Working to determine if I can correctly identify the Gaius spoken of by John in his 3rd Epistle.......

3 John
1

1 .) The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2 .) Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
3 .) For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
4 .) I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 .) Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
6 .) Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:

Found this info:

Gaius is a name of several people in the New Testament part of the Bible.

  1. A Christian Gaius is mentioned in Macedonia as a traveling companion of Paul, along with Aristarchus (Acts 19:29).
  2. One chapter later, a Gaius from Derbe is named as one of Paul's seven traveling companions who waited for him at Troas (Acts 20:4).
  3. A Gaius is mentioned residing in Corinth as being one of only a few people there (the others being Crispus and the household of Stephanas) who were baptised by Paul, who founded the Church in that city (1 Corinthians 1:14).
  4. A Gaius is referred to in a final greeting portion of the Epistle to the Romans (Romans 16:23) as Paul's "host" and also host of the whole church, in whatever city Paul is writing from at the time. In all likelihood, this was Corinth.
  5. Lastly, Gaius of Ephesus to whom the third Epistle of John is addressed (3 John 1). He may be one of the men mentioned in any of the other contexts.

Since John Zebedee was surnamed Mark, the brother of James whom Christians scholars say was the son of was the son of Zebedee, a Galilean fisherman, and Salome. I guess I got that wrong since I considered Salome was the disciple who Jesus loved (as if he didn't love all his disciples)

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. Acts 12:12

Since being perfect before the LORD is marked as being one who does not practice deceit and lying, (See Duet 18:10)

16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Matthew 19:16-17

17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
Mark 10:17-18

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
Luke 18:18-19

While one should render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and unto God that which is Gods, I would suggest that Gaius was the rich young ruler that ran after Jesus, but I digress. (See Dueteronomy 6)

Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
Matthew 19:21

Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
Mark 10:21

Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
Luke 18:22

Thanks for the responses........

It is a bit odd that many of the people in Scripture are known, and their identity is not questioned, but there are some that remain a bit of a mystery.

Hi rehbein,

I thought this was interesting - Got questions dot org says this:

Gaius, John’s friend. The Epistle of 3 John is addressed to a man named Gaius who was a member of an unnamed church that John had the oversight of (3 John 1:1). John calls this man a “dear friend” (verses 1, 2, and 11).

Gaius is commended for his hospitality to traveling preachers of the gospel (verses 5, 6 and 8); for his faithfulness (verse 5); for his love (verse 6); and for his walking in the truth (verse 3). According to tradition this Gaius may be the one whom John appointed as bishop of Pergamum.
