Being content with the things you have. When I was growing up, I was VERY covetous. Nowadays, I just look at things and know they are just things and they don't rewlly matter. When you die, you leave it all here. I heard a story about one of the Rockefellers and the family gathered to ask the lawyer how much the dead Rockefeller left and the lawyer said "he left it all".

I'm not saying I don't struggle with other things, and put a jewelry catalogue in front of me and I'll covet for a while. But knowing you never really own anything here is helpful to me.

1Co 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

1Co 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

See we can covet if we want to covet, and they say it is a sin.:)

It is not sin to covet the right things---we must be 'discerning - put difference between right and wrong - between holy and unholy .Lev 10v10.

try and be content with what you have been given, whether great or small, gain or loss,
for this is a true test of our Love and Faith and Appreciation to our Maker -

covetousness is just another form of 'idolatry', particularly the 'idols of the heart',
and we all know what this entails, and this will surely lead us 'away from Jesus'...
it is a 'battle', and oh yes, it will take some serious 'work',
but Christ has made it possible for us to be victorious over-comers, after conversion...

1Ti 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

Contentment in Christ and that He has supplied all our needs. Thankfulness for what you have not desire for what you want.

For the cause of Christ

That is why I put a smiley face at the end of the post, for I was making a joke, and we can covet after the right things, and the Bible says to covet those things so surely I would know it is alright.

But then again I did not have good discernment when making the joke for I should of not put a smiley face there, but I should of put lol instead, lol.

Megiddo beat me to it!

Gratitude! Stop looking at others, and look at Jesus!

"looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:2

How do we overcome coveting?
Hi Cherie,

When I was first born again during one of the pastors sermons he told us to not give away our rag clothes to Salvation Army and Good Will and places like that. As Christians we should give as if we're giving to Jesus. So he told us to give away a piece of clothing that's in great shape and is our favorite things to wear.

That act did something to me. It helped me to hold things loosely. It doesn't mean that I've never coveted anything since. It can be something that sneaks up on you and you don't even realize you're doing it at first.

Reading about the battle of Ai was another helpful teaching about what coveting does. It kills and destroys and harms others, especially loved ones.

In the past when I've had a sin issue that I couldn't seem to overcome, I made it a point to pray about it everyday and seriously meaning every word in the prayer. I wanted deliverance more than I wanted to sin.

In this case you need to want deliverance from coveting more than you want to covet. I also had the thought of how God hates sin and how much I wanted to obey to please Him. And knowing that He's given us everything for life and Godliness was powerful to know I could stop the sin with His help. It was like those words cheered me on to victory. :)

So if you try to do this you'll continue to pray each day and even throughout the day when the thought comes to you and you'll keep at it until you overcome. For one sin in my life it took a couple of months. Another time something else took about 3 months. Depending on what it is and how much a hold it has on you will probably determine how long it may take to overcome.

But I always see God break whatever it is that I'm praying about. The power to sin is deflated and the power of the Spirit within me helps me to overcome. God's desire is that I stop the sin and He's given me every tool I need to help me.

Be encouraged that God is with you and it's by His power and might that you'll gain victory. His grace is sufficient to help us live Godly.

Another thing I do that helps greatly is to take my thoughts captive and make them obedient to God's word. I take thoughts captive by thinking or saying out loud, what does God say about this. This temptation that's come my way can bombard my mind. If we loose the battle with the thought going through our mind we'll end up giving in.

We are tempted by the lust for something ........with our flesh and with our eyes and then we struggle with the pride of life, the keeping up with the Joneses or one-upping them. The battle immediately hits our minds, our thoughts. What are we going to do? Are we going to give in? At times I've yelled out, "God help me." That's all I could do. And He came and helped me not give in to the temptation.

This is how we live. We live in a battlefield, we're at war with self, with the devil and with the world. But we can take heart, Jesus has overcome and because we're in Him, we can overcome as well! Greater in Jesus in us, than the devil who's the prince of the power of this world. We truly are overcomers in Christ and you can overcome coveting.

How do we overcome coveting?
Have you been able to overcome any sin on your own? I wasn't able to do so before Christ, and stopped expecting that to change on my own after. (Not that I didn't try -- often -- just never could.) He gives us everything we need, including overcoming ability. So, take it to him. He's our changer.

Covet means simply want more..covetness means to want more all the time. What do we want? Not to be confused with need , we want what as see . So Idolatry becomes a issue which is one of the sins God gets angry about..the Brothers are good to tell you to pray (bow down to the will of God) take hold (firmly grasp, understanding,) of God's commandments.

Psalms 23 always comes to my mind .. The Lord is my Shepherd , I shall not want .also it is good to see what is being coveted , keeping things in context . I have to deal with covetness alot . I know we all do because we have eyes . It's good to confess our weakness before God and believers that we may be edified (corrected)

I have thought of Psalm 23:1 too. The LORD is my shepherd I lack nothing( or I shall not want). I have a coloring pg of that verse for myself that I colored and relate to. I notice that I am happier when I buy stuff for others than for myself. Sometimes I have felt guilty even for buying things for myself. I believe things should be done in moderation. I suppose just buying things for others can become to much if it becomes a shopping addiction.
