I just realized something though. Here we are. Christians. Arguing the Gospel, debating the Gospel. But what are we supposed to be doing? Not debating the Gospel. We're supposed to be proclaiming the Gospel. Who here is doing that?

I came here to this forum and almost immediately I got sucked into this mire of disobedience too, like most of the people here. People....Please accept my apology for debating the Word. Its wrong of us and it's wrong of me to debate Gods Word. I'm sorry for that.

Maybe you've just had a conviction of your priorities as opposed to a revelation that debating God's Word is deadly wrong. Discussing God's word and reaching a consensus of the truth is a good and honorable endeavor. We ought to discuss the things of God.

Jude 1

3Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
5I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Read all of the chapter but above is some insight.

exhort.. and ... contend for the common Salvation.

We can see this las lasciviousness is rife in our day also and more.. but we must hold fast.

Hi Denadii, I was a volunteer assistant to a missionary family who lived with the Hmong mountain people in Thailand. My wife is Thai and Through our church we would all go by mini bus to present the Gospel to those willing to hear the message and then return home the same day. I say this because my wife and I are not a missionary in the traditional sense of the word. It was in a very relaxed setting in the comfort of their world and of course they were as curious about us as we were about them. So I suppose this is one example of proclaiming the Gospel. God bless

The color board is an example of how the Gospel was presented in a more tangible and understandable way.

So faith being the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, then to answer a question regarding the reason for the hope we have regarding that thing we believe is the truth must have some substance to it. If it doesn't then it really isn't faith in the truth but just a unfounded belief which isn't of faith.

Since it is written to "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." in 1 Thess 5:21, then it is usually error only, not truth that shrinks from inquiry.

Hi again Denadii, I think debating God's word can be a healthy way to grow in wisdom and understanding; when it is done in a respectful manner, good topic.

To debate the word of God in a controlled environment is healthy because not one of us have the perfect knowledge of God's word. The disciples did it and so can we.

The problem is that it escalate into arguments, name calling etc because we all have unteachable spirits. I would like to know how many people on this website argue their own believes and not what they were taught in church by a person.

What we have learned and how we learn becomes a part of who we are. It takes an act of God to change us.
Thank God He does act on our behalf.
He can take a mind that was so closed to the truth and turn the light on so it dispels the darkness. Buy reading the Bible and having the Holy Spirit work we can see the truth of Hebrews 4:12 come alive in us.... AND He does it without condemnation too!!

[SUP]12 [/SUP]For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the [SUP][a][/SUP]breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.

DISCUSS ...Yes - DEBATE...no !

I like what you said in your OP. I think what is missing in all of us is HUMILITY ! We just seem unable to hold a conversation in a humble way....why ?
I think it's because we (the meek and humble) are 'shouted down by the vociferous who think they know it all....consequently we have to reply in like manner to be heard....or just let it pass.

I am frustrated with the 'goings on' here, at the fast rate at which 'new posts sprout up like weeds and within a few hours a post is relegated to the back and beyond....as if it was never made. SOME people should be more quick to 'hear than to speak and be less 'domineering !
We are not a 'stampeding herd of cattle.

We need to discuss doctrine to see if we are in line with the Bible, as servants of the Lord we need to rightly handle the Word of God II Timothy 2:23-26 "Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.24 And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will."

Many are new Christians on here and some do not understand the Word of God, so we discuss/debate God's word so that we can learn from God's word. Evangelism will happen as the Word is being discussed for those that are not Christians, as the Word is being discussed or debated.

As we discuss the Word those that are not in line with God's Word, maybe God will grant them repentance. There are lots of doctrines that we as Christians need to discuss, so that others can understand and that we can understand those doctrines that we do not understand.

I do not believe there is anything wrong with a good discussion / debate. And, really, what better subject to discuss and hold in our minds than God's Word? However, we do have some who sink to the level of name-calling and contentiousness. When the bad behavior is brought to their attention, they rationalize it by saying they are "contending for the faith".

Do not let the poor behavior of some be projected on to yourself and do not believe their name-calling is accurate (whether it is aimed at you or someone else).

God tells us in His Word what He thinks of us and we are to hold to His truth. Hold on to who you are in Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:[SUP]9 [/SUP]God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.[SUP]10 [/SUP]Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

1 Corinthians 11:[SUP]17 [/SUP]Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.[SUP]18 [/SUP]For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.[SUP]19 [/SUP]For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

Romans 16:[SUP]17 [/SUP]Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.[SUP]18 [/SUP]For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

2 Timothy 3:[SUP]12 [/SUP]Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.[SUP] 13 [/SUP]But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.[SUP]14 [/SUP]But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;[SUP]15 [/SUP]And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.[SUP]16 [/SUP]All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:[SUP]17 [/SUP]That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Ephesians 4:[SUP]12 [/SUP]For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:[SUP]13 [/SUP]Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:[SUP]14 [/SUP]That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;[SUP]15 [/SUP]But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:[SUP]16 [/SUP]From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

2 Timothy 2:[SUP]24 [/SUP]And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,[SUP] 25 [/SUP]In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;[SUP]26 [/SUP]And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

2 Thessalonians 3:1Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:[SUP]2 [/SUP]And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.[SUP] 3 [/SUP]But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.[SUP] 4 [/SUP]And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.[SUP] 5 [/SUP]And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.[SUP]6 [/SUP]Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.[SUP]7 [/SUP]For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;..............[SUP]14 [/SUP]And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.[SUP]15 [/SUP]Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

How do you give an answer to ANYTHING if you have never questioned it, discussed it, mulled it over, explored it, so that you understand it more than you did when you first heard about it?

I think the problem is when debate becomes a tennis match. Two sides just start hitting each other with contradictory verses pulled out of context. No can learn anything in that kind of debate, and they are tedious for an audience to watch.

Discussing/debating what we believe is healthy.
Where some get off track is when they start belittling those who do not agree with them.
There are some who just cannot avoid trying to show their self proclaimed superior knowledge and understanding.

I'm guilty as the next person about adding colorful words to a debate, I apologize for that indeed, yet I'm still going to debate.

It never stopped Paul from doing it.

Acts 18:28
28For he powerfully refuted the Jews in public debate, proving by the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.

If we are using the apostles as our model, we must consider when, where, and how they debated. In certain environments they they were moved by the Holy Spirit to expound in Scripture. Many modern Christians fancy themselves as Peter in the temple, when in reality they are more like the divided church at Corinth.
