I have a friend who is extrememly involved in the debate between the whole "once saved, always saved" thing. I'm just curious as to what some of you think. I'm sort of caught in between so I won't give my opinion at this time because it is a real blurry topic for me!! One thing that gets me is that the people who support OSAS, say that if someone becomes a Christian, then slips up and falls back to bad habits and starts following the world again, they say that that person was never truly a Christian in the first place. I'm not sure I agree with that, but it's hard because I've found bible verses that sort of support that idea. It's tricky.

So? what do you guys think about "once saved always saved."

There is already a discussion of this going on at the moment, so I'm not sure how many responses you'll get.

But a quick list of verses that I would say support the idea that those who are truly saved will endure to the end are the following:

Luke 3:8–9
Romans 8:29–30
1 Corinthians 1:7–9
Philippians 1:6
1 Thessalonians 5:23–24
Hebrews 3:6
Hebrews 10:36–39

I think the following verses indicate that persons who are saved, or begin the process of salvation, are "eternally secure":

John 6:36–40
Romans 8:34
1 Corinthians 1:7–9
2 Thessalonians 3:3
Hebrews 7:25

But this doesn't mean you can say to yourself "I said a prayer once" or "I walked down the isle, therefore I'm saved" and live a life of sin. A true faith is a persevering faith:

Luke 3:8–9
John 15:6
Romans 8:13
1 Corinthians 10:12
1 Corinthians 15:1–2
Galatians 5:6
Galatians 5:19–24
James 2:14–26
2 Peter 1:5–10
1 John 4:3–10

There is some redundancy in the verses as the concepts overlap.

We’ve got two OSAS threads going at once. I don’t believe in “once saved, always saved.”

Jesus said not everybody that calls Him Lord,Lord, will make it to heaven, but those that did the will of the Father.Jesus said there will be many people at the judgment that will say they lived for Jesus, but they will not make it to heaven.
These people confessed Christ as their savior, until they died, and still could not make it to heaven,so it shows you there is more to it than confessing Christ alone.
The reason they did not make it is because they did not abstain from sin, even though they confessed Christ as their savior.

But people who believe once saved always saved do not put too much emphasis on their lifestyle, and will fall short of making it to heaven.
I have seen people who believe once saved always saved, live like the world.
It is a dangerous doctrine to believe that you cannot fall from grace, because some people do not put too much emphasis on their lifestyle thinking that they are alright because they cannot fall.
The Bible says anybody that thinks they stand, take heed, lest they fall. The once saved always saved people think they stand, but they should take care lest they fall.
The Bible says that we are to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.
That means salvation is a working process,so how can it be once saved always saved,if you have to work at your salvation after confessing Christ.
Some people confess Christ and then never work it out,and will not make it to heaven, even if they confessed Christ until they died.

The truth of making it to heaven is to be led of the Spirit and act like Jesus, abstaining from all sin, which is the will of the Father, and the Bible says a Spirit led life will not sin,and if you are born of God you cannot sin.
Once saved always saved people do not stress this.

How can they say a person was not truly a Christian if they go back to the world, when it is once saved always saved, then how did they fall, and how do they know that they are not in the same boat as them.
If a person confesses Christ as their savior, and then goes back to the world, how do they know that they are any different than them that went back to the world, when it is once saved always saved.

The Bible says that someone who is saved can fall back to the world, and Paul said that if he did not keep under his body, which is to abstain from sin,he would be a castaway.

Matt

This is a good example of how the Arminian doctrine that you can lose your salvation can easily lead to a works-based righteousness. If we are good enough, we get to heaven.

I said we have two “once saved, always saved” threads going. Actually, I think it’s three, isn’t it?

Don't turn your back on God. We can fall many times and God will forgive us. If you denie God he will denie you.
