one other bit of this chapter that has been neglected:

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
(Romans 8:8-9)​

what is my mind set on if i am focusing on the body - which is dead because of sin - and perfect obedience to the Law? can i please God if my mind is absorbed with a righteousness according to works?

i hope it's obvious from my conversation here over the years i've been a member that i'm not in any way advocating living in sin or trivializing righteous behavior.

but Romans 8:1 begins with "therefore . ."
therefore what is written next - that there is no more condemnation for those in Christ - is the conclusion that is reached by comprehending what has been explained immediately before & leading up to this statement.

bluntly: you don't get Romans 8 by skipping Romans 7.

so what is the argument that the Spirit writing through Paul makes, which brings us to the conclusion that in Christ there is no more condemnation?

but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

anyone who leaves this out perverts the gospel.

we are able to stand before Him not because of our own righteousness, which is worse than the foulest dirty towel you can imagine in God's sight.
we are able to stand before Him for one reason and one reason only: the mercy of God expressed in the blood of Jesus Christ which covers us!
