    Default Can we pray Mary?

    Hello everyone,
I have a question about prayers. Can a Christian pray Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, or should we address our prayer only to God?
I'm a protestant but... I'm pretty attached to Mary, she's like a mother for Christians and I feel weird since I've stopped praying her. That's why I'm confused.

    Thanks for your attention ^-^

She cannot hear you, because she is not omnipresent.

She cannot help you, because she is not omnipotent.

So... why to pray to her?

    Only God answers prayers.

We are told not to communicate with the dead.

Pray to God (or Jesus , since He is God)

Your weird feeling can be just because you were used to it.

    Time will solve it.

Do, what is biblical. Not what you "feel good"...

    Exodus 20:3-5

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

    or

Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

    or
    matthew 6 - 9

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thanks a lot for your messages, I'm less confused now.
Since I'm a children, I learnt at school and with my parents to pray Mary. It's difficult to abandon our habits but as Trofimus said, we should follow the Bible not our feelings.

Very few women are able to say/admit this, so I appreciate your wisdom very much.

    Hi Irisu,
Yes, a Christian can ask the Blessed Mother to pray for them. One may say that she died and can hear us no more but I would argue, from the Bible, that that is not true. Scripture states that God "is the God of the living and not of the dead." It further states, "Oh death where is your victory, oh death where is your sting." Whether we are in Heaven or on Earth we are still part of the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church. Just as we ask others, here on earth, to pray for us then it is legitimate to ask our brothers and sisters in Heaven to pray for us.

    Blessings.

Do you know what the Bible calles those "habits?" Traditions of Men.

    Hello Irisu,

Scripture is clear in that we should pray to the Father in the name of His Son Jesus. He is the One who shed his blood for all believers and is the One who is sitting at the right hand of the Father making intercession for all believers.

Mary, though a blessed woman to bring our Lord into the world, was in need of a savior like the rest of us. She was not born immaculate i.e. without sin, she is not a mediator, nor is she full of grace. She cannot forgive sins. These are all Roman Catholic teachings and have no place in the word of God.

Jesus is the One who met the righteous requirements of the law on our behalf and shed his blood for us, taking upon himself the wrath that all believers deserve. Christ alone, whom the Father sent, is our salvation.

My advice to you would be to get out of the habit of praying to Mary and direct it to God in the name of Christ. Praying to Mary is a dishonor to Jesus.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control ...

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit ...

This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit ....

I don't want to 'hijack' the thread, but this sort of got me thinking - how do you account for the many Marian apparitions such as what occurred at Fatima, Portugal?

I'd be interested in serious answers - how is it accounted for?

Do you really have to ask? What better way to keep people hooked on something, than to have these thing springing up.

No, you direct your prayers to God. Mary cannot hear nor answer your prayer. So you ought to pray to God alone.

You should probably start a thread on that subject. It will take over the thread even though you're not meaning it too because people will argue over it and the OP will be forgotten. So you may want to start a thread,it could be an interesting discussion.

The Bible can not be used to confirm that Mary never died and was bodily assumed to heaven. Those are extra Biblical teachings promoted by the heretical church known as the RCC (Roman Catholic church) and in fact it is one of two ex cathedra dogmas that are mandatory for the unsuspecting, uninformed, and gullible Catholic to accept and believe as true.

In that case one could just as well pray to President Nixon
