• In the beginning was the word (Jesus) and the word was with God(holy spirit, searches out all things not to just know but understanding also) and the word was God(the Father) I've never heard anyone link the Trinity to the beginning of John 1:1 SO I wonder if anyone knows of anything about this. The verse continues on and also say and in Him was life and it was the light men..what is John talking about? The apostles had" The Teacher ", Our Lord Jesus evidently had been teaching them a important truth. Was the light of men the Elect ?

I interpret "light" in that context as being God's TRUTH. Or, if you will, God's truth, wisdom and love in equal balance.

Hi Dade,

John 1:1-13

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Light is Jesus.

John the Baptist came as a witness and testified about the Light (Jesus).

The light of men is the mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

John 8.12-Jesus talking here-

[SUP]12 [/SUP]Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
One thing we must remember is that the people in the OT and NT never had a complete bible, so the reference to the "word" in the New Testament is referring to Jesus and even in this verse.

The word of God is also the teaching that salvation is through Jesus alone. In this case "doers of the word" can mean, IMHO, doers of the gospel.

Yeah, and that also reminds me of the parable about the eye being single...If we have our eyes upon Jesus then we are full of light and can see clearly to do his will.

Matthew 6
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

I can tell you that it is a biiigg stretch to try to shoehorn the Holy Spirit into John 1:1!
We can know unequivocally that the Word is Jesus - because the connection is made for us a few verses down, John 1:14-16 - but surely if John specifically meant to include the Holy Spirit, he would have just said it!

There is no need to complicate anything here - just read it for what it is!

Also surely verse 4 is self-explanatory in explaining who or what the light of men is:

4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:4

There is a progression of only two linked comparisons here...

John 1.1 affirms two very essential things. Foremost, notice that the text speaks of the Word existing “with” God. The term used here for “with” is the Greek word πρὸς (pros), which, when followed by a noun the accusative case, speaks of face-to-face communion, interaction. One does not need to leave the first chapter of John to find examples in which πρὸς signifies a person near or moving towards another person (e.g., 1.29, 42, 47). Of course, this comports well with John 17.5, where Jesus speaks of His pre-existence with the Father. John 1.1 is speaking of two persons.

Finally, we come to “the Word was God.” The term “God” here carries with it a qualitative nuance (i.e., “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath” vs. “For the Son of Man is the/a Lord of the Sabbath”). Take John 3.6 for example,

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

The idea here has absolutely nothing to do with identification of any sort (“the spirit,” “a spirit”), but everything to do with that of predication. More specifically, the nouns (“flesh,” “spirit”) here function in a purely qualitative sense, without a definite or indefinite semantic force. The context of the passage in view is about the inherent nature of sinful flesh (John 3.6a) in contrast to the new nature of man in the process of regeneration (John 3.6b).

That said, the Trinitarian position on John 1.1 is that the text is teaching the equality between the Father, and the Son... that all the qualities, attributes, and nature of God – everything that makes God, God – the Word also possesses. This is why the Greek term for “God” here is anarthrous.

Further, John 1.3 presupposes the eternality of Jesus,

“All things were made through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” (John 1.3)

Hone in on the second part of the passage, “apart from Him nothing has come into being that has come into being.” Christ is being described as the One through whom all things which have “come into being” have their place in existence. Everything that was created; everything that had a starting point in time; everything that has come into existence… all things that “came into being” did so through, or by means of the Word. These are not words that describe a created being, these are words that describe an active, and eternal agent of creation. The Logos is not here identified as one that “came into being,” but the One through whom all things that have “come into being” have their existence. Meaning, if Jesus is created, and Jesus is the One through whom all things that have “come into being” have their existence, then Jesus created Himself.

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

God had the plan to come in the future in flesh in the beginning, and that plan was with Him in the beginning before He laid down the foundation of the world, and that plan was God manifest in flesh.

The Bible is God revealing Himself by words written in a book.

The Word of God is God revealing Himself personally by manifesting Himself in flesh.

The Word is God manifest in the flesh,so it includes the man Christ Jesus,so this was a plan in the beginning, but came to reality when Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

All things were made with the plan of God to come in flesh, and without the plan of God coming in flesh,God would of not created anything He created, for Jesus is the reason creation is successful.

Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Joh 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
Joh 1:7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
Joh 1:8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
Joh 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Every person has the chance to be able to see the light of Jesus, the truth, salvation, and the darkness does not comprehend it,which means no matter how lost a person is they can find the light of Jesus, and be saved.

They say God chooses who will be saved, but Jesus lights every person that is born in to this world, and the Spirit and bride say, anybody can have that salvation.

Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Joh 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

This does not prove a trinity, but that God had the plan in the beginning to come in the flesh, and then it became reality when the conception happened in the womb of Mary.

The Word of God is God revealing Himself to mankind by appearing in flesh.
