I've often heard it said that all sins are equal in God's eyes. Where does this idea come from?

They are equal in the sense that ANY sin separates one from God and brings death.

In other contexts one sin may not be regarded as equal with another sin.

I think we get far too hooked-up on individual "sins", as opposed to making sure to eliminate an atmosphere of sin in our lives.

The effect is the same in God's eyes as sin alienates you from God. The human impact is different however as some sin is more devastating in the harm cause than other sins.

No because there is 1 sin that God won't forgive.

Matthew 12:32
And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

All the works of the flesh will bring destruction of some sort in our lives from living the homosexual lifestyle to the deceitfulness and the slandering of others in the body of Christ.

They are all in the same lists as outbursts of anger, jealousy..etc.

All of the works of the flesh will not bring our inheritance of the life that is ours in Christ while we are in this earth. We have the kingdom of God within us - in our new creation in Christ.

Christ left us His peace but if we try to live by the flesh and try to find life by our own doing - then we will not experience this inheritance that is ours in Christ. We will worry and thus in our un-renewed minds fail to experience the life of Christ that is ours now.

I believe some behaviors will bring more harm to others in this life but the reality is - all the works of the flesh bring death with them. They are contrary to the life of God.

Some times this "death" comes quicker by certain behaviors than others. Take up shooting heroin in your arms and you will experience this destruction very quickly.

It is a misunderstanding of a verse in James:

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. -James 2:10

While it is true that God is offended by all sins, that doesn't imply that He is equally offended by all sins.

If all sins were equal, then all Christians should be adamant that the legal system give equal punishments for all offenses.

Hi Marcelo,

Equal in that all have sinned and fall short of God's glory. Equal in that there's none righteous, no not one.

Different however in the different types of punishment for sin.

Jesus made it sound like there might be lesser punishments in hell.

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. Luke 10:13-14

I wonder where the idea comes from from, also, especially since Jesus made fairly plain the fact that there are greater sins than others when He was being questioned by Pilate in John 19:11.

Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”

All sins are not equal for some sins are worse than other sins,in how it impacts the sinner, and the one sinned against, but when it comes to judgement, all sin is unrighteousness.

I dont think they are all equal. i think the detestable sins are much worse and are at the root of many of the words problems.IMO they do far more damage to the sinner in separating them from the Most High and leading to more sin.

Proverbs 6:16-19

16
There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
17
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
19
a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

Since the LORD did not give us his Word not to condemn us, then it is no sweat off his back parts if we don't do the things he says.

The LORD didn't tell Adam not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil because it would kill him, And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Gen 2:9 In fact, it is written, "And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:" Gen 2:16

The LORD said not to eat from the tree of knowledge because the fruit is the law that his days in the flesh are 120 years. And as written in Genesis 2:17, ".... for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." So if man was condemned to death then feel free to explain why it is written in Gen 3:22, "...and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:" As written in Genesis 6:3, the LORD did not give his Word to condemn us.

If something seemingly insignificant, like stealing someone's pencil, was sin enough to require the torture and death of Christ, then anything else we would consider to be a worse sin would have the same consequence- because the consequence can't get any worse.

That is concerning the punishment for sins. But yes of course- I would much rather have someone steal my pencil than murder me. I'm sure even Christ would rather someone steal His shoes than torture Him to death.

The Bible says that in the last days there will be hardships like never before, and never to be equaled again. This shows that God understands that there are some things that are much worse than other things. But even one sin, no matter how seemingly insignificant, will keep you out of heaven forever, or require Christ's blood.

But God doesn't want us to think along those lines, thinking things like "At least I don't sin as bad as that other person." He detests such thinking, cause you sinned enough to send Jesus to the cross. He wants you to take every sin seriously, because even one 'little' sin requires the extreme torture and death of His precious Son!

"If you sin willfully there no longer remains a sacrifice for your sins."

Do not attempt to take atvantage of Christ's blood, thinking "Christ paid for it anyways, I might as well enjoy it." Those who use Christ's blood as a license to sin will not be covered!!!

Some people get mad at GOD and might say something bad but a person that has totally rejected GOD In their heart would not care AT all.
So then that's unforgivable because that person has rejected GOD In their heart and not just temporarily.

This verse confuses me.
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of Lord Jesus, so too the spirit of truth, and God is love. So I take it to mean someone who blasphemes against love, not only would they be bearing false witness but they would be puffed up and disrespectful to God.

Some people get mad at GOD and might say something bad but a person that has totally rejected GOD In their heart would not care AT all.
So then that's unforgivable because that person has rejected GOD In their heart and not just temporarily.
But the verse doesn't say reject, it says "speak against" the Holy Spirit. I haven't rejected God and the unclean spirits that are temporarily allowed to influence the world would do anything to get me to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit.

I think Jesus said that if you break one law, you are guilty of breaking the entire law. I think he also said that all sin leads to death. One might interpret this to mean that all sins are equal.

I wouldn't agree with that interpretation. I think the Lord wanted us to understand that all the commandments are important. Even jaywalking can get you killed. Still, I don't equate jaywalking with murder.

well.....there are different levels of punishment prescribed for sin under the law.....yet Jesus said if you break one of the least you are guilty of the whole......some may be more grievous in a sense yet sin is sin is sin.....unfortunately humanity and religion have compartmentalized and quantified sins into nice neat little boxes.....usually by those who believe one can lose salvation by committing sins in box "a" while committing sins in box "b" equates to messing up or slipping up.....the good news.....JESUS paid for the sins of the WHOLE WORLD and to a 1st Century Koine Greek speaking believer or a ROMAN the words IT IS FINISHED was completely understood to mean PAID IN FULL...sin is not the ISSUE...it has been dealt with IN CHRIST on the CROSS....the issue is BELIEF into the finished work of Christ on one's behalf.....

JESUS said..."WHEN the Spirit of TRUTH is COME he will convince/convict the WORLD of SIN, BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE NOT ON ME"

THE bolded speaks multitudes to the fact that SIN has been dealt with and the issue is BELIEF IN and ON JESUS
