Default Can we overcome sin fully?

This can be a controversial question, but the answer is none the less Yes we can and indeed should.

The real question is not can we but "how" can we.

The answer is only found in Jesus and the promises of God.

Most fail on this point because they think about human weakness but we would do well to learn the lesson from Abraham:

Rom 4:19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:
    Rom 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
Rom 4:21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
Rom 4:22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

Notice that when it came down to it, Abraham did not consider his weaknesses or inability to do it. But rather was strong in faith trusting that Gods promises were true and that God would make it happen.

This lesson is for us as it is written:

    Rom 4:23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
    Rom 4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Rom 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

So stop looking at your problems and start trusting Jesus as your solution and see what happens.

Go look at all the promises God has in his word about no longer sinning then claim them because:

2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

    and:

2Co 1:19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.
2Co 1:20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

Be joyful for greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

Ask God to show you your sins and when He does don't resist but surrender it to Him and He will take it form you and you will be victorious then ask Him to fill that spot with himself and you will see your life change form Grace to Grace and faith to faith until you reflect His Glory fully and you can say with Paul:

Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Here is something for you to consider:

    Genesis 18

And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? 14Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. 15Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

If GOD said move the mountain.. all he needs from us is Faith.. which is to believe that if He said it then It is possible by His power through us.

    Thank you for sharing gotime...

I know many will scorn and say the Messiah is their Imputed Righteousness and they Rest.. and while they in part are correct they believe not the power of GOD that works through us by Christ within us that overcame so we can overcome through Him..

GOD's Love and Grace is sufficient.. we grow therein and follow the Good Shepherd home..

Here is a couple of promises for those who think our thoughts can not be changed:

Pro 16:3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

    and here:

2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds
    2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Two wonderful promises that are yes and amen in Christ. But there is only one way to have it a reality in your life, You must have faith/Trust in God for it to happen.

Feel free to share any promises that you have found that have changed your life in real ways to the praise of Jesus Christ and our Father in heaven.

[for me anyway] of course not, seeing that sin begins within us with sinful thoughts coming forth from the heart: whether it be hate, or resentment, or an evil eye, pride, foolishness, or any number of other like things, nay we cannot stop sinful thoughts from cropping up. But what we can do is turn from putting our trust into the hands and power of sin, and turn to putting out trust into the hands and power of God: when we have this firm in our heart, then shall our conscience be especially sensitive whenever sin crops up upon us: and yes of course the Holy Spirit of Truth keeping our heart and mind through Christ Jesus. The Holy Ghost working with our conscience to even hating our garment spotted by the slightest touch of sin.
And they went out and preached that men should repent.
    (Mark 6:12)
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. (Luke 22:27)

The new covenant is a great promise, There are a number of different pictures God has used to give us hope.

The heart is our problem as is stated:

Jer_17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Paul said of the Carnal heart/mind:

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

    Jesus said:

Mar 7:20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
Mar 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mar 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mar 7:23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Out of the heart comes evil.

But now the promise which is yes and amen in Jesus are these:

For the carnal heart which can not keep the law of God, Jesus says:

Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

Praise God a heart and mind with Gods law written on it.

Here is another way God says this:

Eze 36:25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

A spiritual heart transplant, the old sinful hard heart taken out and a new soft flesh heart put in by our God. Not only that but His Spirit and the result, we will keep his laws and do them.

Praise God that is a wonderful promise. Cleansing and transformation and all I have to do is trust this promise is yes and amen in Christ Jesus and I will have it.

Glory to Heavenly Father and our Lord and Saviour.

Anther promise of God for a new heart is found in Duet as it is written:

Deu 30:6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

Of course this is the imagery of Abraham who circumcised his manhood as a sign to remind Him that it is not by mans power or effort but by Gods promise.

As Abraham tried to bring about the promise with Hagar and only brought fourth bondage. But God waited till he was of age and Sarah of age then brought the child of promise be divine power. SO it is that God promises to circumcise our hearts. and again our God says:

Deu 30:11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
Deu 30:12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
Deu 30:13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
Deu 30:14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

It is not hard because it is the work of God by faith in his promises.

    Just as Paul said:

Rom 10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above
Rom 10:7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
    Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

I love that, with the heart man "believeth" Trusts has faith unto what? Righteousness. Righteousness is the result of trust in Gods promise to circumcise our hearts.

You obviously mean well but you are misapplying the texts you are citing.

the answer to your question is yes; but not in this life.

Our old man will continuously war with our new man until we go to the Lord.

We will however become more and more able to resist sin as our walk with the Lord is strengthened.
    MarcR

    Blessings on you! (Nu 6:24-26)

    Col 3:16-17
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

    KJV

MarcR, you see it not that it is believing in GOD that counts?

If we are told to sin no more we are to believe and GOD does the rest.. as in we believe in Christ as our perfect and only sin offering acceptable to GOD so that through believing we receive the Holy Spirit through He that overcame so we can overcome and live and walk in the Spirit given by GOD's Grace and love toward us.

So when we read the Messiah teach us to be perfect and righteous we set our heart to believe Him.. it is the Faith of Abraham.. the Law of Faith.

The more I read statements above doubting... the more I see the power of GOD working through me to guide and comfort me in all Truth.

Nothing is impossible for GOD but you first must believe.

I am sure you mean well also, but is it not true that:

1Jn_4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

I say yes the promises of God in Christ Jesus are yes and amen here and now. I do not simply speak theoretically but share the very promises that have given me victory in Jesus.

1Jn 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
1Jn 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

Jesus death and resurrection is sufficient, The devil has no power over the children of God. I have seen it and bare witness to the promises of our God.

    Peter says:

    1Pe 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
1Pe 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

These are great promises that can only be fulfilled if one puts their complete trust in the word of God.

Jesus created the heavens and the earth with just his voice as it is written:

Gen 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Jesus spoke and demons obeyed, the wind and the waves obeyed the dead were raised. There is power in the word of God. Creative renewing power.

Are not these promises the very word of God? and what will they do to the one who has faith?

Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Isa 55:12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Isa 55:13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Then let us put away unbelief and trust fully in His word for by it we are washed as it is written:

    Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

I appreciate the care I know you intend, but I testify that the word of God is powerful and the promises of God are true to the word.

    1 Corinthians 15

50Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal mustput on immortality. 54So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Be steadfast.. unmoveable... always abounding in the work of the Lord because we know we Labour not in vain because He is our Victory and once again thanks be to GOD speaks volumes..

So let's talk about Abraham and how AFTER he was declared righteous for believing by the Lord.

He blatantly lied about Sarah not being his wife, SEVERAL times. He took it upon himself to "help" God by impregnating a slave girl.
In both instances it can be said he didn't fully trust God, and the UNCONDITIONAL promises that God gave to him.
Although there were grave consequences for his unbelief in those areas, God was, and is faithful to keep HIS promises regardless of Abraham's sin.

In both instances it can be said he didn't fully trust God, and the UNCONDITIONAL promises that God gave to him.
Although there were grave consequences for his unbelief in those areas, God aS faithful to keep HIS promises regardless of Abraham's sin.

You are not Abraham.. we are to have the Faith of Abraham through GOD's Son. Now all those things that came to pass are not for us to excuse our behaviour but came to pass in due seasons that GOD could justify us through Faith in His Son. Now the promise was to and had not yet come (The Messiah) to be the perfect offering giving us forgiveness and reconciliation and Victory through Christ..

Now we receive the Holy Spirit Baptism to allow us to inherit the Kingdom of GOD.

GOD is Faithful always my dear the question is are you Faithful.. do you believe?

We are more than overcomers in Christ. Our future position in Christ makes us sinless. Our present position confronts us with sin daily.

We are confronted by sin in this present reality to keep us on our knees and to make manifest to us our complete reliance upon Christ and His righteousness.

Are we talking about sins of commission only or commission and omission.

I think this side of eternity we will not live sinless.
However me acknowledging that does not mean I use it as an excuse to sin.
Pray God that I never fall foul of Romans 6.

However in Jesus we are called to live Holy and pure lives.
We have the Holy Spirit in us, he works in us to conform us to the image of Christ.
He is our helper, I am not saying we are passive here, we make choices based on what he has revealed to us.

As we grown in Christ and mature we will grow in Agape love for others and self control should increase.

As it does then our sins should decrease.

The promises of God to us are true, for he cannot lie.
If he promises to work in us he will do so. We yield to his promises so his will be done in us.

Jesus went back to the Father

    Romans 8:33-34 (NIV)
33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

    1 John 2:1-2 (NIV)

1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

We overcame sin in Christ the day we believed and trusted Jesus as our savior.....He is the payment for the sins of the whole world, sin is not the issue....faith is the issue.....and regardless......until the day one dies or receives a glorified body they are bound in a dead body of sin that is not subject unto the word of God.....John was clear and spoke in the present tense...

If we say that we have no sin we are deceived and the truth is not in us.

What is the victory that has overcome the world, EVEN our faith!
