I'm not a fan of Lee Strobel due to his glib style of writing. In Case for Faith I was surprised to read that his expert on Hell did not believe that Hell was literally a place of fiery torment. Is this generally accepted to be true?

Not less than a few reject the reality of hell as literal, including eternal separation into the lake of fire to be punished for all eternity........

I will get a bag of popcorn and a coke to watch this thread.....eternal does not mean eternal when applied to hell or the lake of fire according to some.....

Hell as eternal punishment makes sense if one considers that Heaven is eternal.

I liked his books.
Everything just seems already decided in his books. There's no intellectual suspense. He goes through the motions.

Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

So it is a place of fiery torment, then?

Lake of fire symbolises something - i don't see how throwing fire (hell) into a lake of it makes a lot of sense,

Maybe the lake fire is even worse.

There is more to the second death, lake of fire and the new heavens and earth than just a casual reading reveals.

First off what the new heavens and earth represent - where does John (and Jesus and Peter) get this "new heavens and earth" imagery from.

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

I mean in regard to the punishment?

2 Th 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

So if it's destruction then it can't be fire then can it?

And the context of this is the destruction of the persecuting Jews and their henchman in the 1st century AD - Only the nation of Israel was said to dwell in the presence of the Lord.

We would be in the presence of the LORD in Heaven.

It is not physical fire, but it is fire, and just as bad. "With flames of fire (hell) He will take vengeance on those who know not God, and who obey not the gospel of His Son." In Luke 16:19 you can find the story of Lazarus and the rich man, and what they experienced when they died.

Paul is not speaking of heaven - lets take a look at that link you gave:

2 Thessalonians 1:6-11New American Standard Bible (NASB)

[SUP]6 [/SUP]For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, [SUP]7 [/SUP]and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, [SUP]8 [/SUP]dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

The first thing to notice is that Paul is promising repayment with "affliction to those who afflict you" and to "give relief to YOU".

This was relief from persecution at the instigation of the Jews was promised to THEM in their own lifetime - not hundreds of years into the future.

But why wouldn't that extend to all Christians? It doesn't have much purpose otherwise.
