really make me sick.
So, will you be going to the doctor trusting the ability of the flesh and the wisdom of blind mankind for yo healing... or will you be going to the Lord based on what He has already done and promised???

Just curious sine you are saying you are sick

You claim to have superior results in your walk because of tongues
No, nobody is saying that... we are saying it is something very valuable that the Lord has made available to each person.

If it weren't, then the Lord would not have made it available.

Some folks want all the Lord has for them and other folks wanna play tiddly winks

Nothing in the three chapter suggest human experience replaces the Word of God
Man, I wish the charismatics would learn this... it would sure prevent a lot of false doctrine!

we're really not here to serve ourselves but to serve others
Yes, and if we cannot encourage ourselves in the Lord to grow and walk closer to Him... we won't be helping anybody

I've seen and have heard of "purpose driven" people working so hard to bless others that they really have no personal relationship with the Lord themselves and end up basically shipwrecked and fall away.

read it again and continue to verse 13

except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine

13.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. why ? so the revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by Doctrine . the gifts can produce each of these in the context of the speaking or verbal gifts .

Prophesying is a gift = speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit preaching, teaching
different then tongues

tongues = speaking under the inspiration for the edification of the believer(self)
tongues with interpretation = prophesying which is to be judged by those who hear it as it states

verse 26
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
